      Antabuse

      Hi to all,
I use Antabuse sometimes and it has no side effects whatsoever - except if you use alcohol. I also tested it with a glass of wine but the redness of my face ( bright red) and difficult breathing was so embarassing that I will not try the test again. However, I am still struggling the demon and sometimes deliberately skip the AB when I know a party is coming up in a week or so. (It takes about a week before it is completely out of your system.)
I made a decision to go to AA regularly and somehow that is working for me better. I have not had AB for a long time and has reached 5 days af with no struggle at all. (Slipped last night though but not heavily and feel strong again today.)
Yes, I think trying AB is worth it but if you are very serious get someone to administer it every morning.
Then you KNOW you cannot have a drink and your personal struggle is over.
      Love
      Jessie.
PS. I also committed myself to serious Bible study and it sure gives strength and is very, very interesting. (Might become addicted to that instead) God is infinitely good.

        Antabuse

On the question that if it stays 5 days in your system why take it daily: I am sure it will still work even if you take it every 4 to 5 days. It builds up in your system. I have not tried but if u have been taking it for a full 14 days you will probably still get a severe reaction even 14 days after the last one. Has anybody done that experiment?

          Antabuse Thread

My doctor said it would take time to get to full force in my system. I am taking 250mg once a day. Period.

I agree with Lushy about being careful, I felt that way about Topa, too, though.

A week before I went to shrink to ask for Antabuse, I went in for a full physical and told my gp I was going to take Antabuse if at all possible. She had a full blood work up done, liver, thyroid, vitamins, etc (7 vials of blood, yikes!!) and said she would call with the results. I do have a vit D deficiency which is very much related to gastric bypass AND alcoholism. So added Vit D to my already massive vitamin intake as well as go into the sun a min of 10 minutes/day.

I went to shrink and discussed my heavy alcoholism and inability to stop myself and wanting Antabuse. He agreed ONLY after bloodwork, which I had faxed to him from doctor. I got the script but the pharmacy in my area did not carry it. Sooo, I got depressed and drank some wine, then some more and then said, "shit, I can't even go sober a couple of days waiting for it to come in." I checked into detox, had hubby bring the Antabuse and before I walked out took my first pill.

I went to dinner last night at Macaroni Grill, one of my fav places to drink wine. I had a fleeting thought and then thought "on yeah, getting sick and pucking" just doesn't seem worth it. Our dinner tab was half its normal cost!!

I smiled all the way home in MY brand new car we had just bought!!

Thanks for all the information. If I run into any issues with Antabuse, I will post them here.

So far, my only issue is I have been sober 5 days now. I like that issue!!!!

Love and best wishes to all,

Yeah I agree with Det. Great News Cindi I'm so glad this is working for you and the most important thing in all this is the fact that you have remained sober for 5 days.

              Here's to living sober!!

Det I have no idea WHY my doctor suggested I take such a high dosage in the beginning. I never even thought to ask TBH. I can only presume in hindsight that the body metabolism rate may have something to do with it. It's worth checking out though as you have me intrigued now. I'll post back later in this thread with some findings.

I've just had a look at River Pharmacy and it costs $95.35 for 60 tabs.... anyone know anywhere cheaper I could try?

My GP told me that disulfiram as a very expensive drug which is why it's very difficult sometimes to convince your GP to prescribe it for you. With this in mind tea I think you are still going to be looking at paying a rather high price for them wherever you shop online. Good luck anyway in your search and if I find anything cheaper I'll let you know.

Tea this is the cheapest one I've seen today and is probably a generic tablet. whether that bothers you or not I don't know.

                      90 x 250mg tablets will cost you ?21.90 + ?6.28 airmail.

                      Canadian Pharmacy

You even get 2 viagra thrown in FREE for MR.T lol!!!

I've just checked the site for the airmail costs, which you can only get by adding to cart and it brings it up then that they are generic. Thought as much!!! I don't personally have a problem with it.

                              Jaded,

Yes, I have a very loving and supportive hubby. He just wants to see me well. He agrees there are definitely more issues than just the drinking but that we can't get to them until I stop the drinking.

After my last stupid binge, I woke up, we had Destiny again, we went to Waffle House where my hands were shaking so badly I could barely drink my coffee. I had just gotten the Antabuse the night before and was truly afraid I would be unable to stop drinking long enough to pop the pill.

I looked him in the eye and said, "Hospital, detox, now." He stood up, paid the bill, and drove me right to the hospital. I stayed there three days, went through a very nice detox program and spoke with a psych every day. They gave me Gabapentin and Trazadone on

                                Quite honestly,
I'm getting a wee tad nervous about Antabuse. Mustard? I dip all kinds of things in mustard all the time and will probably not think before I eat it. And blonde? Does that really make you more sensitive to Antabuse or am I just having a blonde moment and missed something? :H

Also, I'm very curious about it building up in your system. I was thinking if I had a trip coming up that I could just plan five days ahead to stop taking it if I wanted to have wine while on vacation, but it might take 14 days to get out of your system?

I too liked More 2's plan of taking it on a Monday, and have a few glasses of wine on the weekend, then take it again on Monday. Like a very controlled moderation.

Bottom line, I was never afraid of alcohol because I felt I could control it. I never touched drugs or even marijuana as a teen because I am terrified of putting something in my body that will not flush out by tomorrow. I'm still committed, but I'm thinking now this is not something I will take everyday. And I agree with Lushy, why take something that is possibly harming your liver on a daily basis if the effects of one tablet last at "least" five days?

I'm so glad to hear that no one is having side effects in general just from the AB alone.
