Chrysa,
Naltrexone is more of a moderation method than an AF method.
With Baclofen, if I can get to the correct dosage, without side effects (bad ones I can't handle), I can be AF and happy to be AF.
That is where I want to be. I do not want to mod because alcohol has wreaked sheer and utter havoc in my life, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Havoc.
I want to just not "want" it. Period.

My question goes out to:
Anyone who tried topamax and had terrible side effects with it and then later tried naltrexone?
Question: What were your naltrexone side effects like?
Thanks guys.
I tried Topa, but only lasted 2 days- I was getting blurred vision and the insert said to stop immediately if that happened.
I tried nal first time round about 8 months ago- I was taking 25mg a day and had bad nausea and a kind of spacey feeling- there was no one else on the board who had done or was doing Sinclair at that time, and I was doing it solo (no doc) I got a bit scared and gave up after about 10 days.
I went back on it in February after some more people had joined up here and were just embarking on the Sinclair method. This time I started on about 10mg a day- made sure I had zero side effects and every few days went up a few mg until I got to 25mg, then up to 50mg, then I chose to go back down to 25mg as I couldn't see any benefits on 50mg that I wasn't seeing on 25mg.....so here is my advice- start by taking about a third of a 50mg tab- if you get side effects stick to the same dose until you don't get any side effects, then up the dose by a few mg every few days until you get to 50 mg.
My other advice is to take it only on the days you drink- about an hour before you are going to have a drink as per the Sinclair method. Naltrexone hasn't been shown to work long term for abstinence but if you use it every time before you drink, gradually (and it is gradual) your drinking will improve to the point that you should be able to control it as a normal drinker does.
Can you get a copy of the book by Dr Eskapa- "The Cure for Alcoholism?" It is very helpful.
In answer in short to your question (!) side effects will probably include some nausea, a kind of spaciness, maybe a bad taste in your mouth and a bit of tiredness- however just about everyone reports that the side effects pass after a few days- just take a smaller dose and titrate up slowly.

I tried Topa a while back and had really weird side effects. I'd say words I didn't mean for no reason and things. People at work thought I was going crazy.
I have been doing the Sinclaire method with Naltrexone for a week now. I did four days at 25 mg and the rest at 50mg. I feel just a little spacey for just a little while and it goes away. In fact I think that is fading now. I just took my 50mg pill a half hour ago and I'm not sure if I feel anything or not. If I do it's barely noticable.

Thanks Revel for starting this thread, Amelia for posting the link that probably got Bill P. to the site with all his helpful info, EvieLou and Billyb for chiming in with what a miracle it has been for them and to everyone else for everything contributed to this thread. I'm getting off here now to go order some, then will be back to read about everyone's progress. My fingers are crossed for everyone.

Adding Baclofen to Naltrexone
After 13 weeks on TSM (The Sinclair Method), I have decided it is not leading me exactly where I want to go. I really want to be abstinent, not moderate. I really don't care if I ever drink again. It seems that a regimen of Baclofen coupled with Naltrexone yields the highest success rate, at least for my personal goal of complete abstinence.
I see others have had success with Baclofen only and that's great. However, I see no compelling reason to stop Naltrexone and TSM when I start taking Baclofen.
I'd like to thank those who are having success here with Baclofen for posting their stories. I would not have been convinced to try it, if it weren't for their altruistic posts.

baclofen
Hello,
New here.
I do not have health insurance and live in the USA.
Long story short. Rehab once, AA for years and it did not work. Hospitalized in major city I now live in after current husband who drinks and takes Xanax suggested that would help me, not!
I did not drink till 40's. Divorce caught me off guard.
I don't want to lose current marriage.
Have you all had success with Baclofen ? I so want to try it as a last effort.
Is 4x.com safe?
Thank you for any help you can offer.
I have a small business I can't lose! HA, I seem to be losing everything.
This medication sounds so promising, I will have to order on-line. Just need to know a safe way.
I've read everything I can find the last week on this, and was so relieved to find this forum.
I am drinking after two months of AF. Now getting scared.

Zenstyle,
Thank you for your response. I haven't found the other threads yet. Need to take some time to do that. Not familiar with this forum yet.
OK, worth a try.
I need to have something to deal with anxiety and loss of self confidence. I can quit for a month or two, then something in my marriage, like the current situation, just puts me back into drinking.
Or maybe just anything?
My husband, out of the blue, said he is not coming home till after midnight tonight. I just can't deal with all this. And he has been being so loving, since I started drinking again (?), not major in his eyes, yet. I quit for two months He cannot understand why I can control the amount. He likes me to drink so he does not feel guilty. I don't think he is alcoholic, just regular drinker, daily. But I just can't! Wish I could handle it.
I know this has to stop, this does give me hope.
I will order baclofen as I need to quit this drinking, I know it is going to kill me if I don't.
I'm playing the beer stage now, I'm 'usually' OK there, but then it's too hard too hide, so whiskey then replaces and the blackouts start. So frightening! Don't remember a thing! I drink from home, never go out, but it makes me a prisoner. And unfortunately, I have a cell phone and can wreck havoc with family. Wow, I'm not that way sober. But I've lost control.
I work from home now, husband a musician and gone most nights. I have not gone with him in years. So lonely. But this has not proved to be the answer.
I will order baclofen. I refuse to go down the whiskey road now.
I researched enough I feel now, that I could make a educated decision, but it comes down to life or death with alcohol. I feel safe after finding this forum. I do think, while doing the sober thing, I could maybe get myself back and get back to life. Sober at this stage in my life isn't working either. I feel now this is a last chance.
Thank you .

Zenstyle,
I was just reading through some of the other posts. I haven't seen anything about taking baclofen with high blood pressure meds. Is that information available anywhere?
I've not taken any other medications for this problem. Yes, to have the anxiety relieved would be wonderful.
I'm hopeful. Thank you for responding again. As you may know, you end up feeling so alone. Even when not drinking, I'm afraid to go anywhere my husband's band is at because I know they drink. I know I've made a fool of myself with the people around him, cannot take that chance again. Has limited my life so much.
For me to stay married to my husband, I have to be able to have alcohol around me and not go crazy inside because I want it and 'can't' have it! I just need to feel OK without it. I wonder if that will be possible? I know from the past, being around someone in a group who was not drinking made everyone feel uncomfortable, as this person will remember or judge us. Of course being the drunk at the table is even worse! Been that too many times in the past!
Thanks again

Bill P.
Thank you so much for responding. I take Diltiazem 60 mg twice a day and Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg once a day. My blood pressure is stable on this prescription. It would be so reassuring to know it is a safe combination.
Oh, the things I have read on here today have so given me hope at having a normal life.
AA members always told me I could not be around drinking and stay sober for long. In trying to come to terms with my life, I'd really questioned if I could for long. I don't want to lose my marriage.
Thank you so much!
I have ordered from 4RX.com and it would be so great to hear it is safe for me to take.
