Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

    SoberBamBam,

I would ask a doctor about Campral and whether you could only take an evening dose. My understanding of Campral and what it might do (even the medical community is unsure of how it works) is that you would still need to take the appropriate dosage for your weight, etc.

Also, you can drink on Campral in the sense that it will not interact negatively, etc. But, why bother with Campral if you are going to keep drinking? It is a drug intended for those attempting to go AF.

Naltrexone may be a drug you might want to consider if you want to continue to drink.

I would definitely get RJ's book and read it, if I were you.

A person attempting to change to moderate drinking is recommend to start out with at least a 30 day AF period. I have read this recommendation other places, too.

However, I do want to say :welcome: and I hope you do find a good path to follow that leads to your desired goals.

TiredofHiding: sorry to hear your Campral isn?t covered. It?s unfortunate (and short sighted) when insurance companies don?t underwrite the cost of anti-craving medications.

I can tell you from our experience that some people find a few months on the meds is enough to get them started on the road to recovery and it frees them of acute physical craving. It's an excellent time to explore some of underlying reasons we drink excessively.

Other individuals have found cravings tend to return if/when they reduce their dosage or eliminate medication from their program, so it is helpful to continue longer term, much as a diabetic would rely on insulin. This is nothing to be ashamed of. Alcohol dependence is a serious medical condition and requires treatment. You?ll need to work closely with your health care provider to make sure you choose the proper course and get the treatment you deserve.

Regardless of which approach you take, we encourage you to adopt as many facets of MWO as possible (e.g. online support, hypnotherapy, nutritional supplementation, relaxation, exercise.) New research also indicates that recovery from addiction is often paralleled by spiritual growth. Prayer, contemplation, yoga, Zen and meditation all have a positive impact on physiological processes in the brain and can be instrumental in helping to prevent relapse. Be sure to make time in your busy day for moments of inspiration. It can make all the difference!

      Wishing you the very best,

      RJ
This was a post from last February that I had missed.

I want to say that it is clear evidence of what an incredible woman RJ is.

I am so grateful I found MWO. I may not be where I want to be yet, but I can say that without this site, my friends here, and RJ, I would be much worse off than I am now and perhaps even dead. Not a joke.

Serious stuff, here, people and with RJ and all of you, my life has become better and I am nowhere near as despondent nor do I feel hopeless.

Today, I feel hopeful and grateful.

Thank you, my friends and a big thank you to RJ.

      Love,

Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

        Cindi,

Thanks for the reply... I have quit drinking. I was just trying to give you information on my personal situation... I seem to be a habitual drinker; that is I got myself in a habit of self medicating at the end of the day by drinking every evening; not to the point of drunkenness, but to the point of damaging my body.... I have quit and want to continue... But I want to get over that initial craving each evening....

Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

I haven't been on here in a while either and was just poking around reading old posts of mine - looking at how far I've come.

I used Campral for 3 months - actually more like 2.5 - and it helped get me going. I had some struggles after that, but since August 25 last year am AF 100%. I really feel like I've made it. I don't crave it at all, I do fine in the social situations where there is alcohol, my husband can have it at home and I dont' want it.

I will celebrate 6 months AF on the 25th of this month!

I took my printout of the book to my doctor at my last checkup and told her she should read it and recommend it to anyone who comes in struggling. she had heard about it but had never read the book so I hope she can help others in that way.

Thanks RJ - you saved my life and gave me back my joy!

Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

I have quit drinking for a month almost every year in January since I left my government job in 1999, always going back to it even though I really liked feeling great, sleeping well and saving all that money. This time, three weeks ago, I went back to drinking two days before an appointment with my doctor. I begged him to give me something to help me quit without going to counciling. He relented and gave me a prescription for Campral, told me not to start taking it until I had not drank for 5 days. Now, as of today I am back to not drinking. I hope the campral helps me. I want to start taking the stuff right away if I can. The medicine didn't come with any side affect info. Sorry for the rambling, my question to anyone too is, will it hurt to start taking it now?

I've done the AA thing, it seemed like a new addiction to me even though it helped me stay sober for 5 months in 1993. Hi Slamma and welcome to MWO. I dont know where you live but Campral is not a controlled substance and yes you can get it off your doctor, or I could anyway Im in UK. Just go and ask about it, if your doc doesnt know about it ask them to look it up.

I'm determined, and know I'm going to have a bit of an argument with myself after work tonight, (my usual fav time to drink), but think I'll come home and get on here instead. I'm going to be tired too, because last night I woke up at least every hour. :thanks: :thanks:
did you come home and go to bed?
