    Experience with Naltrexone

    FYI

I was just on Drugs.com checking out drug interactions. It says you should not mix Naltrexone with alcohol. It said it could cause damage to the liver which could manifest as nausea. I dunno, I'm just letting you know what it said. I am considering starting this program myself, but didn't like reading that.

I went to the Sinclair Method website. They have a place in Sarasota, FL where they work with alcoholics using the method. The cost is $3500, which is very reasonable for rehab type costs.

I am very excited about this and hope those who are embarking on this method will continue to post.

      Thank you!

I haven't taken my Naltrexone for two days now.

I really wanted this method to work for me, and can see the reasoning behind it as being perfectly sound and workable- however I am worried because Dr Sinclair himself says a test on liver function is necessary before you start the program- the doctor I went to just gave it to me without even knowing what is was- he had to look it up in a book, and did not read the info- just found the name and prescribed it.

The last day I took it I was very nauseous- and my eyes were looking a bit yellow- like they do after a bad binge and I had only had a few beers per day and quite a few days before starting on the Naltrexone, I was AF.

I am so sorry for me and for the sake of this experiment- but I think it is better that I stop. However I hope others will try the Sinclair Method and continue to post here- I think it is a viable method. Even paracetamol makes me feel sick so I am not really surprised I can't take it.

          Mabella,

          I am so sorry. :l

Perhaps you should go to a liver function test anyway? I think it would be a good idea.

What are you going to do now? Back to the Antabuse?

I, too, hope the others that are trying this method continue to post.

          Love,

              Hi Cinders

I think my eyes are quite a good indicator of my liver- if I go AF for 4 or 5 days my eyes are a clear white- if I drink heavily they have a yellow tinge that continues for a few days after the last drink.

I probably should have a liver function test- but I know perfectly well what they are going to say.

I just don't want to add to the stress at the moment. Since stopping the Naltrexone two days ago I haven't had a drink, but if I fall again I will have to go back on the Antabuse but this time I will do it properly through a doctor.

                Thanks O2 and Starting :l

It obviously is not meant to be for me- but I really think it can help others, and although I can't take it I think I have learnt a lot from Dr Sinclair's explanation of how we 'learn' to drink, and that in itself gives me more knowledge on how to eventually beat AL.

                  Day 3

Ok. yesterday i took my 3rd pill exactly as directed, 1 hour before i left for home, thinking i'd have a drink as soon as i got in the door. instead, i got distracted cleaning the apt. and didn't start up unti 8 p. usually i probably would have had a glass while cleaning. even so, when i got home i saw that i only had 1/3 of a 1.5 L bottle of wine left, which normally would have incited panic and made me hound poor BF to go to the likker store.

i noticed that 1/2 glass in, i got very irritable. however, i was also watching the presidential debates (U.S.) and irritability has been known to arise when i am watching political blowholes gassing and prancing around on TV. even so, i felt like it was a more physical response--i felt like i didn't want to be petted by poor BF, who was just trying to snuggle on the couch. i also didn't want my dinner, oddly, but i made msyelf eat some nonetheless.

i was about to pitch something at the TV, so i went to take a bath and read, and finished a second glass. again, no panic when i saw i only had one glass left in the bottle. v. different. once i finished that, i even stayed up reading for about 45 minutes, when normally i would have gone straight to bed or headed for one of BF's hoity-toity artisanal beers.

and this morning, no nausea, no puking. i'm starting to think that it may not have been the pill, it may have been the not-eating-dinner thing that i kind of did sat. and mon. night. i let myself get really hungry both nights, then lost interest in what i was eating and didn't finish. hmmm.

                  total consumption: 1/3 1.5 L bottle merlot/cab blend. i'm very pleased. i feel good.
                  I'm put together beautifully
Big wet bottle in my fist, big wet rose in my teeth
                  I'm perfect piece of ass
                  Like every Californian
So tall I take over the street, with highbeams shining on my back
                  A wingspan unbelievable
                  I'm a festival, I'm a parade

And all the wine is all for me

                    MyRed-

I also noticed feeling irritated for the first few days on the Naltrexone. It didn't last long though, just a few minutes or so, then it would pass to come back a bit later.

I didn't worry about it too much- I just assumed it was the medication, and waited for it to pass- which it did.

                      More rich tasting booze please

                      Hi Marbella
I LOVE DRINKING...and yet I hate it because it has become so compulsive Which is why I'm here. I'll keep things short and sweet. I'll be starting on naltrexone in 1 month, after my second liver test is ok. I want to use this blog to chronicle my progress using the Sinclair Method and to spread the word about this method, assuming it works, to people who need it.
Right now I'm drinking 3-7 drinks a day, and 25-35 drinks a week. Either I'm an alcoholic, or am on my way to being one.
So look for my blog every month or so and hopefully I can give you great news about my progress
P.S. How do I add a picture to my blog?

Can't get naltrexone here in UK. Asked for it, but was told it's only licenced in UK for opiate abuse. It's madness. I did all my research re: the sinclair method, printed it off, and took it, full of hope, to my GP. To be met with "can't give you that, It's only licenced for opiate abuse, you don't have that as well do you??"

                        Hope it works for you.

                        Best wishes

Why not just get it from Riverpharmacy (health store here on this site)? It seems very unlikely that customs will catch it- and even if they did, it's not a "street drug" so you would not get into any real trouble. I have ordered mine and am anxiously awaiting it.

                            Step

There must be some misunderstanding with your doctor. Doctors can still prescribe you a drug for another condition than it is approved for. This is called off-label prescribing. Whether they want to do that is another story. Bring some literature with you to your appt or see an addictions specialist.

Might be different in UK, Nancy? I don't know...

I am almost positive it is the same in the UK, that off-label is done there.
