Now you have mentioned it I did feel really tired for a couple of weeks but didn't attribute it to the Campral. Feel much better now four weeks in if its any comfort

I didn't notice sleepiness myself because I was so used to being drunk when I went to sleep it was hard to GET to sleep when I was AF. Hang in there hon.

              Very sleepy!

I have been on Campral for about 3 1/2 months now and I continue to be sleepy. It seems to kick in about an hour after I take each dose. Late afternoon and evening I have periods where I can barely keep my eyes open and don't feel like moving around at all! I do seem to get "a second wind" in between, though.

Well, I haven't had a drink! I have had some cravings, but not as bad as I thought they would be. I did go through a treatment program, where I was prescribed the Campral and have also been going to AA on a regular basis so I don't know if it's the combo that's worked or the Campral! (I also have a lot of joint pain-just posted that question as well)

                    Sooooo....sleepy.....zzzzzz

Im on a combo of campral and baclofen- intially after detox I seemed to be drowsy not long after I took my mid-day doses, but not sure which one I could attribute that to. I did seem to pass, however. Now I only attribute my drowsiness to being fundamentally lazy...

I had a prescription for Ambien for insomnia from a previous doctor. My new doctor does not prescribe it. So I looked up the mechanism of action for Ambien on Wikipedia and it turns out that Ambien is a GABA-alpha receptor agonist - which means it helps an inhibitory neurotransmitter (GABA) to be more effective.

So I looked up other GABA-alpha receptor agonists online to see what I could buy legally via mail order (versus Ambien which is a controlled substance). It turns out that Acamprosate is one that also metabolizes fairly quickly (so I won't be sleepy the next morning when I want to be awake). It also improves the quality of sleep - which should help people to tolerate it better during the day.

I'd ask your doctors if you could take your usual daily doses and take 2x dose before bed to mitigate the daytime sleepiness. Perhaps the daytime doses could be taken with caffeine pills too?

I'm currently on Campral and I can assure you it has absolutely no value as a sleep aid. And the only thing taking a double dose would get you is probably a case of wicked diarrhea. You're barking up the wrong tree. If you're looking for a new sleep aid, ask for trazodone. It's effective, it's not a controlled substance and it's dirt cheap.
In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

Campral is definitely not a sedative.
