Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

Wow - I went to the pharmacy last night to pick up my first full one month supply (been using the patient starter pack from doc for the first week). 180 pills is $130!!! Sheesh. (I have pitiful self-employment insurance that doesn't cover much). My DH was great and said I probably spent that in Al each month if not more and that its not forever but I was still shocked! :wow:

We do this for about three months, right? Do we wean off of it eventually or go cold turkey? Is everyone taking 2 morning, 2 afternoon and 2 night?

    Thanks!

6 per day and my doc says I can be on it a 'long time' and then taper off.
          Good luck.

My insurance would not cover campral. I decided I didn't care what it cost...and you are right, at $70+ a week for wine, I am ahead on $$ by doing this. I have been so blessed that it has been a miracle drug for me. Going on 3 mos. AF and could not have done it without the pills. Don't think I am not tempted...but it has been that extra aid that has helped me tremendously. And I have been a heavy drinker for 30 years!

Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

I've been reading up on Campral, and have had the bottle of them since yesterday, but the info I've read says the person needs to be abstinent. I'm not sure if I qualify since my last drink was Sunday night. Does anyone know how long you are supposed to be abstinent? Also has anyone had side effects? Thanks so much.

                Hi Reallywannagothere,
Start taking the campral now and try not to drink. I found that they seem to do the trick and everything is working for me, although the side effects listed on the leaflet do happen especially the gas and runny bum. this is my fifth week on campral and I will probably go a few months on the medication. The drug is supposed to kick in after a few days anyway and hopefully you will soon feel the differance even if its just a placebo effect. the first few days are tricky but try and stick with it.
Let us know how you get on.

                  campral advice

Thanks so much. I had thought I'd try to go ahead and start. Appreciate your advice. I'm determined, and know I'm going to have a bit of an argument with myself after work tonight, (my usual fav time to drink), but think I'll come home and get on here instead. I'm going to be tired too, because last night I woke up at least every hour. :thanks: :thanks:

                    How long on meds

Hi everyone and welcome, new members, to MWO. Really glad you found us.

TiredofHiding: sorry to hear your Campral isn?t covered. It?s unfortunate (and short sighted) when insurance companies don?t underwrite the cost of anti-craving medications.

I can tell you from our experience that some people find a few months on the meds is enough to get them started on the road to recovery and it frees them of acute physical craving. It's an excellent time to explore some of underlying reasons we drink excessively.

Other individuals have found cravings tend to return if/when they reduce their dosage or eliminate medication from their program, so it is helpful to continue longer term, much as a diabetic would rely on insulin. This is nothing to be ashamed of. Alcohol dependence is a serious medical condition and requires treatment. You?ll need to work closely with your health care provider to make sure you choose the proper course and get the treatment you deserve.

Regardless of which approach you take, we encourage you to adopt as many facets of MWO as possible (e.g. online support, hypnotherapy, nutritional supplementation, relaxation, exercise.) New research also indicates that recovery from addiction is often paralleled by spiritual growth. Prayer, contemplation, yoga, Zen and meditation all have a positive impact on physiological processes in the brain and can be instrumental in helping to prevent relapse. Be sure to make time in your busy day for moments of inspiration. It can make all the difference!

                    Wishing you the very best,

                    RJ

                      on the cost of camral

Go to the web page and look for patient presciption assistance, they send 3 months at a time to your doctor free of charge. You might have to get a bit creative with your financial status, but they really do not follow up. I make enough money and they still send me the meds. You just need to be creative and with a few white lies! Hope this helps.

Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

I have been using campral for only a few days and I feel like the girl I was 20 years ago - normal... I have some headaches but no other signs of discomfort. I am ecstatic at the thought that I may be conscious of wanting a glass of red, but I don't have that encompassing need that sends me to the bottle shop EVERY night. Good luck

The amount of meds is determined by body weight, under 60 kg - is 2-1-1 each day. I have started on this and doimg fine ( 62kg this week - but no drink means next week 59kg)

Holy Cow - cost of Campral!

I'm a moderate drinker and I don't consider myself to have a dependency problem, but my doctor thinks I might. I don't know if I should start taking Campral because I only have 4 weeks worth of the meds and I have no prescription or insurance. Also, the pamphlet says that I should be abstinate from drinking, but I like to have a few drinks every Wednesday.

If I take Campral, that means that I cannot have my weekly drink night, right? And more importantly, is it safe if I completely run out of the pills and abruptly go off of them with out weening off? The dose is very high and there is no way that I can afford these pills if my doctor cannot supply me with samples any more. How long should I take these pills? Is just a couple of months enough?
Help, help, help, I need more information.

                              Cost

                              Hey Vivitrolanyone,

I can't find the patient assistance link can you post a link? A question for everyone: If you only crave a drink in the evenings do you need to take the drug all day. I never have the urge to drink till the day is done;unfortunately I have 4 or 5 each night... Just curious...
