    just curious

I know that there are a lot of different benzo's out there: librium, xanax, valium, etc. They all seem to have a relaxing effect and affect the same areas as alcohol - which I assume is why they are used for withdrawal. But some seem to be prescribed more than others for withdrawal, such as librium and valium(diazepam?).

My question: Can any benzo potentially be used for alcohol withdrawal or do some just not work?

    Thanks,

I don't know the answer to that, but my guess is that they are all probably good for easing the symptoms of withdrawal.

If you have been a heavy drinker, Ativan (lorazepam) is a good choice as it is especially good for anxiety and, very importantly, it is an anti-convulsant (also used for epilepsy).

As I understand it, Ativan is the most used in the U.S. for alcohol detoxing.

      Jimbo,

In rehab, they used phenobarbitol for me. However, after I got out, I looked it up and it is one of the oldest "anti convulsants" and one of the CHEAPEST. :H

It worked very well, though. I had absolutely no withdrawals, I was just a zombie for 4 days.

Librium is the "usual" here in the U.S. but any anti-convulsant is good. You do not want to have a seizure.

I would do whatever your doctor's suggest.
