      Antabuse Thread

In my experience with Antabuse, once I stopped taking it, I was giving myself the green light to drink whether I meant to or not. I mean, if I was truly committed to not drinking, then I would have continued with my Antabuse, right?

Whats even scarier is when you push your luck and drink without waiting the required time. I drank after 6 days, but I could have easily made the wrong choice and have gotton myself sick.

I think when you stop taking your Antabuse, its definately a warning sign and time to reevaulate why we are even taking it in the first place.

          Hi Kimberly!

I am happy to be posting more! I had a bit of a funk in October, but happy to start a new NOvember with everyone. Its nice to see you too!

I have 3 Antabuse pills left, so need to make an Dr. Appointment to get more.

Plan is to get as far as I can AF on my own, then pop my remaining pills to get me over the hump.

Im feeling pretty strong and optimistic right now. I had a boyfriend break up, so I need to remember that even a boyfriend breakup is no excuse EVER to go in a tailspin. Break ups are part of life, and can be done AF.

          Hugs from Overit

Sorry to hear of your break-up - never easy is it? But you are right, ANYTHING and EVERYTHING can be done sober - I have great admiration for people when they carry on the fight despite adversity.

I'm sending you a little extra bit of strength - even though I know you have enough for the moment, you can save it for a blue day when you just need a little bit more Never bad to have a reserve!

                  Antabuse Thread

                  Hi everyone,
I happened upon this thread and i am soooo glad I did. I have desperately been trying to stop drinking for years. with no success. I think the longest i have gone without a drink was 5 days a year ago. Its not good I'm 44 and have 2 kids. the older one (13) hates to see me drink and gets upset with me if I stop at the liqour store. I have to hide it from him now. My husband is also a daily drinker. we sit at night and drink and drink and drink. its not good. our finances are suffering our health and our family life. I constantly reasearch quitting, then I found Antabuse. i went to my GP and asked about it. she called a special pharmacy and they made it for me. I have 30 250mg pills. this was about a month ago. I have not taken 1 yet. I am terrified. after reading through tons of posts i see i am not alone and you all have given me the strength i need to take that first pill. I will not worry anymore about what if ? what if? what if? I have convinced my husband to take it with me & we are starting wednesday AM. Oh I am still nervous but I am convinced this will be a turning point in our marriage, family and life.

                    Hi caper, and welcome.

Glad you have found a solution! Let us know how it goes.

While antabuse will certainly stop you from drinking, there are other medications that actually stop you craving, attacking the problem at its source. Have a read around some of the threads and see what you come up with.

                    Good luck!

                      Antabuse Thread

Great job Caper!! I have had a great experience with AB (Antabuse) in the past... The only time I have been able to stay AF for a long period of time in the last couple years has been with the help of Antabuse... As a matter of fact, I have been contemplating starting to take it again, as I really need some sober time right now so I can deal with the REASONS I abuse alcohol in the first place... So I thought I would log on to MWO tonight (the first time in a long time) to see if I would get a "sign" to encourage me to take the first pill... Well, guess what?? The VERY FIRST post I read was about Antabuse...and the SECOND one I read was the one you posted on another thread about taking AB... There's my sign... Thank you! Good luck to us both...

I would definitely recommend Antabuse to anyone having trouble staying away from alcohol, as long as they also took other steps to help at the same time. Taking something else to reduce alcohol craving, and addressing underlying reasons for the drinking, would be examples of other steps. Some might also find AA attendance helpful. Good luck with it!

                            Antabuse Thread

                            Hi all,

I've been away from this site for a while and decided it was about time I checked back. I've been doing well on the Al front for a while but nearly had a slip this weekend which worried me. I have Antabuse which I got late last year but have never used, I really want to try this route but I currently work in a bar and as a result often get AL on my hands whilst serving. Will this skin contact cause a reaction? any advice would be great xx
                            AF since 19th August 2011

                              Antabuse Thread

                              Hello all

                              Hello all

I happened on this thread from doing a Google search for Antabuse and I know this might sound like a typical Alcoholic thing but this is really for a very dear friend of mine.

He has been trying to kick Alcoholism for a very long time and many of us killing ourselves at the moment trying to help and in other ways too such as getting into a 90 day program which he is supposed to go into next but I have to taken him to the hospital twice now for Alcohol withdraws in the past 4 weeks and now they just kicked him home after two days from this second time and before we have things ready for him to go to a program.

We are all very scared of what will happen next as we feel he will find a way to drink again but to get on point of the thread, he had gotten a prescription for Antabuse several months ago but has yet to take one pill and is always saying he needs to have like a week before he can take one and even is saying the doctor told him that (which none of us know for sure) but then keeps playing that I need to wean myself off or else I'll die from stopping drinking to fast game and never stops drinking unless he goes to the hospital.

So he is coming home now and has not had a drink in 48 hrs if not a little more and has several banana bags and lots of good food and other such things at the hospital so he feels better but he also promised he'd go on the Antabuse when he got out but I know what he's going to say is that it has still not been long enough and is going to sit around for the next few days saying he needs more time for it and will at some point drink before he will take any.

So I know this is not professional advice place and as well there are 46 pages here where this may have been discussed but can it be safe to say that 48hrs if not a little more is enough time that he can take the Antabuse or not?

                              Thanks for any help.

                                Hey, Kirkland.
As you know, I'm not a medical anything and I can't give a medical opinion.

I can tell you that if he hasn't had a drink for 48 hours, and in fact was probably detoxed in the hospital, he can take antabuse when he gets out.

                                Good luck.
