Antabuse advice, and please excuse my ignorance

    Hi friends,

I have been on this forum for a very long time, and unfortunately, have kept failing. Sometimes not as bad, sometimes bad, but overall, failing.

I have recently found a doctor I really like, and he is working with me with my alcohol issues.

I asked him for Topamax, but he was very reluctant to prescribe it. He suggested Antabuse. He said something to me I had to think about. He said, "dont you really want Topamax so you can continue to drink?"

I had to really think about this and answer YES.

After some serious soul searching, I have decided to take Antabuse. I am mentally preparing myself for this, but my thinking is, If I know I CANNOT drink, I am positive, I WILL NOT drink.

I know it might be a bitch to get used to (or maybe not), but I need to be sober. It needs to just be done.

Would love any feedback, but overall my mind is decided on the Antabuse.

Oh also I will be taking Klonopin (for anxiety) and Celexa (for depression).

    Hi OverIt,

Antabuse worked very well for me - I took it to kickstart some solid AF time when I was slip-sliding about.

I'm sure other people will come along and say it didn't work for them, as always happens with any mention of Anbtabuse, but I would definitely recommend it.

I think it's one of those things that seems like a huge big deal until you actually do it (like buying your first house or something) and then you wonder what all the fuss was about.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the advice Marshy. I really believe you are right! I think taking Antabuse could be my God send.

For years, in my heart, I am sooo much happier when I am not drinking. My drinking is NOT even any fun anymore. Its not even worth trying to moderate. Moderation never works for me. Why even bother to have one or two?

I read somewhere that Antabuse calms the "Internal Wrestle". Not only do I need the "internal wrestle" calmed. I need the damn door SHUT and CLOSED.

My plan is to take the Antabuse on Monday. I might even make a silly little ritual out of it.

Ill definately be posting about the journey.

It did for me. It just takes away the possibility of drinking (I would never risk drinking on it, but I know people who have - DANGEROUS!).

I took it in the morning when my resolve was strong. It did make me a little bit tired for a couple of days I seem to remember, so be prepared for something like that, but otherwise I couldn't fault it.

OverIt, there are many threads on this forum about Antabuse, and lots of advice to be found, but I don't think you need so much advice... you have made your own, personal decision, not based on anyone forcing you to do so. It may very well be you can shut the door and keep it closed. You sound like you will do whatever it takes, and this could be it. Good luck with the antabuse and pls keep us updated.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

In my experience with Antabuse, it gives me absolute freedom, and deleted so many hours of the day contemplating , etc.

This is great progress Overit; not only with your self honesty but the fact you have such an understanding GP who is willing to push you for answers like this. I hope this the start of a good GP/patient relationship with your alcohol issues.

I don't feel I need to comment on the Antabuse or give you my experience because you sound as though you've made your mind up already.

I really wish you well with this.
