    TOPAMAX HELP HAS ANYONE LOST THEIR HAIR

    HI Folks

    Am looking towards taking TOPAMAX and have read the various side effects including hair loss. Have started to read the thread on Topa but with it being 30+ pages long it is time consuming. I also like to take the time to read other threads. MWO is quite addictive isn't it because it is so great - and soooooooo much better than spending time drinking

    Very concerned about the hair loss side effect though. I have only seen a couple of posts on it. What I really, really want to know is the loss permanent or temporary and how soon did it start after starting the Topa. Also how much hair do you lose and does it fall out in great lumps - sorry to sound so dramatic but I can cope with a bit of hair loss if I know it is going to come back after I stop taking the Topa

    Hi Sweetpea,

    Just wanted to let you know that I have not personally experienced hair loss.. but as noted before, my dose is still quite low so I don't know if it is a side effect of a higher dose??

      Hi Sweetpea,
      I've been taking topa for almost 2 years now, at 100mg per day(pretty low dose)
      I have experienced a thinning of my hair, which I was quite concrened about. But it doesn't seem to be getting any worse. Also, it could be my age & hormones... ... I'm 47.

      It hasn't come out in clumps, I've just noticed more in my brush, and I don't have as much hair as I used to. ( I wear mine long, I notice it's not as thick when I pull it back, or braid it.)

      I did get my hair cut a few weeks ago & my hairdresser commented that I have a lot of new growth in the back.
      I also take biotin, as a back up, just for the heck of it. Supposed to be great for your hair. Sometimes I take prenatal vits too.(just for hair...)
      The only thing worth stealing is a kiss...:flower: zwink:

        I took topa and didnt have any hair loss, but i have noticed those who do were on the higher doses ( higher than about 100MG) and hair loss started about 6 months in...i dont recall anyone saying they lost hair in clumps...just thinning. If you have thick hair you wont even notice if you do get that side effect.

          Hi Sweetpea,

          I have just started taking topa again and have taken it before for extended periods. If you do not take really high doses, then I don't think that hair loss should be a problem. I had hair loss due to thyroid and hormone issues and now that I take appropriate vitamins, even though I take topa I think my hair is getting thicker (and I am almost 45!!).

          I don't plan on going over 25-50 mg though.

            Never experienced hair loss with Topa.

            However-I did wash out clumps when I drank. The dehydration from drinking & loss of vitamins caused me to pull out strands whenever I washed my hair. Goes to show you-drinking caused my hair to fall out & skin to look like crap!

              Hi Sweetpea,
              I to have been researching topamax. I recommend this website: topamax in the Askapatient database.
              Just type this in your tool bar. On a 5 to 1 basis, the drug rated a 3. Many side effects.

                It looks like from your answers that it is thinning of hair as opposed to dramatic hair loss but I will research the ask patient database thanks for that advice Mercer

                For the time being although I have got the TOPA I am holding back starting it as the sups seem to be helping to the extent that I am now 22 days AF. But I feel really good knowing that I have got it as insurance in case sups alone stop working. I still want as much info as I can though in case I start taking it

                  When I first found this website I was very excited and wanted to get the topamax. But after reading what it has done to many people I won't use it. It would be great to hear from others if I'm overacting from what I've read about this drugs side effects. I did want to try it...But??????
                  It's seems as I read the posts here many have success with out the drug. :new:

                    Sweetpea, I agree that the side effects are better than the drunk. I have cut down to less than half of what I was drinking, and my skin, eyes, and hair all look much better. the prenatal vits. are great for hair too. It's so good to see my green eyes not looking like a Christmas tree when I get up.

                      sweetpea ... i'm having thinning hair/hair texture changes @ just 50 mg (i have thin hair anyhow) and so starting the biotin and selenium recommended in the book. btw, you can read a lot about hair loss and topa at MadeByMark.com .... a site about topa mostly by folks taking it for reasons other than alcohol. i was searching it using "find" and the words "hair loss" and a LOT came up ... some of it not too pretty. still, i'm staying on a low dose of the med (don't plan on going above 75 mg since i'm starting to be able to really control my drinking @ 50 mg) ... figure some hair is a small measure to pay for the control i was otherwise unable to get if i'm really truthful with myself about it.

                        Hair today / Gone tomorrow - Topa

                        I have been on Topa at varios doses (as high as 300) for a year. I am a 46 year old male with very fine hair. I have been using minoxidil since I was in my 20's to fight hair loss on the crown of my head. So I am very aware of what is going on my pate. My observation is that Topa did initially cause hair loss. It appears to me that the hair grew back, but they are different in texture.

                        I have also noticed a huge difference in my beard. Although I am blond, I have an unusally heavy dark beard. I know that drinking effects beard growth and I have stopped drinking - so I do not know if it is the Topa or the drinking but my beard is probably 30% as dense as it has been all of my life.

                        My 2 cents.

                            Yes, I lost a lot of hair and it's just now coming back. Just wasn't a good thing for me. My hair was thin already.
