    anyone taking modafinil or provigil?

    Hi all,

I'm still getting occasional nausea as a side effect of baclofen (hard to say how often--maybe once every 3 or 4 days). Sometimes it's worse than others but overall it's still pretty annoying. After doing some experimenting, I think that what's making me nauseous is the interaction between bac and coffee/caffeine. I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine and was totally off of it before starting bac. Then I started it up again in order to counteract the bac-induced somnolence. It worked but I think the coffee also makes me nauseous.

I want to try something else to wake me up. Awhile back I remember someone mentioning they take modafinil to stay awake (also known as provigil, alternec and modavigil).

I'd love to hear from anyone about their experience w/ this medication. Does it make you super hyper? How much do you take? Where do you order it from? Any weird side effects (especially nausea-related ones)?

    Thanks!! :thanks:

I am taking it to counteract the side effects of the topamax, right now I am I am only taking one tab which is 300 mg & I hardly notice anything at all except that it does lift the brain fog that the topa causes.

I ordered adrafinil, the precursor to modafinil(Provigil)...become provigil in the bloddstream after about 45 minutes from the lit that I read on it, online from

I have taken it, mostly while I was titrating up on baclofen.

It isn't nearly as bad as Ritalin or amphetamines in terms of the speediness, heart rate, anxiety, etc. But, it did give me a little bit of uncomfortableness sometimes - kind of like having too much coffee.

It was good for sleepiness, though, and I didn't feel any euphoria or sense of dependency, so I didn't feel in danger of developing any sort of habit.

I started with 50mg, developed a bit of tolerance, went to 100mg, and then 200mg. I took 400mg once, but it really made my heart race and caused some bad anxiety, so I pretty much stayed between 100 and 200mg after that. I'd definitely recommend starting off slowly, with the smaller 100mg pills broken in half.

You only need to take it once, in the morning, since it lasts for a very long time.

In the end I didn't like how it affected my work - I'm in the midst of a big writing project, and I would basically get really detail-focused, revising and rewriting certain passages over and over again, which was a big hindrance to my progress. I lost a sense of the big picture.

Once I titrated down to my maintenance dose of baclofen, I stopped taking it.

Sounds like modafinil's definitely worth a shot for your situation. Have you tried caffeine pills like no-doz, etc? That way you could get the caffeine without the acidity of coffee.

(On a side note, David Plotz wrote a piece on modafinil for slate.com. It doesn't give a whole lot of insight into the drug, but it's a fun read. Here's the link: Can we sleep less? - By David Plotz - Slate Magazine )

        Hi Billy,

Thanks so much for the information. (I loved the Slate article, too, btw). I read that in one clinical trial 13% experienced nausea compared to 2% on placebo (those numbers may not be 100% accurate but they're close). So I'm kind of concerned that I'll get nauseous from it but I still think it's worth a shot for me.

In response to your other question, I haven't tried taking no-doz or other caffeine pills but maybe I should. I don't know if it's the acidity in coffee or the caffeine itself. I certainly get nauseated from LOTS of things so I'm worried it's just caffeine in general. I've also taken Ritalin and Adderal when I was writing my dissertation, but they frequently made me jittery and nauseous so I stopped taking them (despite how much work I got done!).

Thanks also, Rejuve, for the link! I'll let you guys know how it goes...
