    Side effects of topiramate????

    Hi guys,
I have been researching through the older posts and home page resources re: topiramate (which I am assuming is Topamax)
It states that one of the side effects is an inability to recall words. Have other uses found this to be true?
This would be a real issue for me as I am a writer...and need to have cognitive function half way normal....(believe it or not, I've written some of my best work half cut (according to my editor) as alcohol seems to release inihibitions..ha!...)
What other side effects does it have, or is there something else that is more/equally effective without this side effect? :thanks:

    Side effects of topiramate????

Hi stillbreathin - Yes, that can be a SE of Topa - I do have that happen to me sometimes, but it can also be a SE of getting older - I don't know your age - but it could certainly be a SE for me! Other SE are tingling in the hands and feet - I get that sometimes but not as much as I did. Losing weight is another, but that has stopped for me - it affected my appetite initially and that lasted for about 4 - 5 months, appetite is totally back to normal now. I have been on it for about 6 months and am AF - have been since first week of Jan.

For me, Topa has been amazing, although I am getting the odd craving these days which I don't like - haven't given in but it is there. Anyway, Topa works for me - what dosage are you on and how long have you been on it? feel free to PM me if you need/want to with any questions.

All the best - wishing you well with it,

      Side effects of topiramate????

I never experienced that side effect - it's been a really great help to me in staying AF. I was AF for about 7 weeks, slipped up a few times - started over again Memorial day weekend & am good again since. I did experience some muscle weakness and general fatigue. I also found that was more pronounced when I initially got to 75 mg, so I went back to 50mg - stayed there for awhile and went back to 75 and stayed there. I'm good at this level. everyone is different.

I am on 50mg of topa. I was up to 75mg at one point, but my cravings are in check at fifty. I have NOT experienced any of the negative SE's of topa. The drug has been a life saver/changer for me. I would suggest giving it a try.

            Side effects of topiramate????

I too am interested in trying it. In fact I am going to the doctor tonight after work to get a script. I hope they give me one, as here it is not approved for alcoholism, but is prescribed for migraines and seizure activity.

My only concern is that a side efffect of depression is relatively common too. As I already suffer from depression and am on Prozac for it I hope it does not make it worse, because that in itself is debilitating.

Keep us informed on your progress!

              Side effects of topiramate????

Hi Indi - I take Celexa for depression but the Topa didn't seem to make any difference to it thank goodness - I know that some folk here have had trouble with it. i think it is just that it affects each of us differently. It isn't approved here for AL use either but I had showed my Doc the MWO book and taken the Titration schedule with me to my appt., so he went along with it and followed the schedule as in the book. He has been fine with it. Good luck with your appointment!!

I have been on celexa for depression for several years prior to starting topamax. I have not notice any decernible difference since adding the topa.

                  Side effects of topiramate????

Thanks guys, thats very reassuring. Unfortunately I dont have the MWO book, so its all about explaining to the doctor in the best way possible. I hope she goes with it as I talked her into prescribing Baclofen, and took it but had a terrible terrible time with it, which she then felt responsible for it because she had prescribed it off label in the hope of helping me!

Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose. I will let you know either way,

                  Thanks Daisy and Techie

I experienced that particular side effect on topiramate as well. But for me I quit it as it did not help my cravings. I still drank. Baclofen is working well for me in that respect.

Hey thanks for that guys, I haven't started it but am going to try to get to the doctor in the next few days and hopefully convince her that I need it. (Off label here too!)

I think I also may have depression, so will let her know that I may need something for that too...........

Have a great day everyone, thanks so much for answering.:h

I think there are some studies that show the topirimate works. Just not enough for the company to claim it in the advertising and promotion. Lots of drugs are used off label. It is OK to use off label if it is the right choice for the patient.
                        Good luck

                          Side effects of topiramate????

I guess I never understand all this concern over a prescription causing depression since alcohol itself is a depressant and everyone here uses a lot of alcohol, as well as other substances. I stopped drinking completely when I started using the drug. I had no desire to drink at all! . . . It was amazing for me.

Even when I slipped up it was very minimal - I had no taste for alcohol - it didn't taste good to me at all. I'm sure without it I'd have binged & been right back to daily drinking. For me it's been a miracle. I've been a heavy drinker and an occasional drug user for a long time. I"ve had my own troubles with depression on & off over the years, but I think most people who "self medicate" with drugs or alcohol have other underlying issues anyway. I'd rather take my chances at least TRYING a prescription drug to stop drinking rather than staying on the destructive path I was on. Understanding every person may have to try different things & different solutions may work for different people - I just wouldn't be overly concerned about depression when you're ok with drinking yourself to death with a known depressant like alcohol. Isn't it better to try something that may help you quit that?. . . .just my two cents.

I also think that maybe before you ask for an anti-depressant to go with the topa (provided you're not already taking one) - you may want to start on the topa, quit drinking & see if removing the alcohol might be enough to lift your mood before starting on drug combinations. It may take your body a little while to adjust to the one drug. I'd get used to it first before combining medications. Give things time to work. I know that I'd been drinking a long time. My body had to adjust in a number of ways - my sugar levels were out of whack for one thing . . . .so, paying attention to your diet is important when you first stop. A lot of this is covered in the MWO book. I'd strongly suggest reading that to those of you who may not have done that yet . . . .a lot of good information is in there regarding diet, etc. that can assist in your ability to handle the changes effectively no matter what pharmaceuticals or supplements you choose to use.
