Gabapentin

Has anybody heard about Gabapentin (Nuerontin) being used for alcohol withdrawal and detox, and also possibly used as a quicker withdrawal method for benzo's than simply tapering? Supposedly, it is not metabolized by the liver, but rather excreted by the kidneys.

I've read a couple of small, promising studies promoting Gabapentin, but I was wandering if there was any in-depth material I could read on this.
