    Wanting to try Baclofen

beatle;856481 wrote: I'm planning to start a new thread on this one time soon, but I will say it here, as I have said it before:

Baclofen is an agonist -- which means (from my limited research and understanding) that it mimics the action of a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It seems to me that baclofen for alcoholics is like insulin for diabetics. There is something missing in an alcoholic's physiology, and baclofen provides that natural element, albeit in a chemically devised form.

I have hypothyroidism. My body needs thyroxine to make up for my thyroid's inability to produce this vital natural substance itself. I will take it every day of my life, because I have to, and it is taking the place of what my body naturally would be doing if I were not plagued by this disease.

It so happens that you can get the thyroxine completely naturally (from pigs' thyroids). Many people prefer this option, because they perceive it as more "natural" and believe it is more effective.

I imagine (although I don't know) that it would be possible to extract baclofen from cows or pigs or horses. I don't know if it is possible or if it is being done. Either way, I prefer the artificial version for ethical reasons.

I believe most vitamins used these days are similar, in that they are not "natural", but "chemical" -- made in a laboratory to mimic the real thing and make up for (supplement) missing elemnts in one's diet and lifestyle.

Please disagree with me and show me where I have take a wrong turn. Sometimes I need to be put in my place ;-)

You are right. Baclofen mimics endogenous GHB. Alcoholism is described by Ameisen as being a functional or quantitative shortage of GHB which is the chemical which allows us to de-stress. Alcoholism is a Gaba-b mediated dysphoria. Alcohol mimics GHB and Baclofen is synthetic GHB so they all do the same thing to our Gaba-b receptor, except alcohol does a lot more. I don't think you can get Baclofen from other animals; I don't know how it is produced. It has been around since the 1920's as a treatment for epilepsy. GHB is used in Italy as a treatment for alcohol withdrawal under the name Alcover.

In addiction, suppression of symptoms should suppress the disease altogether since addiction is, as he observed, a "symptom-driven disease". Of all "anticraving medications used in animals, only one - baclofen - has the unique property of suppressing the motivation to consume cocaine, heroin, alcohol, nicotine and d-amphetamine"

        Hi SB no more,

        :welcome:
This is from a private message that someone sent, they are uk based. It might be worth starting a thread on this subject, people have also said that in house are good but don't order over 100 tabs otherwise you get a bill from HM customs that must be paid before you get your hands on it

I have ordered it from River Pharmacy before and it was exactly like the Bac I was prescribed by Dr ......

            Hey Sb

            Hi SB nore more

This (below) looks the most detailed and well researched post on ordering on line, i have not done so. I don't speak from personal experience but was passing on what I've read. I'm hoping to get mine prescribed.

It might be good idea to have UK thread re ordering, as more of us Brits get on here.

As for SWIG, i have to disappoint you and admit it's my post code, i joined hung over and couldn't think of anything else

Best of luck mate, do keep us all posted

SWIG is referring to a vendor, In House Pharmacy. They supply baclofen under the Pacifen brandname. Not as strong as Lioresal, imho.

Bloody hell, Lioresal !, Pacifen !, I've got a lot to learn - it's like reading Scar Tissue. Thanks all.

SWIG / Kev - I think you're were I'm at but a little ahead on MWO (Observer enlightened eh?) - will make order next few days, and look out for your progress too. Cheers mate & good luck too. (I'm really quite scared - as I sit here with a Strongbow, I can't imagine life without beer, wine etc, but equally know too well where this is going / has been last 10 yrs or so. To think I could just feel "No, not fancy a drink" and not feel I was craving & missing is a fantasy dream - but at the same time I sigh, as I will miss - crazy eh!?). Nearly signed my name, but...not on public site.

Don't sweat it, Sweetie. It works - you just have to take about 10-20% more to get the same effect. Not a big deal- ONLY a big deal if you were taking Pacifen and then switch to Lioresal, as you will have major side effects. That's all!

Thanks, I thought probably not much difference or someone would have said so, but its good to have as much info as possible.

I bought Liorosal in Mallorca while on holiday. No prescription needed and any amount purchased. Comes in either 10mg or 25 mg for a few euros a box. Brought it back without problems in my hand luggage. Even showed it to staff at the airport and told them what it was for. No one was fussed, in fact, they were very interested. It is very cheap in Spain and flights on Ryanair are less than a train fare from London to Birmingham.
