Campral for 30 days sobriety then Topamax!

    Hi,

I am new here. I think I have figured out that Topamax is for moderation and Campral for abstinence. Is this correct? I have a problem with binge drinking on the weekends. I hear you need to stay sober for 30 days before you start the program...? True? If that is the case I am going to use Campral for the 30 day sobriety and then Topamax for moderation. Any advice?? Also, the vitamins. Does anyone feel better with the vitamins? L-GLut, primrose oil, kudzu etc. If anybody can give me advice - I sure would appreciate it.

    Best regards,

    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Have you read the book yet? It is helpful in outlining everything. You do not HAVE to abstain 30 days before starting the program; it is just something that is recommended. I take the supps and listen to the CDs and they really help (when I am consistent with taking them and listening to the CDs). I am big fan of the l-glutamine/Kudzu combination for helping with cravings as well. Good luck to you!!!

        More2,

Thanks! I am going to the Dr. today! So we will see. I am trying to moderate for now. So I figured Topamax would be better in the grand scheme of things. I am taking Campral and feel funny the first day but feel great now. Not sure if abs is for me but who knows???

        Thanks,
        Mark

Welcome Tugboat. What a beautiful avatar you have.

I take the Kudzu - 1200 mg every day for me - and the L-glutamine - 2,000 mg every day. but different people use different doses. You have to find out what works best for you. They most definitely work. Once I ran out of kudzu and it took me a few weeks to get more, and it was torture - the cravings came back in full force. When I started the Kudzu again, things got much much better.

I am doing abs and just started taking topa - I'm only on 25 mg per day right now. You can take topa just fine if you are doing abs - you just need to take lower doses of it (usually) than if you are doing mods. I hope I don't have to go higher than 50 mg per day. I don't want the side effects.

I'll let you know how it goes.

          Welcome aboard!!!! :welcome:
Rest in Peace, Bear. We miss you.

            Hi there Tugboat,

It's not as easy as that. For Campral, you've got to be abstinent in order for it to work and to keep abstinent. Campral has no adverse side effects, well, no adverse ones. Topa reduces cravings to 0, if you can take the side effects, which some people can and some can't. Depending on the dosage. My alcohol off switch is reached for instance at around 175 mgs to 200 mgs. I can be total abstinent at that dosage with no cravings for alcohol. In fact from then onwards, I could maybe switch to Campral, I have never tried that avenue.

I did however try campral by itself, and it threw my intestinal system upside down ... And I started drinking on it again, which sort of threw me back to square one again. This has not happened on Topa. Only that I titrated down on Topa, and I started drinking: So I upped my dose again.

            Hope that helps.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I tried topa and it worked, but the side effects on my eyes were bad (I did drink heavy once on it and this is when the eye pressure started.). I switched to campral. The campral worked to a degree, but yes you do need to be AF. Campral took the physical cravings away, but zero on the mental side. Topa worked on both sides. Anyway, I'm drinking on the campral and want to switch back to topa. My question would be, how long should you wait before switching. I think stopping one and then start one too fast could be dangerous. I agree with Paddy, I think topa first then maybe campral later once the mental part is fixeded. IMO

I just bumped up my dose to 150 and my last drink was a few weeks ago as a "what the hell" sort of thing. I'm thinking I may not do that for quite some time as I really got no pleasure out of and it interacted badly with my other meds. Not to mention it was expensive. I'm only concerned that I may binge at my Xmas party but that's several months off. However, even though the memory, word loss and loss of typing ability is driving me a bit crazy it seems to be working a lot better than the Campral. The Campral was difficult to remember to take three times a day and then I thought too much about drinking as well. The Topa has me saying "naaah" more often than not. Got a lot of the weight loss - too much, as a matter of fact.
