Lamictal anyone???? Like Topamax??

I have been seeing my psych for a few months, no success at abstinence but about a 50% reduction in consumption on naltrexone, and effexor. I must stop the Effexor due to long, vivid, and colorful dreaming nightly.

I told my psych (supposed addiction specialist) about Topamax and its use for treatment of alcoholism. He said he had never heard of that use, but recommended stopping my Effexor and using Lamictal for depression. And he says it is very similar to Topamax.

Does anyony have knowledge or experience with Lamictal?

I tried both. I am bipolar so I was prescribed Lamictal for this disorder. I have no side effects from Lamictal. Then I switched to Topimax because I thought it would help with alcohol and weight probs. It did for about a month - then it didn't really work in that respect any more. Also, the side effects of Topimax were severe, not to say horrible, but they tapered off after a couple of months. I took it for 8 months and now I am back with Lamictal.

I took Lamictal for about 2 months. I quit because it was causing me to be severely depressed. I just didn't feel good on it. I can't take topa due to glaucoma. There are several medical studies out there that support topa for the use of alcoholism. I have not tried naltrexone, but am thinking about it.
