Thanks potato. I have the book on order. I am feeling pretty good with this program. When I got into trouble before is when I stop taking the Nal because I am feeling "in control." I am feeling more energy.

drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)
I've never used one of these sites of any kind. I have a drinking problem. 6-8 beers per day. Doc says I need to slow down. I know many who would consider my drinking almost not drinking. I just finished a book The Cure for Alcoholism by Roy Eskapa, Phd. which talks about the Sinclair Method and the use of naltrexone while drinking and how the drug works to block the endorphine receptors and inhibit their reception after they are released by the consumption of alcohol. Just wondered if anyone was familar with it.:new::new:

drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)
my fresh start, Hi, I am familiar with his ideas and I did just order the book and I am going to get it this week. I find Naltrexone very, very helpful for me. In the past I tried Topomax and it made me crazy, really did not go well with my mind. My brother however, stopped drinking entirely with the help of short term Topomax use. I am having good results with the Naltrexone, I am finishing my 10th day AF and I am having no cravings what-so-ever. I am not drinking although I think the book's program suggests that one drinks to "reprogram" one's brain. Well good luck, this site is really helpful, lots of info....

Oceanocean, I wish you all the best with your fresh start. I too am currently doing the Sinclir method. I won't know how successful it is for me for a while. I started it on October 6/08. It takes around 4 months to start seeing the difference in a significant way. The last time I had alcohol was Friday night. I took the pill one hour before. I don't get loaded usually since I started the method. Kind of have a buzz, but not really. Don't really care about the buzz. I just want to change. The best thing I have noticed since starting the method is that I don't drink and dial anymore and I am really happy about it. I don't wake up all full of shame about making a phone call I regret. So good luck.. Onward and upward.

Confused
Ok, everyone,
I am confused. Some people say you're suppose to drink while taking the naltrexone, and some people say don't take it at all if you are not drinking. Others say take it regardless. Does anyone have to right answer? I am confused now.

Bouchard01, I don't know whether Nal can be ordered and shipped to Canada. I am here ( in Canada)and get if from my doc. Sorry. Angelique, If you are following what is in the book about the Sinclair method then you take Nal one hour before you drink any alcohol. If you are not drinking you don't take it. If it is confusing then I suggest you order the book. It is pretty clearly explained in there. All the best. P

drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)
Hi -- I have ordered the book from Amazon and the Nal from River. My kudzu came from MWO; don't feel much effect from that yet, but hopeful. There is a podcast and a series of youtube vids about the Sinclair method that I found in this thread, and it prompted me to try it. Don't have the links handy, but if you google sinclair podcast you will find it, and search youtube for sinclair method. When I first read about Nal on this site, I did my homework and found a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that concluded Nal is ineffective for alcoholism, Also, R Jewell says in her book she tried it before topa but the effect wore off after awhile. After I heard about Sinclair, I went back and looked at the study again and the subjects were attempting abstinence. R Jewell also was trying to abstain using Nal. Sinclair himself says many clinical trials conclude Nal is not effective for abstinence, but is astonishingly successful for moderation. I can't wait to do my own little study. Sinclair emphasizes his method works without other support/therapy (i.e. the mice did not receive counseling or go to AA, and their excess drinking behavior was extinguished) but I am thinking of ordering the cd's anyway. I also want to address the anxiety issues that led to my overuse. I doubt the mice went through painful divorces. But I'm trying to see them as two distinct issues. I can't afford therapy right now. I found a great FREE online CBT site called moodgym. I honestly think it's helping. It's geared more toward adolescents but there's something in it for everyone. Some here (oceanocean) have had success w/ abstinence on Nal, which is great. I guess that why they call it MY Way Out. I see this site as a supplier of tools, and we do what works for us.

drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)
I'm new here and just saw this thread. I take naltrexone and was prescribed it when I was in treatment. It does NOT Work for me..in fact, it is frustrating. I am considering taking the topriamate instead and seeing how it works. The only thing naltrexone does for me is give me dry heaves after drinking- and although I've noticed I cut down a bit (from 5 bottles to perhaps 2) it was my idea that naltrexone was supposed to help you stop cravings...it hasn't. which is frustrating.

You most likely WILL continue to crave alcohol while on the Naltrexone. Just keep drinking as you normally do. Don't make a conscious effort to reduce your drinking unless your safety or immediate health is involved. Trying to cut back or quit deliberately is just an exercise in frustration - that is why AA and other abstinence programs have such dismal success rates. Who wants to live with horrible cravings for the rest of their life?
Every drink you take while on Naltrexone chips away at the association your brain has made between alcohol and endorphin-induced pleasure. Abstaining defeats this purpose.
Your goal is to eventually see your cravings and inclination to drink diminish or disappear. This will happen naturally over the course of at least 4 months, perhaps longer. Don't rush it and try not to get frustrated by a seeming lack of progress. Just take your Naltrexone and drink.
I have been on Naltrexone for two months now and have noticed a dramatic decrease in my craving for alcohol. I'm still drinking and in fact, sometimes (only in the last week) have to force myself to drink even though I don't really feel like it.
As Dr. Eskapa says over and over: Drinking + Naltrexone = Cure. I would add time and a dose of patience to the equation.

the whole Sinclair method has not yet been accepted in North America. Except a clinic in Florida I heard of. It is frustrating for people dealing with the regular medical community. This, even though so many people in other parts of the world have been helped. ? strange to me.

Mike with a dream;512351 wrote: The book "The Cure for Alcoholism" addresses all of the questions that you have on Naltrexone. I strongly recommend that you buy it and make your own conclusions. So far it's worked for me. Nothing else has, so I'm sticking with it.
Interestingly, in studies of Naltrexone where people were told to remain abstinent, those who fell off the wagon actually had better outcomes. Why? Naltrexone+Drinking=Cure. Naltrexone+Abstinence=Cravings & Frustration.
