The C (cure) word bothers me. I've been struggling with this for so long, it just seems unreal. It seems impossible. That's what I told Dr. Levin on the phone. For me, it's as if someone said, "Take this pill, honey, and you'll be a rock star!" That's how big a deal it is to me - how incredible it seems. I'm still hopeful, but I can't help but feel wary.

That's the gazillion-dollar question, right there, Ig. That, and the fact that we aren't rats (well, not literally). We're shiteloads more complicated, as are our relationships with alcohol.
I haven't seen Bac miracles here at MWO; it's helped some and not others, like each of the other approaches. I'd be cautious about anyone promising "a cure for sure" over the phone too, TT. That simply hasn't been proven. It might be at some point, but as yet, it hasn't.
Try any tool available if it helps, but proceed with caution and pay attention to how you're feeling and acting along the way, physically, emotionally, and socially.

Thanks, Pride. I'm going into this armed with a hefty grain of salt.
OTOH, I've gotta wonder if any long-term effects of baclofen (none have surfaced) can compare with two decades of alcohol abuse.
One of the things that is interesting about baclofen is that people do not develop a tolerance to it. It is also unusual in that it is safe for people with liver disease and people with disorders of the neurologic system, which could be a boon in substance abuse treatment since liver disease and neurologic disorders commonly accompany severe addiction.
I found a recent article on it this morning. Doesn't really say anything new, but at least it's evidence that interest in baclofen is growing in the treatment industry:

Please note that the above article talks about baclofen used in low-dosage - 60 mg per day, as opposed to the higher dosages recommended by Drs. Ameisen, Levin and their peers.* * *

Titration schedule
I wanted to share some of my experience with the good doctor.
I have spoken with him several times. Most of the conversations were informal and for information. The last time I asked him if he would be my doctor, officially. (sounds sorta pathetic, right? Will you pretty please be my doctor and let me pay you? But that's where we are trying to get treatment with bac. At least where I am.)
He said he'd send me a bill I could submit to insurance, and that we'd go from there. He also said that he wasn't trying to break the bank. No worries there, it's broken! When this works, he can have whatever he wants from me. And my loved ones.
He recommended this:
5mg x1/day for 4 days
5mg x2/day for 3 days
10mg x3/day for week 2
up the dosage every week by 20mg, evenly spaced
The good doc gave me all of his #s and his email. He checked drug interactions for me (no benadryl. bummer.) And told me to check back in week. I have since called him during the day a couple of times. He's always answered, always been kind. Doesn't seem to have an agenda, no book deal, no fishing for info, and at first didn't even ask personal questions. I luv him. I would recommend calling him if you're looking for a rx. But please, be nice. If he changes his number there are a lot more of us that will suffer.

Interesting about the Benadryl interaction. I've avoided taking it just because the bac makes me so dehydrated, that I couldn't imagine what the combination of that and Benadryl would do. I was afraid I'd wake up and find that my insides had turned to dust! :H Good to know. Glad I didn't try it!Better Living Through Chemistry
Switched at 180mgs of Baclofen on 1/31/11, and again on 10/8/11 at 200mgs.

Neva, cool. That is a very gentle titration cycle, which is a good thing, IMO.
The guy is really interesting because he's into both psychoanalytic theory and neurology. I don't know what the psychoanalytic stuff means in 2010 (probably a few steps removed from Freud, I would guess), but it sounds like an interesting combo. Your post got me wondering if I could get a referral to him (I'm not even sure that would be necessary), but I didn't think of just filing a claim and seeing what happens.
Congrats, and I'm so glad that you like him. He sure seems like a nice man.* * *

Bronzed would be good. Or stickied, if Tip's poll ever gets read by whomever makes those kinds of decisions. I've finally bookmarked it in my "important MWO" folder. I was spending way too much time looking for it over and over."Wherever you are is the entry point." --Kabir

I talked to Dr. Levin yesterday and he told me to call the pharmacy Walgreens as he said he works with them. He told me to tell them that I am his patient and exactly the dosage he directed me to take of the Baclofen. The pharmacist said that the DR has to call in the prescription or fax in the prescription and was really mean. I have insurance so I am hoping I could use my insurance. How did everyone obtain their medication?
I'm not calling Dr. Levin until Monday during his working hours. How could I go about obtaining the meds?

You'll have to wait till Monday Happyness. I hate that he does this. My Walgreens pharmacist would never accept that either. He was willing to call the doc himself and get the info he needed to get my Rx going, though. You will need to call him and tell him he has to call it in, or you can't get it. Period. Good luck, and let us know how it goes, K?This Princess Saved Herself
