NYTimes article you may find interesting

    Hi everyone--
I've been gone for awhile (guess so long that most of you don't remember me) but I just wanted to post this really interesting New York Times article about Bill W. an old-school "cure" for alcoholism that may have had something to do w/ the founding of AA.

Anna, thanks for linking this article. Whatever sequence of events led Bill W. and Dr. Bob to found AA, that has been a blessing to many, many alcoholics. (although not the solution for everyone, of course) I think even many long term AAers don't fully understand that Bill W was interested in ANY solution to the alcoholism problem. My understanding is that he was quite interested in research into the nutritional deficiency issues and all other research up until the time of his death. The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous speaks of the importance of a friendly relationship with the medical and scientific community.

May we all be as open minded.

Indeed, this experience ultimately led Mr. Wilson to abstain from alcohol for the remaining 36 years of his life and to co-create the novel program whereby one alcoholic helps another through a commitment to absolute honesty and a belief that a higher power can help one achieve sobriety.
I think all of us here at My Way Out benefit from the philosophy that one alcoholic helping another is quite powerful.

    Thanks again,

    DG

I find it truly amazing that AA was founded by two men who made such a valuable contribution to alcoholics around the world. Although it doesn't help everyone, it has done such a great service to so many and given hope to those beyond any hope whatsoever.

so much of what was written so many years ago, is still true for the alcoholic today. I am amazed at some of the long term sobriety in the rooms of the meetings I attend. Seventeen to 27 years among some of them and they still attend meetings to keep on track. It is an inspiration to me and I'm thankful to have found the hope and strength they share.

great article. i think i read that bill w. also tried lsd as a therapy. not sure if that is true but it has been reported that he was very open-minded about whatever might work. he was also a hopeless philanderer and very human. gratitude
