drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)
:new: I tried Topamax, but as I had just had eye surgery, I thought it best to not take it due to the side effects it can have on the eye. I am very interested in the naltrexone. I too seem to have a problem once I start. Using the MWO supplements has helped, but once I have one drink, I'm back to square one. What are the side affects? Any advise you can give would be great.:teeter:

Side effects
Hi Cinnamon, and welcome. The side effects of naltrexone are most often nausea or spaciness/headache, but these usually go away after the first week.

Response from Dr. Eskapa
ldhkah57,
I am also sober now (10 months) and asked this exact same question over at the other board. Here is the response from Dr. Eskapa:
THE SINCLAIR METHOD IN NOT FOR THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY ABSTINENT AND DOING WELL WITH ABSTINENCE.
THIS IS ABSOLUTE. WE DO NOT WISH TO DUPE ANYONE WHO HAS ACHIEVED ABSTINENCE INTO THINKING THE SINCLAIR METHOD IS AN EXCUSE FOR RETURNING TO ALCOHOL.
IT IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY DRINKING... WHO HAVE RELAPSED BACK TO HEAVY DRINKING OR WISH TO REGAIN CONTROL OVER THEIR ADDICTION... WHICH IT WILL DO FOR ABOUT 80 % OF FOLKS. GIVEN TIME - 3 TO 4 MONTHS UP TO 6 MONTHS. IT IS ALSO INTENDED FOR EXCESSIVE 'SOCIAL DRINKERS' WHO WANT TO CUT BACK OR AIM FOR ABSTINENCE, OR CUT BACK CRAVING AND DRINKING TO SAFE LEVELS: ALL THIS FOR SOCIAL, HEALTH OR PERSONAL REASONS.
DR ROY
I too was looking for approval to go out and try this program. Unfortunately I did not get it. Bottom line though it is ulitmately my decision which I still ponder to this day.
NeakerStaying AF one day at a time...

I wouldn't budge. It takes 3-4 months MINIMUM for the sinclair method to work. What we are finding on the sinclair method forums is that it takes some people EVEN LONGER, yet they still get cured.:nutso: I take pride in my humility :nutso:

Hi Blondemerlot - at the two month mark some of the signs that it is working may be very subtle...are you tracking how many units you drink?
Also, you asked if you should take it in the morning -- do you drink in the morning? You just need to take the 50mg 1 hour before you start drinking. 50mg should cover you for 24 hours.
I am on week 24...I am, for lack of any better word, cured (have been since around week 19). I have zero cravings for alcohol now. I don't take a pill unless I drink but I don't normally drink anymore. The thought of drinking is just not on my mind...if I do drink with dinner or with friends it's only 1 drink and then I don't want anymore. It's really quite amazing as I do not have to take any medication now except when I decide to take those stray drinks. If I decide to just stay AF, it would not be an issue at all at this point.
I hope you stick with it - it has been one of the most amazing things that's happened to me...I've been struggling with alcohol at various levels since I was 13 so this is a whole new life for me...and it only took a bit over 4 months for me. Reductions in drinking levels do happen prior to the final cure so watch for that as well.
Best of luck!

drinking on Naltrexone (sinclair method)
drunknomore?;203682 wrote: Hi there,
I have a friend in Scandinavia whose father had a really, really bad problem for years- he was finally effectively treated in Finland a few years ago by a Dr. Sinclair using Naltrexone. So I became interested in Naltrexone and did a lot of online research and discovered that this guy does things differently from most in that he thinks Naltrexone isn't so good for abs but works really well to moderate even a very heavy alcoholic's drinking ( this is what happened with my friend's Dad, and so far, with me). You can look it up on Wikipedia if you put in "Sinclair Method". The few peple I've discussed it with say its not very well known here or much on the web because controlled drinking doesn't fly as a concept in the US, and since nal doesn't do a great job for abs its kind of put to one side as a treatment option here. And, since most of the people seeing Dr. Sinclair et al are writing in Finnish or other languages, so it doesn't have a big google presence. Also, I guess naltrexone's patent is running out or something so its not worth the drug company's time and money to launch a campaign to change people's minds on the subject? (This bit I don't really know about).
Anywy, so far its really working for me. Its weird because there are a lot of questions I have now about my drinking that specifically derive from having one or two drinks only and not wanting more (like: if it doesn't affect me at all then why do I feel pressure socially to have another?)- very different questions than I had in AA when I was fighting cravings and feeling bad about being an alcoholic (how could I do that? What happened in my childhood to make me this way? How can I make up to people my self-indulgence?). Also, now I feel no worse about being an alcoholic than I do about being depressed enough to need anti-depressants. I now really do view it as a disease- much moreso than I did in AA. The whole thing leaves me a lot more confident in general - I am not a "bad" person, I just need to take responsibility for myself by acknowledging my problem and addressing it in the most effective way I know - so far for me that's naltrexone. I just hope it keeps working - I think it will, if it doesn't then onto the next thing, but for now I have definitely been a "social" drinker since I went on it (instead of 2 bottles of wine a night) and am generally much cheerier and optimistic about life!!
Hope that helps,
DNM
I am in Australia, so does that make a difference?
Hope someone has a answer ...
:thanks:MWO is a blessing, thank you.

Just another quick reply, my life has completely changed since listening to the MWO hypnotherapy tapes. The first I listened to was the 'Clearing' CD and my husband was just staring at me when he arrived home from work. He said "you are so different".
That was 1 hour of my time to listen to the CD.
Briiliant stuff.MWO is a blessing, thank you.

Naltrexone - Day 4
Okay I started Nal on Monday and today is Thursday. I am feeling very nauseous and have read that this is a side effect for some people. Has anyone experienced this nauseous feeling right away and does it go away? It's very annoying. The nauseousness is enough to keep me from drinking. I'm making myself drink because I know you're supposed to drink while taking it. I really think this is something that could work for me. I just hope the nauseousness goes away.
Anyone have any suggestions?? I thought about breaking the 50 mg. tablets in half and taking 25 mgs. for a few days before taking the whole 50.
