    'Got the script!

Well, my doc (a D.O.) was not as receptive as I had liked but he listened to me and set me up with the topa. Here's the way he wrote it.
    Week 1: 25mgs twice a day
    Week 2: 50mgs twice a day
    Week 3: 75mgs twice a day
And week 4 will be a wait and see......
From what I've read, I may not need to go up to 200mgs. He wants me to check in with him on and off (his office is just around corner from my house!) and tell him what is going on with me.
I'm very excited and anxious to see what will happen! I pray this will work...I've promised to be DF in December and damn it, I want it to happen!
Will you guys follow me along on this "drug trial" of sorts????
Thank you all for your time and attention.

        not alone

Hi USMgirl, I usually don't check the meds thread but I did today. Your doctor seems to be really open to the topa and that is great! I will be checking in to see how it is going for you. See you around the boards! Suz

Hey I am really happy for you USMgirl.
I went to my doc almost a year ago armed with the MWO book, wall street article etc etc and he refused (bit behind in the UK).
Really hope it works for you and your body.
          xx

            Not sure if it's working...

I start 150 mgs on Wed....maybe I'll begin to see a change...when I do drink i think there is a taste change now...but I still am drinking a lot....I am still craving it! I just want a magic switch or big button to push!!! Maybe it's just not a good time......maybe I'm just hopeless.....I'm not giving up....I"m gonna stick it out with the meds....:argh:

USMGirl, I thought I was hopeless too. But I don't drink as much now. I drink about 2 nights a week and really not that much then. I've had the same bottle of vodka in the freezer for three weeks now! Used to go through two big bottles in a week. I just don't want it, but sometimes I convince myself I should want it because it's there, really weird. Or I think I should want it because we are having people over and I should just want a drink. But I really don't want it, I just don't. Hang in there. What is a lot for you? 150 mg should help, I would think.

                questions

                Hello:
Somewhat new to this. I have a doctor's appointment on 12/21 to ask about the topamax. I am concerned from reading the book about the "cognitive" problem--I already forget words, names etc. How bad does it get? Roberta seems to imply that that side effect lessens. If so, how long? Has anyone tried Provigil or Modanafil? Do they work? Do you tend to be that sleepy on Topamax? Thanks. Salem

Hi Salem: I was just perscribed Provigil for ADD. I take it along with wellbutrin (depression) and so far ir is really great as far as focus and energy go. I have never tried Topomax (hubby started it) although I have tried Naltrexone in the past. Do. Dr's perscribe provigil for alcohol related issues as well??? Just curious

USM girl ... one question for you: WHEN do you take it??? I've found that it makes a big difference. I'm up to 100 mg, which controls cravings just fine so long as i take it with breakfast or mid-morning, then at about 4pm (i.e., at least an hour or two before i'd start to drink). Then it controls cravings very well. If I take the second dose before bed, though, it doesn't control the evening cravings as well. I do think the dosage at which it controls your cravings has a lot to do with your own body chemistry, weight and the extent of your addiction issues, though. It has been like a switch flipping for me, though. I do still crave a drink. But I crave "a" drink. Not another and another and another. Or if I crave a second usually I can say to myself "nah ... have a cup of tea instead" and actually do it. Which was so utterly impossible before. Do stick with it. And try timing the doses differently to see if that makes a difference.

                      (PS, just to be clear ... i'm taking 100 mg total a day ... 50 mg @ around 10am and another 50 mgs @ around 4pm).

I have a Doctor's appointment right after Christmas. I too am very nervous about the depth of the cognitive problems. My job absolutely requires me to be spot on at a moments notice. An replies as to the depth of the cognitive problems from other's expierience is helpful and appreciated.

                          Failure,,,,again.

Goodness! I've not posted in soooo long....guess I didn't want to admit that I'd given up.
I got up to the 150mgs/day....75 in am/75 in pm.....but I just got so crazy busy and stressed with the holidays that I started missing doses and just stopped taking it....my drinking hasn't changed at all...still everyday, still more than I should. I did get the feet tingling and yucky diet cola tastes!

After reading your posts, I'm so sorry that I stopped....I don't know if my doc will renew my script or not. I guess I will order online to try again...
Thank you all for your comments.

Well, I just thought about something....I have drank this month, but I haven't been drunk not one time.... a little buzzed maybe at Christmas party on the 8th here at my home, but that's it.....I guess that is one good thing. My husband and I have ALWAYS partied on New Year's, but this year we are staying at home....another good thing. I guess that's something to feel good about.
Happy New Year to you all!

Ok, I'm gonna start again today....maybe my timing is off as to when I should take it...
Would like to hear from you guys about that. :thanks:

                              Hey there, USM...

I found that on Try 2, I did much better cutting down and then having many AF days in a row. I was never a morning or afternoon drinker, but the witching hour was my downfall. Found that taking a dose around four before heading home from work (and making sure I had a cup of tea when I got home to "break the habit") helped. Also, be sure to do the cds as well. Found they were the make or break for me.
