What happens if you drink on Topa?

Hi, I just got my first prescription for Topamax and took my first pill today 25mg. I realize this med doesn't really take affect until you get higher on dosage so I don't expect to feel anything yet.

I plan to work up to 75mg morning and night if I need to go that high. My doc has prescribed me this much so I know I can work up to it over the next couple of months.

My question is this, when I go to drink my nightly wine is it going to affect me differently since I took the topamax?

To answer your question one glass or even a few of wine is no problem ........................

My advice is (not a doc) if you can try and stay al free until you get up to 75mg would be the best approach. Then see how things go. But really if you are planning on moderating I would suggest 30 days (as the MWO book states) Al free. Be carefull this is a very powerful medication. I am not on it any more as it served its purpose. I went up to 175mg and it really killed the desire to drink. I triated down slowly and stopped taking it . I prefer to look to the supps and cds for encouragement and help when al comes a knock'in. I have heard that if you do drink to excess while on it the Hanger over is very nasty so keep that in mind. This is my opinion only and you have to make up your own mind and plan. PM me if you want any further advice about MY experience with topa. Well, I don't want to quit drinking but I want to quit the effects drinking has on my life and the only way to do that is to quit or cut down dramatically, so the topa is my hope. And since nobody replied as to what would happen soon enough, I sipped on a glass of wine last night and actually had about one big glass versus my almost whole gallon jug. So, it worked even after one dose.

Have just started last week and looking at the chart in the book dosage keeps climbing up to 300mg per day - does/has anyone ever taken this amount or is 75 like you mentioned a more normal max

This may be the only post you get with this answer. You should NOT drink with Topamax. Everyone here does - BUT- if you read the medical insert with the Drug ~ it says NO ALCOHOL. I have a family member that is a neuro surgeon (Neurologist) and He said "NO ALCOHOL" while on this (I was on Topa 7 weeks). He said it gives your drinking a new high and can intensify your problem. I sometimes worry about how many people drink while on Topa here at MWO - but with that said .......... I didn't. I didn't even want to risk it. SO my advise is do the topa - don't drink - and if you want to moderate later - get off the topa.
