    drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

    drinking on Nal

I have been on Naltrexone since Oct 6th and I am frustrated that it is not doing enough. It is expensive and I am wondering why I am not getting the results I think I would happen. I am using it the way the Sinclair method recomends and It is driving me crazy. Any suggestions. Just want to get on with my life. P

Kimmy, what do you mean you are not getting the "buzz" from the alcohol? do you mean a good feeling?

Here in Florida they have 2 (i think, maybe more?) out patient Sinclair Clinics. One in Sarasota and one in Miami.I heard the cost is $3500.. per year and includes all meds. and counseling. My great Uncle did it last year and He is doing GREAT.They offer a $250.. package to give to your own Dr. that is a treatment plan for him to follow. It sounds Cheap to me since there is no DETOX involved.
I got Naltrexone and campral from Riverpharmacy and in combination work wonders for me. The 3 slips that I have had were STOPPED in days with a daily doses of them both. My cravings were gone in a day or two and no hangover at all.
I don't take either now, unless i am in a Stressed mood. Then Antabuse will make sure that I can't drink.
They have some great Utubes about Sinclair method and the research that is being done...
There is no Magic pill but they are always in my sobriety TOOL BOX.

Potato- could you be a little more specific? I am not sure what you mean by not getting the results you expected- please tell us more and maybe we can give you some input.

Me, the naltrexone blocks the 'feel good' receptors in our brains. So although you can take a drink, the buzz (warm feeling, feel like being friendly to everyone) is not there.

Therefore many people are able to 'cure' (sorry can't think of a better word) their drinking by carrying on as usual, but it not being pleasurable anymore. Gradually the habit just drops away. It didn't work for me because I did not have the back up of of a doctor, and I was worried about side effects- but Kimmy123 offers good advice there a few posts back.

              Kimmy,

I am doing the "Sinclair" method, myself. I am taking 100mg of Naltrexone a day. 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg mid afternoon. I also am taking Campral.

So far, the results have been fantastic. I can't describe the difference.

My doctor wanted to give me the Vivitrol injection but the cost was prohibitive, whereas the tabs are doable.

Please let me know how you are doing.

              Benedikt? You?

              Love,
              Cindi

I agree with Cinders, Sinclair method has been great, but I used it to break the cycle of wanting to drink and i don't stay on it daily or even want to drink, at this point in my life.It is such a relief to say those words and have them be TRUE.

Thank you, Evie.Lou. I needed to hear that. :l:l

I simply cannot wait until I get through those cycles of wanting to drink and where you are.

                      drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

I just wanted to add...I think that for me Naltrexone does not kill the initial desire for a drink. But once i have a glass of wine and don't get the elusive "buzz" it kills the desire to have another one. I beleive it is the Buzz which prompts us to feel Good or High, and hence have another to enhance that feeling. Even if it means getting in your car to buy more, With the Naltrxone I am not prompted to have another. I am ok and I just don't care for another...Beleive me when I say this in itself is a breakthrough. I have never been able to stop at just one.

So Anyways...I hope this helps you R2C.

                      Regards,
                      A

I am glad you are getting some results Amethyst- I also found it didn't taste very nice- therefore bearing in mind you don't get a buzz, and the taste was a bit foul, I was finding by number 3 I couldn't even finish it- indeed if I bothered to order number 3.

                          Hi, Guys.

I have to say that for I have been taking it since Thursday. (12/10/2008) and I find the results amazing.

I do believe this is going to work.

I believe it is going to work!!

                          Love,
                          Cindi

I hope it doesn't kill my poor liver in the meantime but the drinking will anyways.

I am thinking the way to go with nal is 50mg a day, every day, forever...just like your vitamins or asprin. I "think" 25mg would do the trick on matinance, have to see if that is true. There is a couple of online pharmas that have nal for about 2 bucks a pill, not much when you consider the ultmiate savings. I know some will say your just trading one drug for another, so what, this med allows me to funciton like a normal person, so in manner its no different than insulin or a inhaler.

                              update...i think it is working

I think this is like day 4 for me not sure....I remember feeling like shit the 1st day on 50mg(lethargic, irritable etc ..).but now i have gone down to 25mg and feel much better. I still crave 1 glass of wine or 2 but i stop always after # 2. I don't know if this is normal but it is much better than before. Maybe i will add campral and see if it helps before going back to 50mg.
I took campral alone, for months and still, drank, got drunk got annoying, got mad at myself the next day and felt hungover ,depressed, and like a loser. Now with the Naltrexone... This is amazing. Tonight I went to a restaurant., Had 2 glasses of wine. Did not care for more. No buzz, just kind of a tired, sleepy feeling.
I told my 13 year old daughter i was taking it and explained the way it works to her. Her words were "That's good because I could always tell when u were drunk mom. Your breath smelled like pure alcohol and your eyes would get all wierd. Also, you would yell at me and get mean and pick fights for no reason. I know she is right and it made me feel like crap. Even though I miss the buzz, i know the alternative is out of control drinking. I cannot afford to continue that life. I don't want my daughter to remember her teens with a drunk mother either. Plus, i want to make positive changes in my lifew and be clearheaded . So in that regard, I will go on taking my 25 mg of Naltrexone daily. It has truly made a difference for me. I am glad it is helping you all as well.

The success rate they claimed to have at a clinic here in Florida is almost 90%....simply amazing stuff and you can buy it on line.
