    Into the abyss…

Today is day 24 for me and I'm heading camping for five days with a great group of people. Unfortunately, the evening always end with drinks around the campfire and me drinking more than I can handle. The next morning begins with hiking and exploring AND a massive hangover. I never let on and trudge through the day but feel like crap.

I?m absolutely committed to staying AF and have a plan for the evening campfire routine but I was hoping to get some written support from all of you to take along to read later. I won?t have WIFI at the camp spot so I will be disconnected from all of you during this test. If I have something that I can read and hold on to while I?m there, it would really help. I?ll add your responses to my tool box.

    Thanks - Ginge
    :thanks:

Ginger999, I don't have anything for you to read but I want to wish you the very best. Sounds like you have a great plan. From your support to others here at MWO I know you will be able to do this.

    All my best,

Hi Ging - funny enough just posted this on anther thread : just set everyone straight BEFORE you go! think to the end - what will be the outcome if you have even that one drink

I asked before about Antebuse ? Give it a try again?
It REALLY helps. The relief it gave me going on holidays. No choices to make / set everyone straight from the off - I will not be drinking on this holiday

It did not stop them asking for the first 2 full days - "what are you having to drink"
      " want a cold beer " :egad:?
but they stopped then and automatically ordered a sparkling water with lime wedge & mint leaves in it. My version of a Mojito :H

I KNOW it is very difficult but I am SOOOOO glad I was able to say no. That of course is the 'brat' in me - always had to be different - but this time they were the ones who suffered while I was bright and breezy & very annoying I'm sure:H.

Write down how you feel today - I did that last time & dragged it out to read before I went.

What will alcohol add to your life in the current moment?

        What will it take away?

        How do you feel now?

And how will you feel tomorrow?

Enjoy the trip Ginge. I know for myself I always felt at home in the woods almost like there was something sacred and special. Couldn't even smoke while I was out camping or hiking because I didn't want to be the one to spoil it. Wouldn't want to miss all that beauty so maybe just take a deeper look around you, bring a camera. Even on a trail you've climbed a thousand times before there is always something new which, of course, is why we go.

Stay strong, stay sober and enjoy every minute.

            Hi Ginger,
Are you going to take any AF drinks with you? Take something that's enjoyable for you to drink. Even AF beer - there are lots of choices of those nowadays, as long as one doesn't lead you to wanting a real beer. I feel as though when I drink one, it satisfies me, as i like the taste of beer, and that's it.

Do you have an iphone? If you do, can you check in a minute here or there?

I like Londoner's questions. Some affirmations to add...

            1. I will wake up with a clear head, with an appreciation of the sites and sounds around me.
            2. I will hike and enjoy it, as I won't have a pounding headache and a dehydrated body.
            3. I'll enjoy the others I'm with, conversation, laughing, joking around. I will be "all" there in conversations and not worried about drink.
            4. I will feel well-rested after a good night's sleep. Two hours of sleep without Alcohol is better than 10 with alcohol.
            5. I will enjoy the campfire and hopefully some s'mores.

Hope this helps! STAY IN THE MOMENT! Breath the clear air. Enjoy good friends. Alcohol is not the reason for going camping. It's to enjoy nature, friends, and rest.

Ginger I had a sober weekend away with a massive group a couple of years ago; I had a ball - joined them while they drank and went to bed when I wanted to. In the morning I was up early swimming or walking. This was the most relaxing break I ever had.
The icing in the cake, what made me happy to be sober, was in the mornings when everyone else emerged, tired, rough looking, saying 'never again'. They were hardly fit to travel home..... I just thought 'thank God that isn't me'.
Really enjoy every moment of your trip - you will only miss those special moments if alcohol interferes and I know you won't let that happen.......
IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO BE WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN
Relapse starts long before the drink is drunk!!.Fresh Start!

Thank you everyone for your support. I do have a smart phone but we barely get cell service where we are headed and no 3g at all. However, if I have to travel to town, I'll check in for support. I'm printing these now so I can take along with me. Something to hold on to!

I have a cooler full of sparkling water, etc and lemons and lime for a little splash. I haven't tried non-al beer yet. I'm not sure I trust myself.

All this will really help me! I'm feeling strong. Thank you for being there for me!

                  Hi, Ginger:

I agree - bring your own drinks! Even bring a food treat that you can snack on by the fire - some s'mores? A bag of sweet apples? Some chips? Something that will keep your mouth and hands occupied. Also, I think you could say you're not drinking - either directly or make up something (medicine, for example) so that people stop offering a drink to you.

Dream of the delicious, non hungover morning cup of coffee, and the saved trips to the bathroom from the tent.

And what everyone else said, too.

We have been talking about sober vacations down on the Ladies on Mission thread (in monthly abstinence). Anyone's welcome to join...

I DID IT!!! I made it through the camping trip AF and today is 29 days. Whoot whoot. Every time I felt the least bit tempted, I thought of all of my AF peeps on MWO and I got through it. I was the only sober person around the fire at night. Hubby only had a couple each night and was ready to hit the hay when I was. Feeling very thankful today. Thanks everyone!

Ginger this thread put a big smile on my face! Congratulations on your success. Camping was always a big drunk fest for me too. You really have something to be proud of. It just isn't worth it.

Thanks Pinecone! It felt so good to get home last night having been successful at staying AF. One of the other ladies that went, hiked one day with a smashing headache and I was so glad it wasn't me. Thirty one days ago it would have been!
