    Topamax without a Dr's Prescription

    Hi,
I recently started taking 25mg. of Topa that I ordered from a Canadian pharmacy. I'm not taking it under a doctors care. I took it for a week and then did one dose at 50mg. After going to my gynecologist to talk about menopausal issues, she ordered blood work, thyroid test, and lipid test. Needless to say, I stopped taking the Topa. I had researched and found a website that said Topamax can lower your white blood cell count. Well, since I didn't tell my doctor that I ordered a drug from another country to help with my alcohol cravings, I felt that I needed to absolutely get the eight days of Topa out of my system because I didn't want to screw up these blood tests, thyroid tests, and lipid tests that were scheduled. Now I'm nervous that even if I wait two weeks, my tests may not be pure. Does anyone have any idea about what Topamax does in regards to these tests. I don't know why I couldn't just talk to here about my alcohol issue, but I couldn't. Perhaps it shame, or perhaps it's fear of what it could do to my future medical coverage.

I definitely noticed that while I was taking the Topa even after a few days I had less obsessive thoughts about drinking. I'm disappointed that I have to stop taking the Topa, but as soon as I have these tests done, I will start over with 25mg for a week.

If anyone else has taken the Topa without a doctor's care, can you share your experience with me. I would greatly appreciate. Thanks.

    Topamax without a Dr's Prescription

I have not taken topamax without prescription, in fact took it only briefly as it made me so sleepy I just couldn't function. But I would be very surprised if anything showed up in blood work after 8 days. You can probably find the info on how long it stays in your system on the drug info sheet or on the web. Things like lowering white blood cells are usually rare side effects, I think, and you were on a very low dose for only a week.

      Topamax without a Dr's Prescription

      Hi Julie,

I can't give any advice about Topa without a Dr's presciption but just wanted to give you some encoragement to maybe speak to your Doc about Topa, I know it's hard but it was the best decision I ever made and like you say you could already feel the benifets but you don't want it messing up other areas of your health.

I have been on Topa for a while now and don't regret it but I have been open and honest with my GP!

      Good luck!!

same here - my doctor was so THRILLED I had asked about Topa she was all for it. I sent her a nice Thank you letter telling her how well it was working for me. I'd send her flowers if I could afford it.

            Topamax without a Dr's Prescription

            Hi Julie

I've been on Topa for almost a year. For the first three or four months I bought it online and never told my doctor. I finally changed doctors and now have a prescription.

You were on a VERY low dose and only for eight days. If you have any abnormalities in thyroid or wbc counts, I would look for other reasons, not the topa, since there are so many common causes of abnormalities in those numbers. I wouldn't overlook the other possibilities. I seriously doubt the topa would be the cause, but you might want to be honest with your doctor if you have to. I find that most doctors are used to dealing with alcoholism. We think it's a big deal, but they deal with it all the time and are generally very non-judgemental and try to be helpful. If your doctor freaks out, then find a new doctor.

Hope that helps. Good luck with the topa. I think it is great. It has helped me tremendously.
Rest in Peace, Bear. We miss you.

              Hi-
I have read all the Topamax survey but missed all the action I am a fairly new to this site and a fairly new Topa user (3 weeks at 75 mg) and was wondering if there are any others new or fairly new to Topa who would like to post w/me?
              Thanks.

                Third Day on Topamax Again

Well, I'm back on the Topamax and happily so. I'm sure at this stage it is just psychological, but I really seem to have more self control almost immediately when I start taking this med. I started with all my vitamins too. I'm feeling a little run down these past few days, but I'm sure that's because I drank for several days in a row and am now ridding myself of all those toxins. Just wanted to log on and say thanks to Roberta for her My Way Out program. It really has given me such a sense of optimism. Any one who hasn't read the book, I can't recommend it enough. Good luck everyone.

I haven't started yet, since I couln't get my Dr. to give me an RX. Are you doing this without med. supervision?

                    Topamax without a Dr's Prescription

I started without doctor supervision. I ordered it online, but after a few weeks I worked up the courage to go to my doctor and be straight-forward and he prescribed Topamax for me. Actually, that was just yesterday! If he wouldn't have, I would have continued to take it without doctor supervision. I would have just followed the dosage schedule outlined in the My Way Out book. Have you considered trying another doctor? Otherwise,I know there are several people here who order it online. I was one of them, but I was nervous about not talking to my doctor because I was on other meds and honestly I was afraid to be upfront about the whole drinking thing, but thankfully he was willing to prescribe it even though he wasn't all that familiar with it being used for alcohol craving. Look forward to hearing how you are doing. Good luck.

Yes, I'm about 7 weeks in and going it alone, now at 150 mg. I'm in the medical field and it's pathetic to say it I guess but that's why I didn't even try to get a script for it-figured all the BS I'd have to listen to and thought I'd save myself the trouble, do the research and be done with it. It's been very effective for moderation. Side effects have been fatigue, very minor tingling and that's about it. I've followed the dosage guidelines exactly (maybe even a little slower than normal). Trying Topa never scared me as much as the continued path I saw in the future....

This might be a stupid question but when you ordered it, it came with instructions?

I followed the directions outlined in the My Way Out book. You can download the book or pick it up at the book store. The book is short and a very easy read. Well worth the money spent. Good luck.

I tried to get it from my doc and she said she doesn't prescribe off label and if I have a drinking problem I should go for treatment. So I ordered from River and it has also been effective for me. I felt the reduction in craving at 50 mg and am now at 75mg. On weekdays I dont take any till 4 or 5 pm to avoid daytime sleepiness at work but on weekends I take 25 mg 3 times a day to avoid afternoon drinking. I still have a couple of glasses of wine most days but that is a big improvement. I feel as if I am drinking like a normal person now, although I still haven't done the 30-day AF thing.

                              Topamax without a Dr's Prescription

I just ordered Topa from River. When I asked my DR about anti-craving drugs, he told me all that was out there was Antibuse! I didn't bother giving him the info on Topa as he knows nothing about it ... so I am going to go it alone. I also don't want to risk there be any records of it in my insurance or at a pharmacy.

Will not arrive until Sept 6-15 and my start date was suppose to be Sept 3rd! Bummer! Oh well, at least there will still be a start date.

The stories here withit are quite encouraging!
