okay, you may be done with this thread, if not, i have questions. I like the idea of the appetite suppressant, but fear the depressant effect. Also, had thought of trying this plan without prescription drugs, just the vitamins, supplements and hypnotherapy. As a true American though, I want results, now! On that note, maybe I should do the prescript. Your thoughts?

I wish that I had the answers for you. I am taking the Topamax and never noticed any depression. However, I take an anti-depressant. It definitely helped me with not wanting to eat as much though. I feel fuller. It really seems to help the alcohol cravings. I am currently on 200 mg./day.
Many, many people on here only use the supplements and the CD's though. I think it is a personal choice and you just find out what works for you. I know that the L-Glutamine has been very important in getting me thru some rough patches. It gives me an immediate reaction when I use the powder so it really helps stop the cravings. I highly recommend it.
You can start out with the supplements and if you find that it's not working as well as you want, then you can talk to your Doctor about what medication would be right for you.

Hey there - I have been on Topa since mid December and take 150 mg twice a day. I had no appetite initially but that eventually goes away - eventually!! I have a little brain fog - or it might just be my age - who knows?? No depression - but take Celexa anyway. I did drink with it in the beginning - in fact I drank with it until week 4 I think it was. I did lose weight and it has stayed off - I didn't need to lose any though so am thinking about titrating down now to see if I can back track and maybe put some weight back on! I just don't want any cravings to start - I have no cravings at all and think Topa is wonderful!! The only side effect that I have occasionally is tingling fingers and feet - well, more like very sharp pins and needles, not tingling! I have been AF since beginning of Jan 'cos of Topa. Good luck all of you starting it - it is great!

I have taken topa several times. Everytime I do...I lose weight at first but then the weight lose tapers off. However I find it a great help in going AF. I am hoping this time is the charm as I have been AF for 7 months tomorrow. I have never felt any depression from the topa. I consider it a lifesaver as I do not know if I could ever get sober without it. And quite frankly nothing made me more depressed and unhappy than alcohol.

I was given topomax by asking my doctor for it in the US. He had never heard of using it for alcohol cravings. He told me to take it at night but that seems to defeat the purpose ! he gave me 50mg and i feel fine i took it early cause i want to drink. Is that typical? or should i switch to day

Hi luly - I take mine both am and pm - when you start you just take 25mg which is in the am, then you take 50 mg, 25 am, and 25 pm. Once you start titrating up, I spaced mine evenly morning and evening. My doc read about it and was happy to give it to me. I am presently on 300mg daily - 150mg in the am and same pm. I have no side effects - well maybe a bit forgetful but could also put that down to age - I made a quiche yesterday and was about to put it in the oven and kept thinking I had forgotten something - looked at the kitchen table - and there was the pastry - I had put all the ingredients in the 13 x 9 dish without the pastry first!!! Apart from that I think Topa is wonderful!! It has changed my life! good luck on it.

I ordered my topa a few days ago...I hope I don't lose weight on it when I start. I'm already on the thin side- the brain fog would be welcome, however. The hamster-wheel in my head is driving me crazy.

Thanks sunshine, I called my doctor and he said the same thing. I am just getting really tired. Its ok cause I have a week off so its ok. I have not lost my appetite at all, fennel maybe it happens on higher doses but I am also still having cravings. So I guess we will see. I was also prescribed camprel and naltraxadone. I am holding off on all those cause my doc does not know of any of these drugs and he is a psych. Not sure if its safe to combine. I think ill up the topa first

Luly - I had cravings still until about week three I think it was. Then all of a sudden I didn't - well, I sort of did, but didn't. It was an odd feeling - as if I thought I wanted a drink, but my body didn't really want it - my head did!! Anyway I have been AF since around the 8th-12th Jan - somewhere round there anyway - not sure exactly and I started the Topa mid Dec.

Fennel - I lost my appetite I think around the first few weeks and even though I really didn't want to lose weight, have ended up losing quite a lot - I was always on the slim side too, and right now am trying not to lose any more as I am positively skinny right now. I have my appetite back though but have got out of the habit of eating so much I think, so the loss of appetite side effect does seem to go away - or it has with me anyway. Either of you are welcome to PM me if you have any more questions. I wish you both well with it!

i got my first shot of vivitrol (naltraxone that lasts a month) two days ago, i have uped my dose of topomax and started campral today. I had one beer last night and took one sip. i dont even want a drink anylonger. i hope this lasts! i have been really weak, i think its cause i forgot to eat the last two days so i guess the topomax did end up taking my appetite away fennel! I feel better now, soup is all i feel like eating. i have alot of energy now after remembering to eat and enjoy working out again after years!

yea my doctor gave me a shot of vivitrol to block the pleasurable buzz of alcohol aqnd narcotics, i have legal issues so i really cant drink right now. The topa and campral help with the mental cravings. The topomax took two weeks then instantly worked for me! i take 100mg a day. It is my favorite and most effective i feel as i started it first.

I have been up to 300 mg for the past week -- been following the schedule in the book. I'm not sure if it's a side effect of the topa or not, but my energy level dropped way down for the last couple of weeks. I haven't lost my appetite either. Actually have gained weight. That may be due to the fact that I have been so tired that I haven't kept up with my regular exercise schedule. I'm going to stop the topa for a test 2 week period starting Sunday and see if I feel any better. I'm no spring chicken, but I usually have a lot of energy and I don't like this feeling of having none. Anyone else feel like this?
