Any women hit the switch (with bac)?

I know I've pounded on about this subject... but I never seem to get a response...

All I want to know is if there are any women who, by taking baclofen, have reached that magical place where they really have no interest whatsoever in alcohol?

Lots of men on this forum have reported it in detail. Lo0p tells us he has wine bottles in his room, a fully-stocked liquor cabinet, and beer in his fridge -- and not only does he have NO desire to drink, but has to FORCE himself to drink to continue with TSM.

So, where are the women out there who have reached that kind of place?

    beatle,

Several women have reported that they experienced the 'switch' with baclofen on the following thread:

I thought Zenstyle was moderating and didn't Veritas have to give up because of the side effects? If so, I don't really think those two count. I mean a switch that lasts. I think Amelia might have, but my impression was that even though she became AF, she said she needed willpower, and the bac just helped her.

And Virgil, I'm wondering about that... How come they never respond to my threads? Could it be the definition of a switch? In this thread, I specifically mention the case of Lo0p, and that is what I define as a real switch. Otherwise you could say I myself have reached my switch because it easier to abstain than it was before and I no longer obsess about alcohol. But to me, that's not a switch.

          beatle,

Having not reached the 'switch', it is clearly not possible for me to define what this word means on a personal level. However, am I not right in saying that Dr Ameisen defined the 'switch' as the point at which he became indifferent to alcohol? To be fair, I don't believe he used the word 'switch'. Perhaps those MWO members who have reached that stage (whatever it may be) might like to chime in with their definition of this word. It is clearly of crucial importance that we're all singing from the same song-sheet.

          It had never
occurred to me that there was any confusion about the definition of the 'switch' word. Let's sort this out a.s.a.p.

Switch = indifference to alcohol. You look at it beside something like a cup of tea, and choose the tea, as if its the most natural thing in the world...

Virgil, I agree completely that we need to sort this out. But I do think Dr. A has used that term... not sure, though, because it's so long since I read the book. I wonder if he said it in that TV show? Or on his website? I'll do some research later.

And tip, your definition is what I think (thought). Which reconfirms that I have not reached the evasive "switch". If there is no alcohol to be had, I can deal with it, but if there is, the tea is not going to look very enticing (and I do like tea).

That actually happens to me around 2/3 into a drink. I want a cup of tea.

Agggh, my comp had a virus and I've been down for a few days.

Alas, in spite of overwhelming jealousy and admiration, I remain forever burdened by the Y chromosome. :upset: However, I did also take relatively large quantities of it for a long time. 200-300mgs/day for almost 2 months I think. I am holding steady at 150mgs/day right now. I've also got TSM working for me, and I am dead certain that's a big part of it.

I'll reiterate my experience of the 'switch'. Every once in a while lately when I think of drinking (to get drunk) the thought is like: 'uggh, remember last time...'

I did actually have a glass of wine last weekend though, and enjoyed it! This is a strange departure from the norm for me, as I previously thought that I could never drink a glass again in my life due to TSM.

                      Hello Everyone,
Beatle, yes I did get to a stage on Bac when I felt no desire whatsoever to drink - it was somewhere between 80mg and 120mg.
However, I didn't use any other tools apart from Bac.

I put a lot of pressure on myself in August last year. I had my first two solo art exhibitions in 22 years (practically back to back one in Sept one in October). Was filled with self doubt etc...even had to be in one the exhibitions with my work for two weeks meeting and greeting people.
As I was getting ready for the shows I started taking less Bac and eventually stopped. A week or so before the first show, I had a beer.

I am only just getting back on track now - am AF now and on 60mg Bac. I am working on a plan as well as taking my Baclofen.

Beatle, you will probably remember Wakeupmom from our meeting in London. She is now a year and a half sober. When I had my initial success with Baclofen, she warned me that I needed to address my 'shit' (my reasons for drinking etc and deal with those things that a pill couldn't fix).
She was right. She has found her sobriety at AA. She says it was hard too, but she has done it.

I am going to dose up again on Baclofen, but ensure that I spend time addressing with the way I deal with stress and the way I manage my life.
                      Amelia

Things just keep getting more and more interesting. And I'm still waiting to hear from a woman who hit the switch and is still sober.

Amelia, I agree that just getting AF is not going to solve all your problems. The problem is that most people, including addiction "specialists" seem to think that only by addressing your problems will you be able to be sober. I speak only for myself, but to me this is putting the cart before the horse.

I am in therapy now, as I was before I sobered up. (Even if I am not totally AF, I believe I can use the term "sobered up".) Before Baclofen, and before becoming fairly sober, my therapy sessions could oncycles of blame, self blame, blame, and mostly

But it seems that most people, including addiction "specialists", believe that only by addressing one's own problems can one be sober.

I speak only for myself, but to me this is putting the cart before the horse.

I am in therapy now, as I was before I started on Baclofen. Before Baclofen, I was sometimes AF, often not. Either way, my therapy sessions were basically "putting out fires". I wasn't getting anywhere. When I was AF, all we discussed was how to stay AF-- what were my triggers? How could I deal with them? I did learn a lot from this therapy, but I didn't get anywhere with my own personal issues. How could I? All my energy was going to getting AF or staying AF.

Only by removing alcohol as the focus of my life, whether drinking or not drinking, could I move on to the real issues, so to speak. I'm talking about physical need and physical dependence. I'm talking about anxiety and stress demanding immediate relief, not just mental relief -- and no amount of therapy can help you when you are in the throes of that anguish.

Now, therapy is a whole new world for me. And my therapist (who is not a prescribing doctor) is still in disbelief at the change since I started baclofen, and the incredible progress we have made in the past few months dealing with my "real" issues. I walk out of her office now elated. She's damn expensive (I do everything privately for my own paranoid reasons), but could very well turn out to be the best investment I can make.

So, the horse, for me, was the baclofen. The dealing with personal issues is the cart. And I'm in the cart right now.
