    Been here before.

Hello all. I was here briefly before.
I have a serious question to ask. Has anyone here ever had seizures before when quitting cold turkey?
I am drinking a lot. About a half a gallon every two days of vodka. I am concerned about going cold turkey but also wonder if I am using it as a excuse.

I don't think it is an excuse. Before I quit completely (3 days ago) I cut back little by little for nearly 2 weeks. You might try that - maybe not as long as me, but for a week or so.

    You can do it!

      Hi adrunk and welcome back...

I understand your question. Been there myself. And it isn't a great place to be - at least from the physical side of things. On the other hand, you've reached a very good place as it sure sounds like you are really ready and willing to break free of this insidious addiction.

Do you have access to medical care? Only a doctor can make an educated assessment about the best way to help you through withdrawal. That being said, there is a lot of info out on the internet for DIY detox/withdrawal.

I remember you, adrunk - I'm so glad you're back and wanting to quit.

The smart thing that I *should* have done would have been to check with a doctor. I'm 100% sure I would have been less scared about withdrawals, it would have been safer, and I would have had the kind of advice that no one can really give on a forum.

Having said that, hoo-boy I was drinking plenty, and I did quit over a few days-a week by tapering. It was hard in that it would have been easy for me to string it out longer than I needed to OR would have been easy for me to get partway through and then just give up or try moderating instead. I remember when I was talking in the Nest about my taper plan and at some point Byrd asked if I really NEEDED that "one last drink" (or whatever my plan was) or if I thought I could just stop at the point I was at. It was a tough call and part of me wanted sooooo badly to at least have that last one, but in the end it was the nudge I needed.

That's just my story though, and the important part of it is even though it worked for me; I look back and really wish I'd just seen a doctor. However you decide to quit, I'm glad you've decided!

Good Morning to you all. Thank you for the advise. I am concerned about the with drawl process.
I do have access to a doctor and I do think I should get his take on this.

Thank you all for the advise and kind words. I need to quit or drink is going to kill me.

          I will be back.

          adrunk.

We're pulling for you...adrunk (BTW...I would REALLY like to add a prefix to your name - Nomo? Notta? ) I know your choice reflects how you feel right now - but that is changing!

Glad to hear you can work with a doctor...withdrawal is a part of the process of healing...and you will get through it.

I had dts last year as I was quitting. I had severe shakes and auditory and visual hallucinations. I ended up getting benzos that quietened the singing voice in my head. My advice to you is get medical detox or atleast go get some benzos. Beer is easier to go cold turkey on, not so with liqour. I did have have some mild seizures but nothing serious like a grand mal.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. How are things going for you? When it comes to vodka, I have to advise that you reach out for medical help. I was a major wino, but was able to detox safely at home. However, my brother was a big liquor drinker - more than you are currently drinking, so take that into account. My advice is based on his level of drinking which was through the roof. Anyway, I know that the conventional wisdom out there is that all AL is the same, but I'm not so sure. Even at my worst, liquor could level me. This may be controversial but it was my experience.

I watched my brother have seizures when he quit drinking the first time. He needed to be hospitalized. I'm not saying this to scare you. Just to warn you that withdrawal is nothing to mess around with. Please come back and give us an update. We'll stand by you every step of the way - whichever way you choose to proceed. Take good care of yourself.
Everything is going to be amazing
