    My MAGIC BULLET? Vivitrol

    I don't know how many of you have had this shot, but for me... it is MAGIC.

    I got the shot Wednesday and by Thursday the mere thought of drinking made me nauseous.

    I do not understand why it works so well for me.

    I also take 50mg of Baclofen.

    When I didn't get the shot for 3 months and I was on Baclofen and 300mg of Naltrexone I was drinking pretty regularly.

    ONE shot of Vivitrol and I simply cannot drink. It is the strangest most fabulous thing I have ever experienced.

    Any other Vivitrol experiences? Positive or negative?

      I'm so glad you got it again! Did you have to pay for it this time? I hope not!

      I never understood why this worked so amazingly well for you but I'm thrilled nonetheless.

      To everyone else: Vivitrol is a naltrexone depot shot that comes in two strengths. At best it delivers less than 20 mgs of naltrexone into the bloodstream daily. It lasts one month.

      You've got to have insurance, I think it costs like 600-900 dollars a pop!

        Thanks loOp I was just looking it up. I'm going to look into this as an option for myself but I doubt my insurance (the bastards) will cover it.

          The shot is over $900.00 if your insurance doesn't pay for it. However, the Vivitrol company is offering a voucher for people whose insurance won't pay for it bringing the cost down to $250.00. I was willing to pay that amount in a flat ass second!

          But lo and behold my insurance company finally paid for the shot! YAY!

          I have no idea why it works so well for me. I get the shot and the next day all cravings or thoughts of drinking go POOF. In fact the mere thought of drinking makes me nauseous.

          It DOES last a month BUT I start to feel it wearing off at around 3 weeks, so at that point I start taking the Naltrexone pills. I am on the highest dose (300mg).

          I also take 50mg of Baclofen daily, along with the Vivitrol shot.

          Once I have had the shot for about 3 months, I am fine just taking the Baclofen and Naltrexone. I think the MAGIC BULLET shot simply gets me out of the habit of daily drinking and then I am able to use the tools I have been taught.

          * Regulate sleep/diet/exercise.

          * Incorporate Structure/Organization/Discipline.

          * Set daily goals (small incremental changes - like doing 5 sit-ups a day for one week. The next week eating an apple at a specific time of day). This provides structure to your life. It also provides commitment to the small goals you have set so you can then set bigger goals in the future.

          That is what I am learning through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

          Research shows that the best outcomes for overall health and abstinence include anti-craving medications coupled with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have an article but I have to find it and will post it here so you all can take a look!

          Gee, I feel like an Encyclopedia!

              Logistically, it takes some work. Vivitrol isn't something kept in most pharmacies, so you first will need a prescription from a doctor, and then have it ordered in by your local pharmacy. Since in most jurisdictions, pharmacists can't give injections, you will then take the Vivitrol back to your doc for the injection.

              But, Vivitrol is just naltrexone, and most GP's don't prescribe it. Your shrink will do so, but he probably hasn't given an injection since medical school days.

              One reason why Vivitrol hasn't been flying off the shelves.

              Actually, there is no conceivable reason why Vivitrol would work any differently than daily NAL taken orally, anecdotal posts notwithstanding.

                There is a program called Touchpoints and I believe you have to have your doctor or psychiatrist get in contact with them.

                Although my insurance is paying for my shot, Touchpoints goes through them to get it approved.

                  Here is my big issue right now. You can only take this shot for one year. I have 4 months left and then what? I had to skip a month of getting the shot and was taking 300mg of Naltrexone a day. Now mind you, I could NOT get drunk, but I started drinking again every day (maybe skipping a day or two) on the Nal only.

                  One day at a time... one day at a time... one day at a time.

                  Vivitrol is the ONLY medication that works for me. Period.
