    effexor?

    no need for a fight!

I think that it's really good to be aware of stories from individuals but not to base a decision on them. Also, there is a placebo effect here too and it's unclear how that affects whether you improve or get worse on a medication. That's another reason individual stories can't be taken as fact or generally applicable.

I read the stories about topa side effects and got turned off, but those are well documented in trials.

the last time this came up on the threads (antidepressants causing drinking problems) determinator wrote that celexa is actually being investigated as a drug to aid drinking problems. so it does seem like there is a lot of conflicting advice out there.

I went off celexa because of anecdotal reports about weight gain. I had gained weight but am not sure if it was drug-related or related to overeating! I couldn't find much documentation on this, just kind of speculation about why some people might gain weight. since then, i lost the weight but i also cut my portion sizes in half.

anyway, it's best to do without meds if possible, i think. before taking any anti-depressant medication, i think it's wise to look at your diet as some of you all have done, eliminate foods that cause mood swings, take supplements (im taking inositol and fish oil, vitamin b complex), reduce alcohol, which depletes serotonin. reduce refined sugar. get exercise. take it easy on the negative self-talk. all those measures help with depression. those are natural measures. they work for me. i have been off them for two months. i feel more stable than i have in a long time.

One more thing, I agree that it is wise to consider side effects for all the various drugs and half-life, withdrawal issues, and make a decision on the most harmless medication.

I completely agree! When I stopped the meds (cold turkey) - I started doing some serious research on supplements and vitamins for anxiety and depression. I was already on Atkins, so no sugar; well, nothing "white" - no processed grains, no sugar, etc. But I remembered a section in one of the Atkins books on supps and anxiety/depression, so I went from there. I started the l-glute immediately, and then added things as I researched further (mostly on the web). Now I take about 18 pills every morning as well as 3 hefty spoonfulls of the l-glute.

The more research I've done, the more I've become convinced that a lot of these problems (including addictive behaviors) have to do with the body's sugar metabolism and it's effect on brain chemistry. Since I became very strict about not eating all the refined sugars and starches and taking the supps I have felt mentally better than I have in years, maybe ever.

And just a weird little related aside - I saw a "Lifetime" movie (I know, I know) about a little boy with terrible epilepsy. Drugs didn't help and he was having hundreds of seizures a day. Then they found a doctor who had a "special diet" that was helping kids like this. Long story short, as I was watching it I thought "Wow, that sounds a lot like Atkins induction phase". So I did a little research and sure enough it's called the "ketogenic diet" and it was developed at John's Hopkins years ago. It actually cures epilepsy in something like 30% of those kids who go on it for an extended length of time.

Oh to be a research scientist! This is the avenue I would pursue; that is, if I could get funding! Don't think I could find a pharmaceutical co. to fund a study on diet and mental illness!

        effexor?

you won't believe it, but somehow I missed a dose yesterday and by lunchtime today I was sick as a dog. took a dose and 1/2 later I'm right as rain. It really does leave your system quickly! Awful stuff. I have to talk to my Dr about getting off it.
It always seems impossible until it's done....

Hi Flip, It probably would be a good idea to try to talk to your doctor about it. Effexor is not a good one either if you don't take it the exact same time every day. The way I am getting off it is gradually tapering, as I told you and my dose is at 7 a.m. and some mornings my body is really wanting 7 a.m. to get there!

I want to add that the anxiety is so horrible still! Sleep is 4-6 hours a night. I know this is just my body getting rid of the drug so i can put up with this. And all the supplements I have been trying EVERYTHING i can for anxiety/sleep...not so much depression anymore.

I think Nancy and She were on about the nutrition. With me it all started with the MWO starter pack...Allone and supps and my whole state of mind changed for the better. The awareness of what i was doing to my body, and putting into it. For the first time I cared! Limiting the alchohol became easier and depression lifted.

Now, get me off of the effexor!

          Cap

          p.s. Flip, i think i unblocked myself.
