Tappering

Hi. Tapering not Tappering
I arrived here when I googled about tapering off alcohol and a post from 2014 came up.
The poster drank a bottle to a bottle and a half a night. She was wondering how to taper off and was encouraged to go cold turkey.
I am in the same boat but can drink a lot more than that once or twice a week. The main alcohol is red wine, sometimes Gin...beer.
I read horror stories about death from going cold turkey.
I've actually went cold turkey twice and it was ok but then I read that the more you cold turkey the more problems, withdraws and chances of death.
I would LOVE to go cold turkey and tapering is difficult because you get sucked right back in.
I was taking Neurotin but I had terrible side effects. The first side effect put me in the hospital over night.
It is a very difficult situation here as my husband can enjoy a few glasses a night (tops) with a cigar. He built himself a cigar room just for this purpose.
He hates how much I drink but it makes it difficult. I can't see him ever being social and not having alcohol present. It's not fair for me to ask him to quite so I can but I swear I wake up in the mornings and think I just need to move out. But we have two young children 11 and 14 (married 21 years).
HELP

Hi, CER
You're right that tapering is tough! Even a little bit keeps the beast alive.
Many people here drank at least a bottle of wine a night and quit cold turkey without incident.
It feels awful but isn't life-threatening.
But, since everyone is different, could you have someone with you who will know to get you help if you have serious problems?

You might want to jump into the Newbies Nest with this and any other questions you might have.

:welcome:! NS

Ok thanks. I will do that.
There are lots of times that it is more than a bottle of wine. I'm scared.
Ill take my post to newbies. Sorry

Don't be sorry - it is fine to post here! It is just that not everyone sees these threads and you're more likely to get some help in the more active threads. There are no RULES .

Should I delete it here then?

No, some people who don't hang out in the Newbies Nest might see it and you'll get even more input!

I know of one woman, available, who was drinking about 2 bottles of wine a night and quit cold turkey.
I think the main thing is to have a support person in case you need medical attention.

I don't get it. I don't see Newbies Nest in the forum selections and when I follow your link I don't see how I can start a new topic. sigh....always a road block.

This link should take you to the last post: https://www.mywayout.org/community/j...ml#post1735141
If not, just go to the last page and there will be a window for your post.

Then, read back a few pages and you'll get a feel for the discussions and people going on there recently.

I know this feels really overwhelming right now but as soon as you can get a few days without a drug in your system, it will become much easier.

I'll be looking for your post in the Nest

YES YES...everything feels overwhelming! Nail on the head. Is that from the alcohol? I'm not sure what to blame that on anymore....menopause, depression, alcohol. omg

Hi Cer,
I tried to taper and well I just end up drunk again...it’s like Groundhog Day. It can be dangerous to go cold turkey but the main thing is to have someone around if it gets bad. Either way you are still going to get sick and feel like a bag of sh#t for a few days. Just make sure you stay hydrated with electrolyte drinks and water. ( maybe a few Tylenol) No Sugar is very wise, you should join in on the conversations in the newbie nest as there is a lot of support to help you with a plan to be successful. I have had multiple relapses and they always welcome me back and each time I learn more about myself and am able to come back quicker and stronger.

Can't be much worse than the constant hangovers and beating yourself up. Thank You for your reply.

Re: Tappering

Nothing is as bad as the feelings of hopelessness and self-hatred that come from drinking yet again when you promised yourself (for what seems like the millionth time!) that you won't.

And the thing is - it passes! Some people can't sleep well for awhile. Others (like me) slept all of the time. There are things you can do to help you feel better - eat well (good food and enough of it - many of us got out of the habit of actually eating...), stay hydrated, consider nutritional supplements, rest, nurture yourself, read and post here (and realize you're not alone. Most of us felt like weak, moral FAILURES).

The forum isn't too busy right now. Are you in the US? If so, it gets busier in the late afternoon. I'm currently avoiding my job so am here .

But anyway, just pick a page in the past in the Nest and start reading. The characters change but the stories and suggested solutions pretty much stay the same.

Take care of yourself and try not to be afraid. It isn't nearly as hard as you think it will be, it is very unlikely that if you are otherwise healthy that cold turkey will be harmful, and the rewards are even greater than you can imagine.

xx, NS

I hope I have found a home here. I hope I can come here and use this crutch. I hope I can be sober. I hope I don't die if I quite cold turkey. I hope my life, who I am and who I was start coming back piece by piece. I hope being sober makes things better not worse in my marriage. I hope

Its hard to confirm. To error on the side of caution I'd say two bottles of one 3x a week. The rest of the week one????
