    Consolidated Baclofen Information Thread

    K-9

There are side effects but what is the alternative? AL has many side effects, DUIs, lost relationships, loss of health. The side effects from Bac do not appear to be permanent but they can be scary at times if you are not courageous and resolute. Perhaps one of the other drugs from MWO would be more appropriate.

    all the best,

On 3/11 Henrietta, in telling her wonderful experience with bac, stated ahe avoided antihistamines...
This is something I don't recall reading about in all of my reading on this forum. Does anyone have any info to share?
And, yes, IMHO, a seaparate bac forum would be fabulous, especially now with Dr A having posted and his friend Dr Levin available by phone...

I have reached 60 mg Bac per day. No side effects. Today makes one week. Hubby has noticed a big difference in my drinking. I have noticed a big difference in my craving. Have not been totally AF, but I am awake @ night. Two glasses of wine versus four or five. That is definitely an improvement. I am excited to see what happens as I titrate up. I am very hopeful I will not have the awful SE's that so many have reported. Perhaps my weight loss surgery has ameliorated the SE's due to malabsorption.

                              KTB,

I chew my baclofen up because I am worried about malabsorption due to my WLS.

I am at 80 mg/day starting yesterday. I am experiencing some dizziness and the "somnolence" described.

I slept well last night, though, and did not have to take a Trazodone.

I will work through the SEs.

                              Good luck!!

Well... We managed to get Baclofen from the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus over the counter without prescription. You can also get it over the counter in Mallorca where we have just been on holiday. So everything was going great after a major relapse on only 80mg per day.

When we got home to the UK we managed to get a private appointment with Dr. Jonathan Chick in Edinburgh and he prescribed at 100mg per day. As a result of that our GP will now prescribe at 100 mg per day which is the highest level anyone in Scotland will prescribe. AF for 5 weeks now.

As a result of the appointment with Dr. Chick our GP will now prescribe at 100mg per day. I think that is the best one can expect in Scotland at the moment. We found Dr. Chick via the Causeway rehabilitation clinic in Essex. We got in touch with them by using NHS Going Private which has a question box so we typed in a request for someone who prescribed locally and were passed on to The Causeway who use Naltrexone and Baclofen and they gave us Dr. Chick's contact details. I think there must be other doctors prescribing in the UK but so far only our GP here in Glasgow... and very reluctantly. None of the addiction services here seem to have heard of Baclofen at all.

Baclofen seems to be working very well even with major stress triggers which would have led to a binge.

I see this a small step. Hopefully someone else might benefit from just one extra doctor prescribing but there is a huge reluctance here amongst doctors to prescribe beyond 100 mg per day as this is the highest recommended dosage for muscle spasm.

Anyway, it has been a heck of a journey just to get this far!

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"
