    Naltrexone

I have an appointment with a shrink on Wednesday, and they will be putting me on Naltrexone and antidepressants... what should I expect? I am so scared, but also very excited.... maybe I will make it after all.

You'll make it!!! Even most of the newer antidepressants have been shown to help reduce alcohol consumption some...

Down2, I've not tried Nal yet but heard good things. I'm taking Citalopram and it's really helped my depression issues. congrats!

I couldn't get Naltrexone here in Britain - not for the want of trying, but was given Heminevrin which has helped tremendously. I also have been given citalopram and have to say that, yes, I do think it's helping. Good luck xx

I read that one needs to be opiate-free before starting N.
that means something like five days' clear of alcohol.
How do you get there from here?
            Thanks, folks.

so much info beyond this thread

              Hi!

These topics have been covered a lot on this site.

Naltrexone, as Determinator says, seems to show a lot of promise for helping people to quit or moderate alcohol consumption. Search this site for info and google Dr. Deluca and Sinclair method. It's definitely not true that you have to quit altogether to do it.

Do some searching for more on this.

As for anti-depressants, well lots of controversy on this.

Again, as usual in agreement with Determinator, I really think that Citalopram can be soooo useful for depression. Personally, I would especially recommend them to anyone in a life crisis with severe depression, though i think the decision should not be made in a hangover state, but in a more "average" severely depressed condition.

I guess though, some anti-depressants are linked anecdotally with increased drinking and also some are harder to get off.

I myself can vouch for great progress with Celexa (citalopram) and Prozac (fluoxetine) and very minor side effects and withdrawal. But you should search this site for all these terms. Side effects of anti-depressants include weight gain, loss of sexual appetite etc.

There has been some bad press lately in the UK about anti-depressants being equivalent to placebo but my personal experience goes against those reports.

good luck and please mine this site for all it's worth!!!

              oooh one more warning...

people with bipolar can get manic on anti-depressants so monitor effects closely!

                Olivier Ameisen

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"
