Baclofen prescribing doctors in the UK

Can anyone share their success stories about getting Baclofen prescribed here in the UK?

Or, perhaps even by private message, are you able to recommend a particular doctor or specialist who's open to prescribing Baclofen?

If so, please post here! Let's help each other get expert advice about this ground-breaking medicine

    Prescribing Baclofen in the UK

I am having the same problem. I finally Googled NHS Going Private and found a website which will find private treatment. You type in the problem and they have a look round for someone who might deal with the issue.

Within a couple of days I had a call from The Causeway which is a private rehab clinic in Essex. They use Baclofen and Naltrexone and are reporting the same sort of success as reported here with Baclofen. They were quite happy to speak to a psychiatist near us who prescibes Baclofen. I would think if you contact The Causeway they would be happy to refer you to someone who prescribes. They are not charging me for the information. I am waiting for a call from the doctor up here and hopefully he can tell my doctor to prescribe at the correct level.

You can get Baclofen at a low dose if you just say you have a bad muscle spasm in your leg and you have heard it is good for that. It can also be prescribed for stroke. At low dose it suppresses craving so even that is something. The maximum they will give you is likely to be about 30 to 60 mg. I think they can go up to 100 mg/day for that. Also, I suppose if you want to take a holiday in Turkey or North Cyprus you can get it there without prescription.

    Olivier Ameisen

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

That's excellent news Otter, many thanks!

So, they refer clients to private psychiatrists who use Baclofen?

I also hope folk who get it prescribed on the NHS will post here, and if not the name of a doctor, at least the area where they got help, and if they could/would be prepared to share that information by private message.

Also, a great tip about possibly getting low-dose Bac if you say you have a muscle spasm.

Otter and Eight Days a Week,

I called the River Pharmacy, which advertises on the MWO website. You do not need a prescription for Baclofen, Topa, Antabuse, etc. This pharmacy is in Canada but they ship directly from the manufacturer, which is in India. I'm willing to try anything and I absolutely don't want to ask my doctor because I don't want it in my medical record.

Thanks Rusty - you've identified a very important point; how it might affect us to have alcohol problems on our medical records. I know I've read elsewhere that in America it can stop you getting life insurance, maybe even cause problems with a driving licence (?) but I have no idea if similar issues occur in the UK...

That said, lots of people including myself have already been for treatment through their doctors and been prescribed medicines for alcohol problems, so this thread is really trying to help folk who want to go through doctors to get their prescriptions.

Another issue might be the cost. As Baclofen's a medicine you'll need for life, and paying for it on prescription in the UK is so much cheaper than importing, I stand to save hundreds of pounds a year with a UK prescription.

If you are going to import it, Alldaychemist is cheaper than River and some here rate them very highly

I have to disagree with the theory that you don't want alcohol abuse on your medical record. It is a legitimate disease. By going to the doctor you are showing that you acknowledge it, and are seeking help. I live in the US and work for the government, it has in no way impacted my ability to get a job, get medical insurance, or anything with my drivers license. Why cover it up? Isn't that a form of denial?

If you have these drugs on your medical record, and are in a position where you must purchase your own insurance, you're screwed, plain and simple. Insurance companies will deny you coverage.

You won't always be denied...but you may pay higher rates.

I was denied coverage repeatedly for having been on anti-depressants- I can't imagine how difficult finding insurance would be if I had anti-craving drugs on my record.

Even if an insurance company chose to charge a person a higher rate (the already existing rates being obscene), not everybody can afford them. I know a woman who died of cancer last year because she couldn't afford insurance. There's simply no way in hell I would ever have that on my record.

It's different for folks who get insurance through an employer, but for those who must forage for insurance, it's a whole different ball game.

                    K9Lover,

This is in response to your question about whether I am in denial because I don't want Baclofen on my medical records? No, I am not and I'm rather offended by the question, frankly. If I WERE in denial, I would not log into MWO and read, seek advice and help others.

Fennel is right. I own my own company and carry my own insurance. Alcoholism treatment is not covered....I need to get a rider if I want it covered and the premiums would be ferociously expensive. I have never denied my problem with alcohol to my doctor.....she has been wonderfully helpful. She also is smart enough to believe, and know from experience, that medical records are not as confidential and private as you might think. I used to work for the government and gov't employees are protected from discrimination, etc. as opposed to being in private industry.

I also know from working as a newsreporter and consultant for the last decade, that it's scary how easily confidential medical information gets leaked out.

I wouldn't dream of telling someone in MWO that they are in denial, even if they were. hint, hint.

You've all highlighted a very important topic, and one that deserves its own thread I think. Then, not only can people who click on this thread find the information they're looking for, but this crucial issue for our friends in the States can be properly addressed, and will be seen by people it actually affects.

This topic can be used for a similar discussion on the same issue for those of us in the UK. Otherwise I ask that please this thread is about:

Your point was pretty clear to me K9, I think Rusty might have taken it wrong. Anyway, I've sent you both PMs, I ask please that from now on this thread gets back on topic.

                          Again :thanks:

                            thinking of trying all avenues

Thanks for this post, I'm seeking a private Dr around London who will prescribe Bac at a high dose then recommend my GP proscribes a maintenance dose.

I've called a few places and am waiting for them to get back to me. I'll let people know my progress.

Any advice on where else to try would be very welcome.
