I'm confused. Just because one's opioid receptors are blocked, doesn't mean one doesn't get pain relief from opioid medications given for pain, does it? I thought it blocked the endorphin release but the medication still worked to relieve pain.

I haven't read the book entirely. Is this addressed in the book? I think it's an important question. Even if one has a med-alert card, what will that do? Help the medical staff know they can't help you? Doesn't make sense to me.

Naltrexone blocks ANY interaction on the opioid receptor. If you would take sufficient Nal and take a Heroin dose (or Morphin) it would not work at all - you would not feel pain relieve and you would not fell really anything.

On Wikipedia they say 150mg block 25mg heroin for about 72 hours.
If you just take 50mg you probably get SOME effect of pain killing medicine - but it can be dangerous. as first you do not feel it is working, and then when you are off Naltrexone you get hit by it like a sledgehammer.

I can't remember if it's addressed in the book, and you're right it's an incredibly important subject.

If you have a med-alert card or some other information on you that you take Naltrexone then they will be able to give you alternative, non-opioid-based pain meds. If you don't then they won't know and will give you the regular, opioid-based pain meds which won't work. If you're unconscious...well that is a nightmare scenario...

My girlfriend has that as she is allergical to a reanimation drug.

I already carry a medical card in my wallet, as well as additional information about Naltrexone along with all my other meds, but that's a great idea craving. I've been thinking about a necklace or medical bracelet, because it'd be so very important in case of emergency.

I took only a few days worth of Nal - approx 12.5mg per day and stopped due to nast side effects. Th eside effects last about 5 days. I have read that you cannot be treated for pain with opoids for at least 3 days after stopping Nal.

does anybody know how long until i feel better? i took one 50 mg naltrexone pill on thursday at 8am, it made me sick, i went home from work that day, now i am still sick its 6pm on sat. i am very dizzy and naseaus. i took it cause i want to stop drinking wine every single freaking night. i also only took that one pill, cause im too sick...blah

I don't think we can trust Wikipedia on such an important topic. Dr Eskapa I believe says that 50mg should block up to 100% of the opioid receptors for up to 24 hours, which seems to totally contradict that Wikipedia info. That would mean days[/b] before it would be totally out of your system, (and thus days before any opioid-based pain relief medication would work as it should if, gods forbid, one was in an emergency room setting, for example after an accident). Perhaps someone should email Dr Eskapa to clear this up?

Having been on naltrexone for a while now, and having relapsed a couple of times since, I have found that the manufacturer's guarantee of 24 hours of blocking per 50mg pill is an extreme understatement. In fact, I take half doses at 25mg and even just taking a single half-tablet dose, in my experience you are looking at at least 72 hours before you feel even a moderate amount of euphoria, and a full 96 hours before you feel anything close to what you normally would from the opiate in question. My suspicion is that the manufacturer says 50mg gets you 24 hours because they want people to buy more pills, to put it simply. However, I can say with confidence that if you need to stretch the meds (i.e. your insurance doesn't cover it, etc.) you can absolutely get the same blocking effects by taking a whole or half tablet every 48-72 hours instead of every day. After 96 hours, you will be able to feel some of the effects, but really it takes 5 days in my experience for the naltrexone to totally leave the body to where you receive full effects from the drug.

I've never heard such a claim, I do know there's a half-life which is something like 4 hours, this means the amount in the blood stream reduces by 50 % every 4 hours.
