    Consolidated Baclofen Information Thread

So I'm gonna need a domain to upload this to:

Suppression de la de?pendance a` l?alcool et de la consommation
d?alcool par le baclofe`ne a` haute dose : un essai en ouvert
Suppression of alcohol dependence using high-dose baclofen: An observational study
    O. Ameisen a,*, R. de Beaurepaire b

Even though it's in French I think it's important that any of us have access to the original, full PDF.

All of these files are stored on Urban Fool's domain that she so kindly let us use. Although I have backups and can find them all again if need be I think we might consider moving them to a more permanent location so MWO'ers will have access to them forever. I haven't heard from Urban Fool (Kelly) in quite some time.

    Anyone have any ideas?

          Summary

This article reports the results of an open test for three months of baclofen in alcohol-dependent subjects. Baclofen was prescribed in increasing doses, with an upper limit of 300mg/day until the patients experienced a reduction or elimination of their appetite for alcohol. The results show that after three months, 88% of patients had completely stopped or significantly reduced their alcohol intake, and most of them had become indifferent to alcohol without effort. The doses of baclofen required varied from one patient to another, ranging from 15mg/day to 300mg/day, with an average of 145mg/day. Approximately two thirds of patients required a dose greater than that authorized of 80mg/day.

          Abstract

The present paper reports the results of an open 3-month trial of baclofen for the treatment of alcohol dependence. Baclofen was prescribed at escalating dose with 300mg/day set as the upper limit, up to the point at which patients experienced elimination of their motivation to drink. The results show that, at 3months, 88% of the patients had either totally stopped drinking, or had significantly decreased alcohol intake and many of them had become indifferent to alcohol effortlessly. Effective doses were highly variable from patient to patient, ranging from 15mg/day to 300mg/day (average 145mg/day). Approximately two thirds of the patients needed a dose higher than the approved 80mg / day dose.

          Olivier Ameisen

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

                              Consolidated Baclofen Information Thread

                              Hello

I'm not sure if this is where I should be posting. I wanted to post it on the Baclofen Handbook thread, but it wouldn't let me,.

I have been using the wisdom of my way out for many months. I don't take any medications to help me, but feel that I now have to. I'm going to my PCP next week and want some advice.

I've no idea which option to ask for, or whether my PCP will know anything about it.

I've seen the thread about the Baclofen Handbook. Has anybody read the Baclofen Handbook? Should I get it?

If you were starting out now, what would you use?

                                Consolidated Baclofen Information Thread

Hi Saturn, "The End of My Addiction" by Olivier Ameisen, MD, is the "premiere" work, so to speak.

What I did was go into the doctor's office and just told everything about how much I drank for how long, everything I had tried, etc. I told her that I saw hope in baclofen. I also brought in a typed up sheet that included the title and author of the book, Dr. Levin's credentials and info., the names of other supporters of Ameisen (including Nobel Laureate in Medicine Jean Dausset) a proposed dosing schedule (starting low and titrating slowly). I told her that I was shooting for a max of 80 mg. I've surpassed that now and have another appointment with her in a week. I don't think it will be a problem to convince her to increase the dosage given that my desire for alcohol really has taken a digger.

I know nothing about the handbook but gather that the general feeling on this forum is one of distrust. I do not believe the author is an MD either. I suspect that most of the info. in the handbook was harvested from the various threads here. That said, I would not point a physician, whom I wanted to prescribe the bac, to this forum. There's just too much craziness going on here, and I'd be afraid a doc would be scared off from prescribing.

I'd advise to spell it all out and act like you know what you are doing because MD's are a little dense. I went in about a year ago and had to see another doc - I was concerned about constant tingling in my feet. I was (and am) pretty convinced that it was permanent nerve damage due to chronic alcoholism. I asked for a liver function test, and the guy thought that it wasn't necessary and prescribed some stuff that I took twice and threw away (it knocked me unconscious at night - not asleep, like completely out and I woke up feeling like crap). My regular doc (who is a nurse practitioner) had a liver function test run when she prescribed the baclofen, and the lab report came back saying "Your liver is working really hard." Well, duh.:H
