It's been a while since I posted last, but I feel like I have finally found some answers that are really helping me, and figured that I should share them with you all in hopes that they can help others who are struggling.
I have been on the drug Naltrexone for a couple months now. I am taking also the MWO recommended supplements. I also read the book, and listen to the Hypno CD's from time to time (though not nearly as often as I should).
I asked both my MD and my psychologist about Topa. They both recommended Naltrexone instead, but they were open to Topa as a plan B. But, they'd both seen first-hand results with Naltrexone in patients (in fact, my psychologist was involved in a big clinical study, in which Campral was also tested. Naltrexone came out as the most helpful, statistically, in that particular study).
So, I agreed to give Naltrexone a shot, and if that didn't help, we'd consider Topamax.
I am now about 2 months in. I have to tell you all- I am feeling like a different person. I still have drinking nights from time to time- but, when I do drink, I don't really like the taste much anymore, in fact if I drink more than a couple I get a little nauseous and sort of naturally reject more drinks. Sometimes, if I want the buzz, I convince myself to 'power through' the effects, so as to eventually get buzzed/drunk, but it's an effort.
So naturally, since the taste and effects are much diminished now, getting drunk doesn't have the pull and power that it used to.
Also, there are increasingly more and more days/nights where craving is almost non-existent. It just doesn't have any 'juice' for me anymore.
I've noticed that I am now rejecting my beers once they're a few sips or half empty, instead of devouring one after the next. That's certainly new!
There are no side-effects that I have noticed, except maybe a little heartburn- I'm not sure if it's one of the supps or the med itself, but it's manageable. I take an alka seltzer about once a day, in teh evenings, if the heartburn rears up.
Keep in mind, I haven't yet gotten 30 days sober- so far, I still lapse about once every two weeks. but the lapse feels different now, as I described above. And I am just less and less inclined to lapse, and to way overdo it when I do lapse.
I really feel that I may have found the answer, for me. I don't want to diminish Topa, since I know many of you are on it- again, I haven't tried it yet. But it seems that with Naltrexone I am getting results.
Hopefully my findings may help some of you!
