I never knew that chantix helped with Alc. I definitely can't drink w/out smoking and I do it like a fiend when I am. On a typical day I may only smoke 2-3 cigs and then only in the eve. because my hubby smokes and it's like a bonding session for us.When I stop altogether I hate the smell and can't even stand my huby being NEAR me w/ that smell. For me the reason to quit both is mostly vanity. I have noticed my skin looking bad...large pores wrinkles, broken blood vessels...and the weight alc puts on me is just NOT my cup of tea. I've even started noticing OTHERS w/ the same look, and wonder do they look at me and think "Aha I know what HER vices are.." I have some chantix on hand and think I will try some tomorrow AM, though I'm very sensitive to pills and have suffered from depression. I also know alcohol is a depressant yet that hasn't deterred me so far... lesser of two evils, I guess. I am very new to this site and in fact joined 3 months ago, went on for 2 days and then when I started to drink again, I stopped coming here. I ordered the book but never read it... I have deep issues with follow through...Here's me wishing me good luck cause I know this thread is old and no one will probably read it anyway...

Hi jeanie. I am aware of a study currently underway testing chantix's ability to curb alcohol intake and I have heard anecdotal evidence that it does.
But what we are finding here is that there are 2 medications that are truly miracle drugs for alcoholism. Naltrexone and Baclofen.
Read the "Strictly Sinclair" thread to read about naltrexone being used in a very specific way that is contrary to it's established use to actually bring about a CURE for alcoholism that has been scientifically proven to be successful in 80% of patients.
Read the "Consolidated Baclofen" threads and you'll find that most people around here using baclofen in a specific way have been able to stop drinking completely and effortlessly.:nutso: I take pride in my humility :nutso:

Why don't I want a drink?
I have a perfectly good bottle of Jack Daniel's on the counter and for some reason I can't hear it calling me. I thought I must be sick, somethings wrong. I have the house to myself and normally that bottle would be well dipped into by now and I'd be smoking a cigarette. The thought of the cigarette is disgusting to me too. Then I remembered I'm on day 2 of my Chantix. I wondered why I didn't want a drink either so I Googled "Chantix & Alcohol" and wound up here. It's amazing that I don't want a drink. I'm used to at least a couple of drinks a night (and sometimes during the day). I've read a lot of other members saying the same thing. This is so great! I'm always trying to quit drinking. I of course don't want to be on Chantix forever but not drinking for a while or least drinking like a normal person could break the routine I'm in. THAT could last forever.
I am however, deathly afraid of the dreams. This isn't my 1st go round with Chantix (my alcohol appetite was not so much an issue then). I stopped because of this side effect. I had such vivid, disturbing dreams that I was afraid to go to sleep. This time I'm not taking the night time pill. Honestly I'd rather smoke and drink than have more bad dreams.

Chantix
I have been using Chantix for about two weeks now. Although I initially took it for smoking, I have found that the craving for my other vice, alcohol indulgence, has been reduced significantly. Kind of of tired, but the side effects are much more preferable to hangovers and a clouded head. Also, for teh first time in years, I only smoked a half pack of cigs in a day. Goal is to quit completely.

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"
