Antabuse/Drinking - not THAT sick
My boyfriend has been taking Antabuse for about two weeks (250 mg twice a day, which I give to him and make sure he swallows). After about a week of taking the Antabuse, he decided to drink a couple of beers....then when he didn't get sick, he drank an entire pint of whisley. He took his second dose of the day just after he finished the pint! Yes he did get a bit sick and vomited once (he was quite drunk), but his sickness was nothing like the sickness I expected. what gives?
Thanks for any help with this quandry.Tags: None

Antabuse/Drinking - not THAT sick
Hi lindasant,
Are you sure it's Antabuse? Did he get it from his doctor?
If you bought it on the internet, maybe it's not the real thing.sigpic

Antabuse/Drinking - not THAT sick
Hi Linda,
People can die combining antabuse with alcohol. Your friend must be careful. Mixing medication's and alcohol can kill, or save a life, so sounds like your friend needs to get professional medical support, as to the best way to use it. And there are many way's to tackle this, not just antabuse. See a doctor, and/or a detox facility.
Great to see you here, and best wishes.

I see your friend has seen a doc. Well, knowledge is power, and there's lot's to read here about different med's approaches, and people's experiences of them.
All the best Linda.

I would have to say people all react different to different meds. Metabolism, weight etc.
But OMG please express to him how very dangerous it is! Maybe have his doctor talk to him. AB is nothing to mess with that's for sure.

Thank you all for your kind responses. I definitely understand that it is dangerous to take Antabuse and drink alcohol. However, it seems my boyfriend seems to think he can be the exception. I still don't understand why he wasn't EXTREMELY ill. And since he wasn't EXTREMELY ill, I'm afraid he will try it again

Yes, people do react to medications very differently. But 250mg 2xday... that is a lot!
Perhaps you should think about some way he managed to not swallow the pills? I don't know... hid them under his tongue (like in the movies), or threw it up afterwards?Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Your maybe confusing it with Antabuse, that's the stuff you should definately NOT drink with. Baclofen won't stop the cravings for quite a few weeks until the meds kick in. Just taking 2 massive doses of baclofen won't even do anything in the short term apart from seriously damage himself if he drinks a pint of whisky again!

Antabuse/Drinking - not THAT sick
I was a week off Antabuse when I drank vodka and I didn't get sick but I felt appalling and my body overheated and I thought I was going to die. I'm not a small person and I have a cast iron stomach so I cannot understand how your boyfriend was ok - bizarre! Tell him to be careful, he would be playing with fire to repeat thatContentedly sober since 27/12/2011

Antabuse/Drinking - not THAT sick
I had a friend who took antabuse and then drank - she almost ended up in the hospital - her heart rate was erratic, her blood pressure was sky high - it scared her silly and she never did it again - I am amazed that he could drink that amount and not get sick - not just vomiting but his heart and other innards were fine!!!!! He needs to be really careful. He is dicing with death. By the way - my friend has since died from AL complications. How simple it is to see that we can only be happy now and there will never be a time when it is not now....

I have had the same experience on one 250mg pill a week. I can't imagine trying to drink on 500mg everyday for two weeks. Your boyfriend is playing russian roulette with his life. Just because your boyfriend doesn't mind the erratic heartbeat, and the feeling of your body being on fire, along with horrid welts doesn't mean you should try to drink on it. It isn't worth it.
I take two pills a week and its more than enough to keep me from dirnking.
