I hate to say this, but if you let yourself get as out of control as I have been, you will have all the above symptoms without the Topa!! Truly.

Good luck on getting the Topamax through the doctor, though. I believe that is the wisest path to take if at all possible.

I ended up being horribly allergic to it and was glad I had a doctor to show my symptoms to. She said I simply can't take it.

    Good luck, all!!

Bambi-I never ordered from River before. But from every one else has said they received white pills with TOP on one side and 25 on other. When I got a script from my doctor that's the way they are supposed to be. Generic can be different. The ones I got from River are generic ((Topirol). The Pills were manufactured by a company i looked up in India. I also have a box from In House that ships from New Zeland whose Topamax manufacturer is Janssen-Cilag-and that is legit (more expensive). Bambi-let me know what you get.

On a side note: I have not been on Topa in over a year, I had been prescribed Topa 3 yrs ago by my Doctor (that's how I found MWO-I researched what he prescribed). I usually take Topa around this time of year as I anticipate my cravings might appear.

        generic Topamax

        Dax,

For me all the stuff about blubbering and memory loss and hair falling out was rather over blown ? the tingling limb was real but minimal ? but I guess everyone is different. Hopefully your Dr. will prescribe and you can get the real Topamax and it will work for you as it has for me ? for me its like an invisible hand on the craving light switch. The old feeling is still there ? I get to the car at the end of the long day and the first thing I think about is my old buddy the 6-pack ? but almost as quickly the desire goes away. The whole experience is very convincing that this really is a chemical imbalance in the brain (and in my case probably inherited) and really is nothing to be ashamed about (any more than the color of ones eyes). Dax - good luck with your doctor and your treatment - let us know.

          Breez,

i just recieved my order and got the same as you, generic - topirol. I ordered from them in December and recieved the actual Topamax. Hope this stuff works the same!

          Thanks for the info.

            Aclepsa/Topirmate--out of business?

I just wrote the longest message and it disapeared...Forgive me if it shows up in some other thread and you're all seeing this again!
Anyway - Got 'em!! My Doc gave me the pills. Told her I was having migranes since Christmas - and she wrote out a subscription for Topamax. Done - didn't even have to ask. You guys should try it. Here we all are running around the internet paying a ton for the stuff coz we're embarrased to make it public, when we could simply fake it!! If your Doc. doesn't volunteer to put you on it, tell him/her that you have a friend who also suffers from Migs. and told you about the amazing mig.med. called Topa and the wonders it has done for them.

Its worth a shot. I'm so thrilled to start ...tonight... eek!

"Its a miracle", thanks so much for your support. Especially you letting me know that the side effects don't plague everyone. Its reassuring to hear how well you've done and after only one month. What dosage are you at? Would you mind sharing what dosage you started at etc? I consider you somewhat of a role model now thanks to your success and calming approach to this whole maddness!!

            Thanks again.

              Dax,

Good on you for "facking" migraines and getting the Topamax.

I was honest with my doc and I am allergic to the Tosa. DAMNN

              She said, "Damn" too!!

              I love my Doc.

I am sitting here waiting for a scipt that makes it "all beter." and there is NONE.

              I am totally screwed. Totally.

My hubby i s one his way home and here I am. Totally screwed.
              I love all of you.

Dax-there are some people that order on-line because of insurance purposes. I have a limit on how much I can spend a year on scripts, appts etc and if I go over budget it goes out of pocket. Some people here have no insurance. Going thru the pharmacy I'm spending twice as much and as I stated in my previous thread I use it for two months out of the year & feel no need to see the Dr. & get a script for only two months and have to pay for an appt/labs/script.

                  Cindi,
So sorry to hear about your allergy to Topa. Who knows...maybe I'm allergic too (coz thats the kind of luck I have..) and we can be miserable together.

I believe R.J talks about other med. alternatives tho. Maybe you can ask Dr. Garcia? or see if anything else has worked for others.

I was on a med called chantix to quit smoking, and altho it wasn't strong enough to stop my drinking completely, while I was on it, I did have less of a desire to drink. As a matter of fact R.J mentions it in her blog..

I think L-glutamine helped me a little too. I also got the SamE and the AllOne multivit. Maybe its all pyschological - who knows... just don't give up...

                    Breez,
Point taken..I guess for those who have really good insurance its worth a shot. I'm very fortunate.
I paid close to $100 for the brown pills from India and $15 for 60 of the real thing...

                      Topamax dosage

                      Dax,

Congratulations on getting your Dr. to prescribe ? at least now you will know the quality of the drugs ? hopefully they will also be cheaper. As to dosage there is a great chart on page 119 of the MWO book. Highly recommend that you get the book. The basic recommendation is to go up slowly to get use to the side effects ? 25 mg the first week, 50the second, 75 the third ? up to the max 300 mg dosage. The chart also has you never take more than 100mg at one setting ? so break it up morning and afternoon.

I have been going up more slowly ? escalating as I get use to the drug and the desire to drink reappears ? I plan to bump up another 25mg next week. I am also taking Olmifon (also recommended by RJ) to help with what some call the ?fog?. I found that to be (for me) a worse side than word loss. Its kind of like the feeling you have in the morning before coffee but worse and the Olmifon helps to snap you out of it.

Hope this helps ? maybe after you have some documented success you can go back and be upfront with your Dr. My plan has always been to try to find a Dr. who would prescribe and treat with Topamax - but I needed to make sure the plan would work first ? best of luck.

                        Aclepsa/Topirmate--out of business?

Everyone reacts differently to drugs. Frankly, I got pretty sick on topa when I got up to 125mg and had to titrate down. I am at 100mg and am leveling off with the side effects (nauseau, tiredness, dopiness, loss of words, etc.). I have been on it for almost two months and it has taken that long for my body to adjust. But it is worth it to me because it has completely taken away that "drinking debate" in my head.

I am 21 days AF and don't think I will ever touch AL again. All depends on how bad you want to quit and what you are willing to go through to be sober. Some people do it through willpower, some depend on AA - I use topamax, supplements and this site (and put up with topa side effects)....It is not easy - nothing in life that is worth something ever is.

                          Its a Miracle,

Thanks for your reply. The book arrived yesterday and I am eagerly reading it now! You are absolutely right about leveling with the Doc once the treatment is proven to work for me. I'm also hoping I don't have to be on Topa forever. My plan is to get the alcohol out of my system, break the psychological habit and then hopefully abstain.
                          We'll see....
                          Thanks again.

Dax (and anyone else) I'm proof it can be done. A goal & a plan. Reward yourself for small progress -of course not with alcohol! Always have back-up plans. Never look at the big picture-it's to broad and overwhelming. Saying "I can never drink again" seems unattainable. Rather, everyday I tell myself "today I choose not to drink". It gives me the power over my life again.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Breez.
Today is day 4. Feel really good so far. No weird feelings and am really looking forward to "upping" to 50mg next week. I loved the book - I just know this is going to work. But I'm going to do this all the way.....to the letter. I ordered the cds yesterday. I'm not a big believer in hypnotherapy, but I am a big believer in Roberta Jewels, so I am going to do what she says. I have full faith and trust in her.
Can't wait for my life to change...
