    Topa vs Bac any preference?

    Hi there,

Just wondering how people come to choose what drug they will try, and if they have tryed both, which one they have found to be superior. I appreciate we are all different, but I am just interested.

I have tryed both. I am currently trying Topa, early days yet and minimal success with it. It just makes me question how we come to choose what we take. Is a process of elimination?

remember you're only on 25mg of topa you need to build up to find what dosage works for you. It's the same for any of the other anti-craving meds!

      Hi Indy,

I think it just might be a process of elimination. I tried Campral. No effect at all. Did nothing for my cravings and had uncomfortable and embarrassing side effects :-( Many people here feel topa makes them feel dopey. Baclofen makes them feel sleepy. Naltrexone makes people nauseated. I have not had nausea with NAL. Baclofen I use for sleeping because when I quit drinking I had insomnia which drove me nuts. I tried Antabuse and I had a horrible reaction to it when I used an astringent on my face.

I am now AF because of NAL, primarily, along with Baclofen. But the meds alone will not work. I had to change my attitude, my routine, my habits. I used the Toolbox in the Abstinence section to help the NAL work to rewire my brain to change the way I viewed drinking. That's half the battle.

I'd go with the one that actually works.

              Hi guys,

Thanks for your replys. Rusty, I totally agree, rewiring is important, we can take away the craving but its that habit that seems to be hard wired somehow along the line!

Loop, I think you kind of missed my point, but Im glad you have found your way, it has been a well documented journey and I am truly pleased you have found what works for you.

Phoenix, you obviously stopped it?? Do you take any other meds now?

Yes, I've been on Baclofen since November. I got up to 190, couldn't handle the SE's and got all the way back down to 30, got encouraged by the wonderful folks here and am now up to 210. I am drinking less, able to go 2-3 days without but then I always cave. But at least now it's 2 steps forward 1 step back, instead of 1 step in the grave. I feel I am close to the switch. On the days I don't drink, I don't have cravings.

Agreed, but I guess you mean the ONES that actually work.

Hmmm I had the same question as I am trying to work up the nerve to talk to my Doc about meds.
I don't have a great stomache so not sure about some of them.

                          Antabuse scares me.

Topomax - I am thinking about. But the whole idiot thing has got me second guessing. I don't need any extra help to make me a space monkey as it is. And I don't want to be drowsy.
                          Hmmmmm. So confusing.

Hi meech welcome back. I have been on topa since november '09. I am relatively crave free at 50mg 1/day. I have been up to 75mg at the highest. With the supps and the topa I feel great. I do not suffer from any of the SE's most complain about. I did have some appetite suppression initially, but normalized after a few weeks. I recommend giving it a try.

                              Techie,

                              Hi Techie!
thank you thank you thank you.

I was really getting more confused about it all. I think I will ask for the Topo. I MUST GET THE NERVE UP TO ASK THE DOC on Tuesday. boy I must have lived a very sheltered or non-confrontational life or whatever as talking to my Doctor about this is one of the scarest, embarassing things I have had to do in my life. God I need to do it though. Maybe one of the most HONEST things I have had to do in my life.
I'm glad you posted your experiences with Topo.
