    Naltrexone/binge drinking

    Hi,
I was wondering does Naltrexone help with binge drinking?
or if you have a heavy night of drinking you could take one in the morning and stop the urge for more/hence stop the binge?
I have a presp. to be filled but was wondering if its worth it since I'm not a daily drinker.
I usually ( not always) go on HEAVY binges for 4-6 days ever other month or so ( depends on my PMS:-)
    Thanks!

Yes, Naltrexone will most certainly make Alcohol less desirable, especially the first few days you take it.

However, you should look at some of the other threads on this board for the proper use of Naltrexone and Drinking:

There are several of us on here who are using The Sinclair Method (Naltrexone+Drinking) to cure our alcohol addiction.

Thats how it has worked best or me. I don't want to ever drink again but life is very unpredictable so I am not gonna try to fool myself into believing that it can''t ever happen to me...cause it can.
I have been AF since MAY 08 except for 3 times that i drank. Usually If I drink I loss all control and can't stop for weeks or months. I bought Naltrexone out of curiosity to see how it would make me feel. I know that I can't drink like others do so I was hoping that it would be a better back up for me (instead of antabuse). I was so grateful to find that after just a few days the desire to drink went away. There is no magic pill ( at least I haven't found one) but Naltrexone is a wonder tool to have in your tool box.
It stopped me from going into a full blown relapse.

Hi EvieLou -- i know you've mentioned before you use naltrexone that way. I can see, for the reasons Q said, that it could help halt a binge. Naltrexone has a poor track record in studies for use as an anti-craving med. Same with Campral. Yet we have people on this site who swear by that drug as well. Neither is shown to be 100 % ineffective. That's the beauty of this site: information and options for each of us to find our own way out.

Yes, I too use Naltrexone as an alcohol deterrent. When I am taking the Nal alone I am able to not even consider drinking, then I forget to take the pill and I get an unsurpassable craving to drink.

I have said this before, but would like to continue to share my info: I am currently taking 5mg Baclofen 3x a day and 25mg Nal 2x a day. This formula has been extremely helpful in keeping me AF (alcohol free) for 40+- days. This has been the only "method" I have been able to successfully not drink, except for 30 days in rehab which upon release I began drinking again.

I appreciate reading of the Sinclair Method, but we must remember it is a "method" not a proven remedy.

I would like to try the Sinclair Method but I am not allowed to drink, if I do I will lose my home, my husband and all of my life I have worked so diligently to attain at this point in my life.

I am open to anything that will help me stay AF or assist me in my endeavor to release myself from the ties of AL.

          Ellbell:
So in answer to the question if Nal would help you in staving off your binges, it very may well be a possibility. It will not hurt you to try to experiment as we are all biochemically and psychologically different.

Good Luck on any path you take......:heart::heart:

I must say again, thank everyone for all their insight and sharing on this forum

If you cannot stay sober for any long period of time then my heart goes out to you but I can only tell you that to take Naltrexone for deterrence is futile. Give your husband a copy of the Sinclair's Book. If you want, I will send him my own! You sound like someone special and you do not have to suffer. There is a way out of this maddness. Yes thank you, we have the book, and he is reading it and I have also copied some info from the new site, (which is wonderful by the way). Thank you SpringerRider for the link.

It is just that he is so at the end of the line with the AL, he gets a mind set then it is set in stone. I do have an appointment with his therapist, who does understand addictions and I am going to bring the book and discuss it with him on Wednesday.

I do understand the premise of the method, I am however feeling good doing what I am doing and not drinking. I do however, as do we all, not wish to fight this beast for the rest of my life, I will not succeed as a "dry" drunk.

Once again, I am so thankful for us all, as we continue to unravel this web we have been caught up in, and I do feel so much hope.

                  Naltrexone/binge drinking

In answer to the question regarding Naltrexone and binge drinking, I am a binge drinker too but my binges last one evening and they occur 8 to 10 times a month. I have taken Natrexone one hour before any alcohol consuption since October 6th 2008 and my binges are very reduced. For example, there has only been one occasion this month when I drank what I would consider too much alcohol. So in answer to if it helps binge drinking, Yes. I am not sure if the binge lasts more than one evening though whether the Natrexone should be repeated the next day. Maybe someone else knows. I don't know if the answer to that is is the book either. But it hepls my bingy drinking that is for sure.

Thanks everyone for your answers and I'll let you know in the future if taking one in the morning helps stops the binge.

                      Ellbell,

Good luck on your path, I would say that taking a Naltrexone the following morning would definitely stop the binge, in fact I would doubt if the binge would even become full blown if you took a nal before taking the first drink of what would have began the binge.

I am now on day 7 of Nal, and the most I have been able to drink is 3 drinks a day, the last 2 days I have not been able to finish even half of the third drink. Not so long ago I was having binges that were lasting up to four days at a time. I do not know if this will last or if it is just the 'honeymoon' phase which some people experience when starting out, but either way it is a great feeling.

Please let us know how you get on!

I am very happy for you, Marbella. I myself a daily binge drinker - 10-11 bottles of beer. I don't know how effective Naltrexone would be for me. I can't handle ccravings at all, and give in to them promptly - EVERY DAY.

Thank you, Franco- There is only one way to find out if Naltrexone will work for you!

For decades I have been a 6 to 9 bottles of beer a day drinker (5.4% proof) so considering I am female (I am guessing you are male) I guess we are about even, and it is certainly doing something for me.

The best thing about this method is when you get a craving you are supposed to give in to it promptly!

                          Good Luck.

You are a model candidate for Naltrexone. You will get a honeymoon at first but then you will continue drinking as before. You desire will wane over time. Nal is gradual and natural. If you are able, give it a try.

                            Good luck and take care.

                              Hi, SpringerRider!

I believe that I am a model candidate as well. I told my wife yesterday that I'm going to ask our family doctor for a Naltrexone prescription. Today, I will make an appointment to see him.
