Attempt at commercial gain from bac?

    Hi Beatle,
For me, memory and retention is greatly improved without alcohol. No great surprise given how much I drank back then. I am actually surprised how well I functioned and adapted to that level of alcohol use and still could maintain. That is drastically improved since I stopped drinking last spring.
I am funny and vibrant rather than just like f**k, another patient, the endless treadmill.

So that is great for me. Not so great and unusual is that physics puts me to sleep, not just I dont want to study sleep. Like I need to lay down and sleep and I take naps more.

I increased my caffeine use with baclofen loads. I never drink caffeine after alcohol use as it gave me panic attacks and made me sweat. With baclofen I think I used it excessively and then crash when it goes out of my system. I particularly crash when I drink cafeeine after the noon hour. Complete opposite reaction I intended.

When I limited caffeine, well I got the withdrawal headache of course per caffeine withdrawal usuality. But I did not get the swing down.
I am off for a sleep study as I do snore and apnea is a likely culprit. That's where I stop breathing while I sleep. No big deal except that some people awaken several hundred times a night due to that and fall asleep during the day and feel miserable.

I am pretty certain I have sleep apnea, I believe many alcoholics do and many alcoholics will feel loads better if they use cpap therapy if it is warranted.

Sleep apnea disturbs deep sleep, you never get fully rested. I am not aware of any study linking sleep apnea with baclofen. i would think conversely, you get better rest with baclofen as opposed to going to bed drunk.

I think having a sleep study done as I am going to right now, actually as soon as I finish this post. Is an important diagnistic tool in the treatment of alcoholism and also post alcoholism. Hey, if I didnt think it was important, I wouldnt be going to do it right now. And thats because, I think many people who are alcoholic have been sleep deprived for years and then when they can sleep, they have apnea where they stop breathing and interrupt their sleep.

So, food for thought. I got a hospital motel room to sleep at *searching for favorite pillow*

    ciao

      Beatle,

I feel the same with regard to memory and retention. My work has suffered from not remembering things. I've left tasks undone. I spend time each day reading these boards and those are the thoughts that are constantly running through my mind. It's just hard to focus lately. As with all the other Bac side effects which eventually subside, I hope this does too. I used to be sharp, but then again on the hangover days...not so much.

Everything I need is within me!

any chance of posting where you read those studies of the drug companies doing research on once daily pills. i figure that they are not dumb and would somehow find a way to repackage bac in some form get a patent and make millions. o.k. by me as long as this gets to the general public. it would be funny if one of us beat them to it. great to hear of your success. i just read oa's book. courageous. thanks - gratitude:goodjob:

Sure--here's one that few that I found online a little while back...

          From the drug company Alkermes:

          "Alcohol Dependence
Approximately 18 million people in the U.S. abuse alcohol; half of them are alcohol dependent. We are developing ALKS 29, an oral compound for the treatment of alcohol dependence, which could offer a new treatment option for people suffering from this disease.

Potential for an effective, oral therapy: Addiction is an underserved disease area where a variety of treatments are needed that can improve outcomes for patients. ALKS 29, a co-formulation of baclofen and ALKS 33, is designed to provide enhanced medical benefits over current oral medications for the treatment of alcohol dependence.

Pipeline progress: Alkermes is currently evaluating the components of ALKS 29 separately. In April 2009, Alkermes announced positive topline data from a clinical study of a proprietary, extended-release formulation of baclofen. In the open-label, crossover study involving 16 healthy volunteers, Alkermes’ extended-release baclofen formulation demonstrated a favorable pharmacokinetic profile compared to the currently marketed, immediate-release formulation and was generally well tolerated
          ."

Interestingly, this is the same company that has the patent on vivitrol (injectible naltrexone)...

Yeah I don't know, this sounds a little fishy to me. Their website says they reported positive results with the combo. But there aren't any published results.

They also just completed a study with ALKS33 (in the study it is referred to as RDS-0313) and they haven't published the results yet. I'm assuming ALKS33 is an oral formulation of extended release naltrexone.

              Study 1

Notice "Use of alcohol-, caffeine-, or xanthine-containing products" in the exclusion criteria. So they kicked the people out of the study that relapsed, I've seen this time and time again in studies on Naltrexone. So no chance for pharmacological extinction...retards.

              Then in: Study 2
They have woken up and removed "Use of alcohol-, caffeine-, or xanthine-containing products" from the exclusion criteria and added "Current diagnosis of alcohol dependence, with recent heavy drinking (eg, 5 drinks per day for men and 4 drinks per day for women)" to the inclusion criteria.

But as of September 21, 2009 This study is not yet open for participant recruitment.

I can't find anything on ALKS29 except on their website.

I hope the exploitation of all your successes on baclofen hasn't begun. But after seeing what's going on with naltrexone, it's left me cynical.

Naltrexone does not work well at all to treat alcohol addiction unless users forrow the Sinclair Method. That means continued drinking while taking it. Once it got the attention of the pharmas and rehab industry, the patent had expired and there was no huge profit in it. So someone came up with a very pricey long-acting injection, called Vivitrol. Vivitrol supposedly lasts a month but costs thousands of dollars. Treatment centers market it as a "state of the art" anti-craving med. Some have hijacked the success rate of TSM users to tout Vivitrol as 90% effective for craving. This is such a shame and it has caused great confusion about the effective use of naltrexone.

So I would be wary about attempts to cash in on the effectiveness of a cheap generic drug like baclofen. It seems counter-intuitive to have a time-release formula when the best result seems to be obtained from the individual fine-tuning and titrating the dose.

But those of us seeking solutions to alcohol addiction have been conditioned to expect that we must pay thousands of dollars for [not] effective treatment.

Thank goodness this site is here to be a clearinghouse for our real-life experiences.

not sure if i would call it exploitation. companies that fill a need a (a new or better drug) serve a purpose and should be compensated. whatever it takes to get the doc's on board to prescribe and help end the hell of alcoholism is o.k. by me. my fear is that someone is going to take it and fall asleep at the wheel. they don't have a prescription and one thing leads to another and bac is outlawed for offlabel use and this site is shut down etc,. paranoid? maybe. but it happens. then where are we. better to have the evil drug companies '' find" a cure and take the credit and end this disease once and for all. just my 2 cents

                      Hey, Gratitude

Glad to see you're posting more!

For me, I want as much publicity for Baclofen as we can get - as long as it is credible and professional. That site I posted the link to is the opposite, even if well-intentioned.

Whatever info about bac gets to the outside world must give a true reflection of the lifesaver it is, not just emotional "gushing" - which is why its such a pity Dr. A's efforts have gone largely unrecognised.

That said, I've noticed an interesting thing: when I initially started researching baclofen, Google did not offer any possible search strings. If you do it now, you'll see a number of options appearing in the drop-down box. That, in itself, is a sign of how knowledge of bac is getting out.
                      I'll do whatever it takes

This site is definitely at the pioneering forefront for the use of Baclofen by the general public for the treatment of alcohol addiction.
