GQ article about Dr. Ameisen and baclofen

it just says that Martin started to drink again. I do not know why though. It does not say that Baclofen stopped working. There are really insufficient information about that. It is very hard to judge from a "i drank again" - without any further details.
since 23. Apr 2009 : TSM - failed to reduce units
since 08. Jan 2010 : Naltrexone + Baclofen combination therapy
reborn since 16. Jan 2010 : Alcohol Free (AF) - only taking Baclofen
    since 22. May 2010 : Baclofen against anxiety/fear
    since 14. Mar 2011 : off Baclofen - taking 25mg Topamax/day

Yes Bernard, Great reply. Jeff is obviously still searching. You've given him something to think about.

On the Wagon...."Recovery Group Disorder". I believe Jeff is suffering from that too. (Great terminology BTW) . He doesn't like it and is afraid to break away, but does not know where to run.

Great job Bernard. There's few people that could ferret out the information you've found and present it in such an articulate manner. Many thanks. There are many battles to fight yet before entrenched biases fall.

          thanks, azuldog

            Baclofen naltrexone

Hello, I am new to this site. I have been on Naltrexone for a while, but still drinking, but actually, not getting high. I want to lessen the cravings and have read alot about Baclofen.
Does anyone know of a Dr. in the Atlanta area, that prescribes this combination.

AA was no use to me. I am not very spiritual, so following steps was not by direction.
I've seen Baclofen on Canadian drug sites, has anyone used these sites for anything? I'm not convinced the meds are not placebos.

I first heard of Baclofen about a year ago. I thought it was great, that your article appeared in GQ, it immediately caught my attention and renewed my interest. I just finished the book by Ameisen.
Now, I would like to find someone to prescribe it.

                      Thanks Nate Penn

I appreciate your worm to shine light on this struggle. Hope you check out LoOp's post re Dr. Ameison's patent. Hopefully there's a big story around what we're doing and what he's doing and maybe we can start to move out of the Dark Ages of addiction treatment. Just thanks.

GQ article about Dr. Ameisen and baclofen

                        Hi All

Jeff to my knowledge not many people are getting baclofen through a doctor. Most like me, get hteres from online pharmacies, fortunately it is a relatively inexpensive drug.

I would like to see a follow up story from Nat using the example of people on this site who have had their lives changed by baclofen (me included) . It would be great for this site to opened up to the wider community as I know many of us have only found the site my chance and thank god we did as its saved our lives ! Not only that it would enable people to read all the information on all the meds that are out there (stuff the professionals wont tell us) and draw their own conclusions !

A question to Nat , are you considering another article ? I hope so !

                        BH x

I fear however, that as more articles are written we will begin witnessing the full force of the $25 billion addiction treatment industry crashing down on Dr. Ameisen. He will be discredited in every way. Too much money is at stake and far too many people who make their living exploiting others misery (AA, shrinks, rehabs) are onboard the gravy train.

Don't believe it. How long can someone run the same con-job in the face of contrary scientific evidence? Finally, many doctors are realizing that they have been duped into adopting century old standards of treatment for addiction. The crooks will have to find a new game and new suckers, I think. Sure, it might take few years, but the writing is on the wall.

                            Mr. Penn where are you?

It would be nice to hear from you again. Maybe you could address some of our concerns.
We could use some help from the media. Some of the folks here are successful. Some are struggling. Some are going down. How are you doing?

Unfortunately, I think On the Wagon's prediction is more realistic. Until somebody can make big bucks on Bac, it will be systematically ignored and quelled. However, the more baclofen becomes visible, the more the big drug companies will try to find a way to make money on it (time-released, for example, or in combination with other drugs)-- they already are trying. This means, eventually, it will become mainstream (after the drug companies do their multi-million dollar studies to "prove" it works and is safe).

But, as OTW also mentions, not only the pan-national drug conglomerates, but the entire rehab industry has a huge stake in keep Bac under wraps. You'd think this was strange, since Bac would make a perfect partner with rehab. Get someone detoxed with Bac, start them on therapy, while you slowly increase the Bac dose, and then send them back into the world, armed with what they have learned in rehab and a prescription for Bac. Problem with this scenario is that the relapse rate would plummet, and then profits made from rehab would also plummet. The rehab industry needs people to relapse in order to continue.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

I replied to the reply. I copied-and-pasted most of the original comment from something I wrote in response to a Newsweek article about pharmacological treatments back in 2007. In hindsight it's not as clear as it ought to be with respect specifically to baclofen and the travails of Dr. Ameisen.

I spaced totally on "online pharmacies" when I was considering my central point on access, i.e., "How exactly are the bazillions of drunks gonna get their hands on huge doses of an out-of-date muscle relaxer?" File me under "DUH" for that one.
