    Sugar headaches....

I used to deliberately not eat for several hours before I drank - increased the reward. It was really stupid and probably contributed to screwing up my blood sugar.

Now that my blood sugar is stable, I'm never hypoglycemic, don't crave food or overeat, and find that my body seems to know when to eat and how much. To be liberated from cravings, feeling awful after overeating, and constantly thinking about when I can eat and how much is second only to being freed from alcohol. People talk about how dealing with food issues is harder than dealing with drinking because we can't quit eating. That is true but we can eat in a way that eliminates the problems that are so reminiscent of those caused by alcohol.

    All the best, NS

      Sugar headaches....

I really appreciate you bringing this up NS.
I have had a problem with my pancreas years ago... I believe it was producing too much insulin... I had been living in Italy and was treated there, so I cannot confirm the details.
I also have a history of not eating regularly enough and these days ... if I do not eat at least 3 meals on a regular schedule I get crazy. My hd makes fun of me... 'oh lordie... it's almost feeding time for little Ms. Can't Miss A Meal.' All in good humor. And I can laugh about it now, but BeLieVe me it is no laughing matter if we are on the road and there are no snackies available.

I turn into a little lunatic, if you want to know the truth.

hey.... regarding this: That is true but we can eat in a way that eliminates the problems that are so reminiscent of those caused by alcohol.

do you have a website you used in the beginning to get you on the right track?
I think I need to find the right track pretty quick....

          Sugar headaches....

Eloise, there are so many websites out there on the topic, it would be hard to recommend one.

For many people, just cutting out the obviously sweet foods is sufficient. Others need to eliminate all added sugars that are present even in things that don't taste sweet. Still others also need to reduce intake of the foods that rapidly are converted to sugar in our bodies.

There are "I quit sugar" programs available, low-carb websites, etc.

This thread contains a great deal of information: https://www.mywayout.org/community/f9...who-70446.html.

              Sugar headaches....

              Eloise,
Yes, they prescribe Topamax for migraines. It does not stop them but it does decrease the frequency and the duration of them. I will have them for days. I started to get them badly after a few weeks off of Topamax. I started again yesterday on 25mg, this weekend I will increase to my normal dose of 50mg. I've never really been a sugar eater so I'm sorry I can't help you in that aspect. I hope it gets better for you.

                Sugar headaches....

Not eating so much sugar has really helped me feel better. I didn't get bad headaches, but boy my back hurt, I think it was my kidney not handling the sugar. Sugar is inflammatory. I did not realize how bad it was until I cut it from my diet.
No matter how far you go or how fast you run, you can't get away from yourself. ....said at an AA meeting. It stuck with me.

                  Sugar headaches....

You know, LB, I had kind of forgotten about this because it wasn't my major complaint but the arthritis I had in a couple joints sure decreased when I got off sugar (and flares up on the occasions I indulge).

                    Sugar headaches....

Eloise, Your story sounds just like mine. Those first few weeks of headaches where almost enough to make me throw in the towel with quiting. I hung in there and now at 51 days I'm back to no headaches. HOWEVER...... I'm eating sugar like a 6 year old in a candy store. Like you, I didn't eat sugar other than what I got in AL. Now I'm craving it like a crazy person. I've got to get a handle on it though because it goes against every dietary rule I believe in! Keep us posted on the headaches. Good luck!

                      Sugar headaches....

Well, its morning here. Headache is better than last night, but still there. Today can be s quiet one if I choose.
Am a bit confused as if sugar settles the headache how does eliminating it solve the problem?
I think my problem is a combination of a few things: diet, sugar, stress, an old injury to my neck & hormones.
I didnt do well re: no sugar yesterday but it is a new day. I feel kind of terrible to be honest.
I had two biopsies yesterday for sun spots. I think I got myself in a bit of a twist about it? I didnt think I was stressed about it, but seeing new doctors always winds me up.
Ah... New day. Will do some reading about the sugar later. I appreciate everyones input & am getting excited about my upcoming 40th day of no vino. that is something to smile about.

                        Sugar headaches....

Eloise, That is a great number of days! Good for you. In the beginning I just felt like crap all over. Then I got this whooshing ear thing at week two no AF that went on and on for days. UGH! Things are finally starting to settle in now. Take it easy today if you can. Give yourself some time to heal, if possible. I read some place that AL and sugar both mess with the dopamine in your brain. When you stop it your brain has to learn to make it again without AL and sugar. Not sure about the truth in that though. NS could tell us, if she checks in. Good luck with the biopsies. Sending you good energy!!

It is a cycle, just like with AL. Drinking makes you feel awful the next day and you often don't feel better until you start drinking again. As Ginger said, it involves neurotransmitters and brain chemistry. Remove the substance, adjust to its absence, and the cycle stops.

No Sugar, do you know of any information on the effects on brain chemistry after going AF. I'm curious as to what to expect now that I am coming close to 30 days and I am wondering if it affects our hormones.

                              Sugar headaches....

                              Hi, Cherokeer

There is a great deal of information about alcohol's effects on the brain but I don't think I've seen much related to hormones per se, other than stress hormones. It affects every system in the body, however, so it seems reasonable that there could be some changes.

Congratulations on reaching your 30 days but please give your brain more time to heal fully. It takes quite awhile to get everything back on track but it's worth it!

                                Sugar headaches....

Hey Ginger, Cherokeer & NS- yesterday I took it easy... 2 naps!
Felt really dizzy, a little headache... just overall not well enough to even consider driving the car.
I ate no processed sugars... I did eat a lot of fruit and went to the gym.
This morning a little headache stated again... this time right side of the head... feeling okay now.

I have had that back pain too on and off for a long time. NS you are giving me hope that maybe my knee will stop hurting one day? That would be cool. Its funny because I just thought hey... stop drinking and voila you will feel great. Takes a while to get back on track. Humans should really be warned how much drinking does indeed harm our bodies.

Today will be an art day. Going to focus on a painting that has been sitting on the easel too long waiting to be finished. I am going to continue to take those valerian tablets.
Thanks for everyone's input, I do find it very valuable.
I really do not have anyone to compare notes with over here.
