Great Newsweek article - mentioned several treatments
I just finished a fabulous article in the current online version of Newsweek (link below). It points out what my experience with Topamax has shown me - neuroscience and not the social and spiritual ?sciences? alone ? holds the key to breakthrough treatments for addictions ? to include alcoholism.
Brain chemistry and genetic variation based models - not the often offered character flaws and ?willpower? theories - offer the best explanation for predispositions to addiction. Why do 90% of users have one drink and walk away but 10% (like myself) have to have a half dozen of more before we can stop? Once scientists understood how depression and serotonin levels were related ? effective treatments followed. Now they are beginning to understand the same thing with the GABA and glutamate interaction. Topamax eliminates the dopamine rush that I used to get from alcohol thru this interaction.
My escape from the alcohol trap was not as dramatic as Annie Fuller?s (the Vivitrol user in the story) ? like Vivitrol ? Topamax has made me fairly disinterested in drinking. I miss the "buzz" but the last time that I did drink on Topamax I did not get the dopamine rush and got very little out of the experience. I did get a big hang over. At this point I am still very happy with the results from Topamax and the My Way Out Program.
