    drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

    Sinclair Method

Hello all, I am new here but saw this thread and thought i would chime in. There is a new book out by a Phd named Roy Eskapa specifically detailing The Sinclair Method entitled "The cure for alcoholism" I purchased this book and it explains in detail how Naltrexone should be used with alcohol. You should NOT take Naltrexone on days that you are not drinking, but only take it BEFORE a drinking session, over time this is supposed to create what they call "pharmicalogical exctinction" which basically means that it erases your desire and addiction to drink alcohol. You can choose to continue drinking in moderation or quit completely with one caveat... you MUST take naltrexone each time BEFORE you drink... Naltrexone only works if you drink while on it. The book can be purchased on Amazon.com and explains it way better than I can... now, I have not yet tried this, as I am currently abstinent, but if I do ever drink again I will certainly give this method a try. If anyone is truly interested in the Sinclair method, I suggest you buy this book! Dr. Sinclair has been researching this method for over 40 years and they claim an 80% success rate.

      drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

Hi, all! I just joined this forum as I wanted to chime in. I just stumbled on a book about the Sinclair Method (using naltrexone) and am well into reading it. It's called "The Cure for Alcoholism", and there's a website, thecureforalcoholism.com. Some of you, I see are already using it and getting good results. I haven't started it yet, but wanted to add some points here based on what I've learned from the book.

One, you absolutely MUST keep drinking and MUST take naltrexone for the method to work.

Two, the claim is that NOT ONLY is heavy, habitual drinking starkly reduced, but that the neural pathways that cause long-term addiction to alcohol are DELETED, constituting a true CURE. This claim is backed up by solid, exhaustive trials and endorsement from the AMA and the FDA.

Three, naltrexone is a generic drug, and should not be very expensive. My psychophrmacologist has no hesitation about prescribing, and I am seeing her this week to get started.

Four, you need to make sure you follow the 5-step plan METICULOUSLY (see the book) and preferably with medical supervision.

Five, there are some side effects, most commonly (10% of users) nausea. Naltrexone is non-addictive and safe, however.

Now, I am in AA and abstaining, but have a history of relapse. I don't seem to have any unmanageable cravings now but my last relapse occurred after 7 months of abstinence! So I am, naturally, very interested in the method as relapses cause me considerable suffering. I am eager for all information I can get, so please keep me posted. I am at tcumbie@nyc.rr.com.

        drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

Hey tcumbie, I'm on my second week of Naltrexone+drinking, I read the book too. So far I'm noticing a steadily decreasing desire to drink, even in two weeks, but it's still early to tell real results. I keep my drinking diary up to date every day, that's important. I take my naltrexone in the evening, and after 1 hour I just drink until I'm "good" that's it really, it does feel strange though because you get all the normal effects of drinking without that happy feeling of relief, at least that's how it works for me. Concerning symptoms, the only thing I feel is a slight time distortion 10 minutes after taking the pill which goes away soon, and I get irritated easily when I drink on naltrexone, probably because I wish that happy feeling was there, but isn't.
Good Luck, I'll let you know how I progress

I don't usually write but here goes. I have been reading this blog for a really long time and I did the MYO program for moderating. It worked ok but then I got sloppy and stopped taking the vitamins and listening to the tapes etc etc. You can probably guess the rest. Then I read an earlier message about Sinclair method and I didn't get the book but I started taking naltrexone and I also got more of the kudzu and glutamine and started listening to the shorter part of the tape, it's only 20 minutes. It has worked really well for me and it has been over a year now. I take 50 mgs of naltrexone. Plus I try to work out three times a week. Sometimes it takes will power but overall I feel like I have a LOT more control. I like to read the messages here too, it has helped quite a bit. Have a good day. :yay:

                Good morning all,
I have been hovering around this site for well over a year now and I am still struggling.
I have now decided to try this Sinclair Method. 1 question I do have though is how long before you are having a drink do you take the tablet.
I have been off and on naltrexone for about 18months, but just been taking a pill every morning, so thought this was worth a try. :thanks:

Per the book: at least 1 hour prior to drinking. Only take it on days you plan to drink.

                    drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

                    On Day 10 of Vivitrol

Ten days ago I received my first Vivitrol (naltrexone) injection that is good for a month. (The injection was painless and did not leave a knot, as some have experienced.) I would have preferred the pills but my Dr. likes Vivitrol so that people will stick with it. I also suspect he gets some kind of kickback since it is a new, expensive drug and this Dr. is big into clinical trial, etc.? I am doing the Sinclair method, and if things are still going well after three months or so I will ask again for pills so that I can selectively take the pills on drinking days. Right now I am drinking every day.
I was worried that I would experience withdrawal symptoms after the injection since I was not AF free for any days before receiving the injection. I was pleasantly surprised that my only symptoms were a little dizziness and fogginess the first two days. I have not experienced any symptoms since. It is such a thrill to be able to take or leave alcohol much of the time. I do not have the intense cravings I used to have. I drink at my usual times (since I am doing Sinclair and it is necessary to retrain my neural pathways). I am usually satisfied with two or three drinks - MUCH less than before - and I find myself leaving some drinks unfinished - previously unheard of!
Another welcome surprise is that I still experience the "warm" feeling I get from drinking alcohol. It is still soothing to a degree but I no longer get the buzz in my head. I hope the effects I am getting now will sustain themselves. If they do, I am very optimistic about the future!

                          drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

                          Hi Marbella,
It's been almost a month and things are still going well. I still drink but have not gotten drunk ever since my Vivitrol injection. I still feel some comfort from alcohol but no buzz in my head. I had normally been drinking in the afternoon and then later at night before bed and have all but eliminated the before bed drinking. I hope during the next month I will cut down more.
For those who cannot get their GP to prescribe Naltrexone/Vivitrol, I suggest going to a psychiatrist who has specialties in addiction psychaitry and/or psychopharmocology. My insurance is paying with no problem and no therapy/group meetings are necessary.

                              drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)

                              Hello, Everyone.

I have my Naltrexone pills in hand as well as Campral. (Psyche also added Lamictal for bipolar treatment.)

Between that and the Gabapentin and Verapamil for my other problem, I am a walking chemistry experiement.

I started the Campral a couple of days ago and will start the Naltrexone today. (She said it doesn't matter when I take the pill but I figure mentally, if I take it in the afternoon it will be a reminder not to drink.

In my case, I am trying to stay AF. However, her point is, if I don't, the Naltrexone should help. So I am going to attack it that way.

I sure hope my poor liver can handle all these drugs I am taking. :egad:

It is probably better than the vodka or wine I can throw back with impunity.

I hope Benedikt and Kimmy continue to post and keep everyone up-to-date on how it is going with them, too.

As I pack for my trip, between the meds and the supplements, I might have some space for my clothing.

Oh Cinders you poor love- I do feel for you.

Like you I have tried just about every med and don't react well to any off them. At least if you drink on the Naltrexone you know you won't end up a blubbering idiot, and after a few drinks you won't want anymore hopefully- I know you tried it before but I think you were trying NOT to drink on it?
