    drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

    Thanks all,
I think this is still positive.. mostly because it is another option. In the past for me (in Australia) most GP's don't have any options or knowledge of anything helpful for problem drinking - they just automatically suggest you go to detox. It's black & white. (And they aren't very imaginative in detox either in my experience.)
For the rest of us, every new chance that something will help, even temporarily, is another chance at life! And you can't ask for more than that really. We just gotta keep trying, appreciate the chance and personally rise to the occasion! Just that bit of extra effort.
The number of new helpful things are growing and that means we are living in very fortunate times. How grateful I am that I am not struggling with this problem 40 years ago when there were little or no options. So if one option doesn't work then maybe there is another?? Just keep swimming...
I don't want to sound like a smartypants. My track record is not great and I am only new and trying stuff out, but I just wanted to point out the positive. I am walking around saying to myself "I want to live and I want to be happy" all the time at the moment to keep reminding me that there IS a future. :H
    Love & Gratitude

      Hi All,

i too am going to be using naltrexone. Are any of you combining this drug with other therapy? I've tried Nal before - but it didn't seem to dis my cravings for long - still i'm not sure just how sure my commitment has been.

today i ordered the starter kit and CDs to use along with my new prescription of Naltrexone just as soon as the support stuff gets here. and advice?

        drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

        Hi
I am doing naltrexone with the help of my GP and seeing a Drug and Alcohol counsellor once a week. Going along ok. Have had a couple of slip ups but the nal is a bit like a crutch to me. I look forward to taking it each day and think it is helping. Cravings are not that bad.
        Good luck.:l

          Pip,

I tried Naltrexone and my doctor gave me Campral as an adjunct.

They helped but did not address my underlying issue, which in MY case is anxiety.

Campral has been used by many on this site and my doc said it goes well with Naltrexone.

          Hope this helps!!

            drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

I've just started on Nal, third day.

Day 1 - usually drink 2 -3 or more glasses of wine. Had one beer.
Day 2 - usually drink 2-3 or more glasses of wine. felt sickish. Drank nothing.
Day 3 - as above. Went to get a beer, saw some AF beer in the larder had that instead. Don't really feel like anything else. Mr P out tonight, usually would use it as an excuse to sit with a "nice" glass of wine or bottle. Not tonight, JUST DON'T FANCY IT....amazing.

I think I've asked this before, but can you take Naltrexone if you've already been drinking? For example, let's say you've had a couple drinks and you mentally know you want to stop or slow down, so you take the Naltrexone to help? Does that work? Or does your body have to be AF when you take it?

                Hi Beatle,

I must admit that's what I did the other day. I left it too late to take it before the urge kicked in, so actually washed it down with a glass of wine! and then a bit later when were out for a meal, I had one other glass and it tasted of nothing and didn't have any "nice" effects on me, then someone bought me another glass and I couldn't face finishing it! Unheard of !

I'm convinced it's helping me more than the topa did.

ok, I think I'll try it, although I had a great experience with kudzu today-- my first try at it-- it dampened my desire, even made me throw away a drink (unheard of!)... so I think I'll keep up with that as long as it lasts.

Then you get someone like me who will drink through the drug, Naltrexone and/or Kudzu, to get the buzz I desire.

Big, I mean REALLY BIG, sigh.

                    I hate being me.

Hello all! I'm new here and find this discussion board so helpful! I live in Sweden where the AA and total abstinence is the only thing docs talk about. However I have been reading my way out and asked my doc to give me Nal. Started 5 days ago and from day 1 i could moderate without any problems! Considering I have been abusing alc for about 25 years this feels really really amazing! Good luck everyone!

                        drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

                        My nal arrived today...

I feel very encouraged at reading thru these posts - I ordered from River Pharmacy one week ago and they are here! That is to Australia so that is so good! I was skeptical and didn't know if it would even get here, customs had opened it up and all was OK.

My plan is to take it at 4pm every afternoon with a fresh vege juice - carrot, beetroot & celery with some lemon squeezed in it - how healthy!! :-)

I have the campral, but find that so 'hard' to stick to the 2 tabs three times a day!

I am also taking the kudzu, L Glut & Gaba.... shit, if this doesn't work, I think I am buggered!!! LOL

I know that the Revia is not a magic pill - I am determined, I know I need the change before something bad happens, I have ordered the cd's as well, and I am positive they will help - along with visiting this site EVERY day! It is so good to have the understanding and not have to worry about being 'judged'.

I am going to take 50mg, so Fickle, yes you can order from River Pharmacy and they will arrive.

Wish me luck, I will drop back to this thread tomorrow.

                        :thanks:

                            side effects

How about the side effects? Does Naltrexone cause nightmares, etc? I tried Cantix, but could not tolerate it. It did cut my drinking and smoking by 50% the first week. I was very excited, but the nightmares were causing me to get absolutely no sleep. I've been off a week and a half, and I'm right back to the old habits again. How long would it take it to get to the US? This is not something I could just ask my doctor for.

                                My experience

I'm no doctor; I'm relating only my experience.

First, when I was in rehab, twice did the meds nurse say that many found that the combo of Campral and Naltrexone was more effective than either alone. I had been taking Campral for a week or two with little results. I had the doc add in Naltrexone, and, maybe it's some sort of placebo effect, but it certainly made a difference for me, on the positive side. (And it was almost immediately!) I'm tapering off alcohol now, and I'm not finding it NEARLY as difficult to do as I did without the meds. In fact, last night I was thinking, hey, I've got a half pint in the cupboard. I truly had no desire for it and didn't bother to drink it. This isn't always the case, but it seems to be becoming more and more the case.

When I came home and would relapse, I would stop taking both the Campral and the Naltrexone, because I was afraid of mixing them with booze. I saw my phychiatrist just last week. He told me that it is okay t o take them both while drinking, that it stilll lessens the desire for alcohol. I am finding that very true. Again, thhis is my own experience.
