Finally Started Taking Topa
I've been having a battle with myself over taking Topa for several months. A large part of it stems from the fact that my sister is an epileptic, and if she misses even one dose of her medicine she will have a seizure. Topamax is used to treat seizures. She doesn't take Topa, but considering how prone she is to have seizures if her levels get to low--especially if she misses a dose of her medicine... I get alittle scared about putting a anti-seizure medicine in my body (considering how dependent she is on it). I finally decided after researching and reading about everyone's experience here to give it a try. I ordered it from River Pharmacy. I took 25mg last night and tonight. No reduced urge to drink, but I definitely feel like I am doing something positive. I hope that when I get up to 75 or 100mg I will have a very noticable affect. I have to do something...and hopefully it will involve NOT drinking 5 out of 7 days of the week. We'll see.

Finally Started Taking Topa
Good luck Julie, It sure seems to have worked for me. I know it's not the magic pill, but combined with the supps it has made it much easier for me. I am at 100 mg and am in my 4th week. I had some cravings yesterday, but I think it was mental being Friday night and all. I was a 6 day a week drinker and put down 10 plus beers a night. I have had 25 AF days since I started Topa and the rest moderate. Hope it works for you too.

Finally Started Taking Topa
hi all I'm just about to start it again, when it arrives...
it was a life saver for me. wasn't sure if it was working, but then when I eventually titrated up to 150mg - BANG! Could sit in a restaurant with mates glugging back booze and JUST NOT WANT ANY. If I had one, my glass of wine would last a whole evening (I am a 2 bottle a day girl).
I came off it at the same time as getting divorced. how stupid was that. So now back here and determined. Anyway, my point is that most successful topa-users find that there is an amount that when reached has the effect of a switch being thrown in your head. stay with it and keep going up and till you get there. It is amazing.
(also really recommend adrafinil from nubrain.com to counteract the fog when titrating up).

Finally Started Taking Topa
My only side effect is the incredible tingling in my feet. None in my hands so far. I hear it goes away with time so that will be nice. I will go up to 150 mg today. 100 worked for a while but yesterday I for some odd reason thought I needed 2 glasses of wine. Really want to get to the point where my brain feels like it needs none.
Overall, my consumption is 1/8 or less what it was before topa but I was hoping I would be completely AF. The battle is really one day at a time, before the war is won. I guess in my warped mind I thought it would be different and much easier. Aloha everyone. WW

I was doing fine until I went to 150 mg. Then it seems like I went into a vegetable state. I was okay for the first couple of days until it kicked in and then it just seemed my brain wasn't working right. Actually it scared me. Am back to 100 now and may go back to 75. The beautiful thing though is that I have no desire to drink more than 2 beers. This stuff really works!

Rob,
That's great news about your desire to drink less. I'm on my second day of 50 mg of Topamax (start of week 2). Normally, I practically guzzle my first two glasses of wine. Tonight I've nursed two glasses of wine over the course of four hours. I'll probably still finish a bottle of wine, but it will be over the course of several hours instead of in two and a half hours. That gives me encouragement that as my dose increases the cravings will lessen even more. However, I definitely don't want to get brain fog, and in my job I defiinitely cannot afford to so I will keep a watch out for that side affect. Thanks for the update on how its working for you. Good luck.
Julie
