Antabuse Thread
Hey All,
I started on Antabuse and it is exactly what I needed. I don't have any thoughts about drinking anymore, because I know I can't. I know this drug isn't for everyone, but it is truly amazing for me. I've taken a full 250mg tab for 3 days, and now am on 1/2 a tab. I know it will still make me violently ill if I drink on it, I need to stretch out my meds because it takes me about a month to get them.

Hi,
I have been taking antabuse now for a little over 6 months with no side effects. It works for me because I know that no matter what happens I can't drink until it is out of my system which would take days.
Learning to live AF is still a struggle but I am saved from the shall I, shan't I, have a drink struggle. When things are bad sometimes I think I'll stop taking it so that I can drink, but by the following morning it never seems so bad, so I pop my pill again, which buys me another weeks or so.
I haven't had a problem with vinegar or any fermented food such as soy or fish sauce. I am very careful with puddings because they often have liquers in them. They say that it takes a full unit of alcohol to produce a reaction but I wouldn't risk it. I avoid cough medecines, eyewashes etc which contain alcohol because even in small amounts why risk it when there are AF options available.
So anyway at nearly 200 AF days antabuse is helping me turn my life around. What better recommendation can I give it.
Good luckLearn from yesterday, live for today and hope for tomorrow - Einstein

New here and scared to death... rec'd AB today - any encouraging words would be great
:new: Hi all! I'm new here. Have been reading your posts and they are sooooo informative and encouraging. I'm glad that the AB thread has been posted. My story ... have tried it all - the supps., naltrexone, wellbutrin-xl, campral, topamax, niacin and I just can't stick with it, nothing has worked. I am a 38 yr. old stay-at-home mom with a 2 yr. old and a 5 yr. old - that I love more than anything.... and that I want to be around for. I think it is just a matter of time before something happens to me - medically speaking, that will be irreversible (i.e. cancer, cirrhosis, etc.), and I'm scared to death. I ordered the Antabuse and am just waiting for the alcohol I drank last night to get out of my system. My mother was an alcoholic and I believe my grandmother was too (both deceased). My grandfather died of cirrhosis and I know it's just a matter of time before something happens (:upset. I am a binge drinker and the only time I could quit was when I got pregnant and I was nursing, best 18 AF months of my life. Now that my tubes are tied there is no hope except for the Antabuse. I'm scared to death. This is a huge in-the-closet story for me. I'm embarrassed that I can't kick it, and ashamed of the consequences it brings. I love my family more than anything and this is my only hope. I'm scared though... I haven't told my husband that I bought it... he knows about my binge drinking but believes I have stopped. I appreciate the thread and feel better that I have lifted this off my chest - I am going to start the AB tomorrow. Sorry for the long post -- Any encouraging words would be appreciated... dmb

dmb287,
I absolutely love antabuse for the results I've gotten. I have a long family history of alcoholism too. I would go and read all the posts about antabuse, because it's a serious drug and drinking on it can be fatal. Me, I'm scared to death so I'll never try it. Good luck and keep us posted.
Mack- Thats my worst nightmare. I heard that soy sauce could give a reaction. That's pretty scary. On my not to do list now is no chinese food. Thanks for posting what happened.

Thanks Montana Mommy! I appreciate it...
I KNOW I won't drink on it, I'm afraid to death as well. If I'm on it - I'm not even gonna entertain the thought seeing as how I've read some of the "experiments." I'm seriously afraid of the other issues... my face cream, sauces, hidden alcohols that may be in foods / products I am not aware of. That's all I need - eat a chocolate chip cookie with real vanilla (35% alcohol) and not knowing about it and some bad reaction happening. That's what scares me. I read a great deal of the posts they are very, very helpful. I guess I will still have to keep researching. Have a good one...di. :thanks:

Okay, I have not read this whole thread, but enough to scare me.....and make me hopeful I have been trying to decide if I want to start antabuse. I am currently on Topa 100mg and supps and doing pretty well. Modd/AF but part of me just wants to be done for a while. MM was nice enough to send me a few until I could get some and so now I have them but am just so damn scared to take them. I guess I will have to do a little more soul searching and a lot more reading.
I know it is a personal thing but any advice is appreciated

OMG, I know it will be easy not to drink, I would be too damn scared. I could take just a quarter of one and not drink for a week. I worry about the side effects. I'm a single mom and we are pretty much on our own, not much for support. I would just hate for anything to happen. I'm going to keep researching. For now...very modd/AF and doin fine:flower: I'm not as good as I'm gonna get, but I'm better than I used to be.

Okay, I'm thinking I'm ready. The Topa and supps help mod but I just want to take a break. And I'm tired of wrestling with the decision, so here goes.
How long AF before I can start, (hips says 3 days) and what dose should I start with? I don't think I will need much cause I'm so scared of it.:flower: I'm not as good as I'm gonna get, but I'm better than I used to be.
